My Hamilton family were living in (Drummond) Co. Aghaloo in the early 1800s. I would presume that they were connected with the Hamilton families in Gwen's email. Does anyone know if there are published family trees of either of those Hamilton families she mentioned. Thanks Margaret in Oz.
Thank you to everyone who provided information on the Hamiltons and McKee surnames. From information provided by Dave Mitchell I have learned that the Sir William Hamilton, son of Sir Claud, who was the landlord of Daniel and Hugh MacKeyes (the individuals of special interest to me) converted from Catholicism to Protestantism in the 1640s and was involved in the Laggan Army. The question is then whether any of his tenants, and particular the pair mentioned above, followed suit. From Faye I learned that the Magees were superintendents for the Abercorn Hamiltons, which seems in line with the information from my family tradition that a close relationship may have existed with the Hamiltons. However the coat of arms on the Magee grave in no way resembles the ones in Fermanagh. Perhaps one further detail that needs to be addressed is the possible identity of the John Key buried at Lisnarick, in Fermanagh (next to the grave of Hugh, possibly his son, on which the coat of arms appears), with a John Key who is excommunicated, in 1667 or possibly before, in the parish of Donaghgedy. I can provide the full text that I transcribed from a record in PRONI if anyone would like to see it. I had assumed that the excommunication was meted out by the Catholic Diocese of Derry. However, there are no bishops matching the names given in the record at PRONI ("his Lordship George Late Lord Bpp of ye Diocese of Derry" who had apparently been succeeded by "his Lordship Robert by divine Providence Lord Bpp of the same Diocese"). In fact, there were no Bishops in that diocese at all during the time. See note below. Why the discrepancy? Which church handed down the excommunication of John Key, Catholic or Anglican, or some other? I hope someone can clarify this for me. Thanks, Roy Vicars Apostolic of Derry 1622-1720 [From 1601 to 1720, no bishop or vicar apostolic resided within the diocese of Derry. From 1601 to 1780, no bishop resided within the City of Derry. They were Anglican bishops. This is from Colby's Ordnance Survey Memoir of Londonderry 1837 .....George Wild or Wilde succeeded in 1661 and died in 1665. This prelate who was a doctor of laws of the university of Oxford, was the son of Henry Wild , a citizen of London.... There is more about his education and history. ..........Robert Mossom DD succeeded in 1665 and died in 1679...... There is a paragraph about his education etc. I can scan it for you if you like.
