Laurie, Depending on what year your ancestors arrived in the US will determine whether or not they passed through Ellis Island. Ellis Island didn't open until 1892. If arriving in NYC prior to this, there was Castle Garden (NYC), but they could also have entered through Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore...
