Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the following family for which I was given information about last month. The family consists of Thomas Smith COWAN (1795-1841), his wife, Charlotte McFARLAND (1804-1874) and their children - John (1829-1915), William Frederick (1830-1918), Charlotte (1832-1854), Robert (1834-1851) and Richard James (1837-1920). Thomas is reported as being a merchant in Fintona who immigrated in 1839 to what is now Canada where he was joined by his family in 1841. He died of typhoid fever later in 1841. The sons, John and William Frederick, ended up in the Ontarian city of Oshawa where they became prominent citizens. For your information, I have already found the following - a “Find A Grave Memorial” page for Thomas, a Wikipedia article about a business started by John and William, and a book which I found online called “Historic Sketches of Oshawa” which contains biographical detail for both John and William. I particularly interested in finding out more about the family's time in Ireland. Any assistance would be appreciated. Regards David Cowan Adelaide, South Australia
Hi David I THINK I have a connection. Many of my family went to Canada at that time from Tyrone in particular but not only from there, also from Antrim, Sligo etc. but from your perspective at that time, from Ireland! Just need to check it out with my Canadian cousin first - don't want to lead you up the garden path! My probable link is through the Hamilton family (my paternal grandmother's family). It seems to me the Cowans and Hamiltons inter-married and hence our connect! By the way. I was born in N.Ireland but I'm now in Australia too (WA).
