    1. [CoTyIre] visit to PRONI
    2. mmarion via
    3. Now that I have been to Ireland and have some Armstrongs I can look for, I am going to make a quick cheap trip to Belfast and go to PRONI. I am asking the list members for any advice, it will be my first trip to PRONI. Where to stay that is close. I see a Premier Inn right there, anything cheaper? This is my second trip to Ireland this year, so I have to make this one inexpensive as possible. I have two reasons for going to look at the sixmilecross microfilm at PRONI. From what I can see on the internet, the earlier records were destroyed in the fire. So I have also contacted the pastor at the sixmilecross church to see the records he has. My one regret about my visit in June, was that once I found my Armstrong cousins, I did not have time to stay for a day or two to meet the oldest one, Billy. So that is also the reason I am going back, I do not want to wait a year and maybe not get to see him. He lives near Brackey or Omagh. I am basically trying to connect the Armstrongs of the today with the ones from the 1911 census and then back to Griffith's Valuation Armstrongs. Armstrongs of Brackey, Griffith's Valuation were Isaac Jr and Sr. Samuel, James, William and Andrew. Looking for advice. It does not look like I can fly directly in Belfast. Margaret Marion

    3. Hi Margaret, This is all very interesting to me as I know Billy Armstrong and his wife Anne. My parents and the Armstrong's are good friends. We now live in Canada but when we were in Ireland we lived just down the road, as they say, in Ballintrain. Billy is getting on in years now so it is a good time to go and see him. Have a great trip. 3. I stayed in another of Belfast's Premier Inn's, good value and you may get a deal if you stay more than one night. Maybe someone could recommend a good B&B near there which would be cheaper. I am not sure how many microfilm readers there are in total but only two have printers attached so you basically have to find what you want on the microfilm on a reader without a printer, then remove it and take it to a reader attached to a printer and then you can print out. It is a bit annoying but its to stop people hogging the printer machines. I had no problem in printing out five pages in a row from one particular church and I saw another woman with about 30 pages. I think if you keep your eye out for when no one is waiting on the printer might work to your advantage. Certainly less strict now than they were before. One thing I found was that time flies when there, so you are right to find out all you can now so you will waste less on your visit. Hope others will be able to help further and you have a fruitful visit. 3. Hello Margaret. You ask for ‘any’ advice. Here is my thought — but it may be wrong, as it is based on the situation at PRONI about 30 years ago. Whilst they had microfilms of many church records at PRONI, and I could view them there; they would NOT permit me to make a print-out of any such church records, UNLESS I had a LETTER from the minister of the relevant church, permitting me to make a copy there. Maybe Robert from Ulster Ancestry or Boyd GRAY or someone else might be able to either confirm or deny that this situation still exists. IF it still exists, then I should make getting such a letter from the relevant minister a priority. 3. Hello Margaret and Ray I visited PRONI last year and had no difficulty making copies of any church records I found. The staff there were very helpful guiding me through anything I needed to do. Obviously things have improved since you last visited Ray. 3. Hi Margaret, We were in Belfast last year and stayed at Premier Inn Cathedral Quarter and the one opposite PRONI. For convenience I would definitely choose the one opposite PRONI. We thought PIs were fantastic value and also enjoyed their restaurants. Margaret in Oz.
