    3. Hi Jackie: I was one of the members on the LDS steering committee looking at updating the GEDCOM Standard few years back. Make sure you have a genealogy propram (99% of them are) that are able to export or save to at least that standard. A Gedcom able app is able to read a ged file which is a tag delimited text file. Ged's are straight text files that different programs can read regardless of age going back until the formation of the standard. Not all programs are fully gedcom compliant however so backups are important and keeping on to old programs also helpful. In my case I had many trees done in LDS's Personal Ancestry File (PAF) and when I went to Mac I switched to Open Source projected called Gramps. Gramps is very helpful in that it has versions available in virtually every platform that work very much alike Windows, Mac, Linux. It's available for free here is user supported and free to use with no spyware or adware. https://gramps-project.org/ It has in import from Gedcom feature it didn't fully understand all the tags however of Gedcom that I had in PAF so to work around that I run Wineskin which allows me to run Windows programs including PAF on my OS X Mac Snow Leopard. Wineskin was so used to seeing it's product used for PAF that my version came with a skin already setup for running Windows PAF. Hope this was helpful. Len Fluhrer
