My husband's gr grandparents, James and Matilda Fleming Loughry were married in Fintona, Tyrone in 1845 and are next found in the 1851 census in Mearns, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Would there be any travel records from this period? His parents were James, a hatter by profession, and Ann Glass Loughry. I have never been able to find any information on them or Matilda's relatives. Any suggestions? Sandy Laurie Jamestown, PA
Hello Sandy, There wouldn't be any travel documents for this time as Ireland and Scotland were both members of the United kingdom and internal travel was not recorded. At one point Ireland and Scotland are only about 12 miles apart and can see each other on a clear day so travel between the two countries was, and is, common. For Scottish documents try www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk It is a pay site but there is a free surname search which might help, Rob Doragh Liverpool UK Date: Mon, 9 Dec 2013 07:17:06 From: [email protected] Subject: [CoTyIre] emigrants to Scotland My husband's gr grandparents, James and Matilda Fleming Loughry married in Fintona, Tyrone in 1845 and are next found in the 1851 census in Mearns, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Hi Sandy There was no need for passenger lists or similar to be kept as it was to all intents and purposes just an internal trip There may have been some sort of paperwork at the time for the captain/owners but I am not aware of any that survive if indeed it ever existed Have you checked the events in scotland which may record their parents Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 09/12/2013 15:17, Sandy Laurie wrote: > My husband's gr grandparents, James and Matilda Fleming Loughry were > married in Fintona, Tyrone in 1845 and are next found in the 1851 > census in Mearns, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Sandy, have you tried looking for James, the hatter, in any of the Irish provincial directories of the time? Perhaps newspaper advertisements as well? -Clare L.
