Hi Norah, I strongly suggest you get the death record. Have you considered the possibility that 30 yo Lily McDougall might be a McD by marriage? That would explain why you can't find a birth that matches for a Lily McD. The death cert. will tell you whether she was single or married, so is your best first step, IMO. (Or, maybe you can find a death notice for her that will tell you whether she's a "wife of" or "daughter of"). Then you'll know whether you need to be searching for her marriage (to find her maiden name) or her birth record next. Hope that helps. Claire K.
