    3. One of my concerns with software is that if I need a new pc the software may be outdated and I can't transfer my trees. What do people do? 3. I use GRAMPS ( https://gramps-project.org/wiki/index.php?title=Gramps_3.4_Wiki_Manual) as my master database, keeping facts, images, relationship and anything else on my local computer (backed up of course.) But I use Ancestry to share my tree(s) and search for data and relationships. Granted GRAMPS is quite complex because it is so flexible, but most of the complexity can be ignored. Since it is open source, it will always exist, and there's a high probability it will continue to work as operating systems evolve. It current runs on Mac, Linux and Windows. 3. I have long used a little external hard drive to store my family tree, and I back it up to another. That way, I can always take one with me when traveling or visiting other family. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jackie Brown via" <cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com> To: "Ulster Ancestry" <ulsterancestry@hotmail.com> Cc: fermanagh-gold@rootsweb.com, cotyroneireland-l@rootsweb.com Sent: Wednesday, May 27, 2015 10:30:29 AM Subject: Re: [CoTyIre] FERMANAGH-GOLD Alarming News about Ancestry.com One of my concerns with software is that if I need a new pc the software may be outdated and I can't transfer my trees. 3. As long as you keep somewhere up to date with the software you use (I assume you use software other than keep a tree on Ancestry?) I use PAF, not updated for a long time but still working quite happily and does all I need of it If you keep regular back ups of your tree from your software or a gedcom if need be, kept in two or three separate places you should be covered If using Ancestry alone, the easiest way would be to use FTM 2012/2014 and download (Synch) your tree, you would then have a copy on your computer and would not need to rely on Ancestry You could then keep FTM back ups separately Old versions of FTM trees can almost always be updated to the latest version As to Ancestry being up for sale, nothing new, they were sold three years ago to the people who own it now, I did not see the world stop turning then and I do not expect it to if they sell it again Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 27/05/2015 18:30, Jackie Brown via wrote: > One of my concerns with software is that if I need a new pc the software may be outdated and I can't transfer my trees.
