Hello fellow genealogists. My husband has very little information on the Hogg family. His father George Ernest came to Cleveland Ohio USA from Cookstown in the early 1920's. Son of Samuel Hogg and Sarah Jane Farrell(1973-1944). They had a slew of children including a Nancie Cousley Hogg, George, Fred, Harold, William and Sam, who all immigrated as well although Nancie went back. Any connections or information?I would have some of the American side to share. Joy Hogg
Hi Joy, Have you tried the 1901 Tyrone census index? That would help you pinpoint where in the Cookstown District the Hogg and Farrell families came from -- whether the town itself or one of the outlying townlands. Once you have a location from the 1901 census, you can check the 1911 census through the LDS -- and be prepared for major discrepancies in ages of adults. The 1901 Tyrone census index is on microfiche in a binder, so at libraries is sometimes shelved and sometimes with the microforms. Do you have ship passenger lists for all of the family (siblings of your direct ancestors included)? Manifests this recent can really surprise you with the amount of detail they show. How about naturalization documents for any who naturalized in the US? You could also check Cookstown BMDs to try to pinpoint your Hogg family origins. The all-Ireland indexes are widely available, including through the LDS, so you should be able to determine which Hoggs in the Cookstown District are yours. I don't think it's a very common name -- I do a lot of Cookstown research and don't recognize it as a name I've often run into. (But maybe my memory is failing? ;-) ) Hope those ideas help. Claire K.
