We have been watching rumors about this for a few days. It now seems to have been confirmed so I'm passing the following message along: --------------------------- Seen on another list: You may have heard that Geocities will be closing down later this year (2009). There are many genealogy sites on Geocities, and sadly, many of these sites may be lost if the webmasters don't move the sites to a new location. Yahoo is not notifying anyone about this by e-mail and many webmasters have not updated their sites in years, so-- more likely than not--are not even aware the pages they have posted will be lost. You or someone you know may have genealogy information posted on a Geocities site. USGenWeb & Rootsweb also have had links to Geocities sites. Please help spread the word so genealogy websites won't be lost ------------------------ To climb up on my soapbox for a minute: This is just another example of the problem with the so called "free" genealogy sites. None of them are really free. Someone is paying for them and if it isn't you, either directly or by the access fee you pay, then you may loose access to it at any time without warning. ALWAYS keep this in mind when quoting a "free" site as a source of the data in your genealogy. OK, back on the ground now. :-) If any of you know of another list, or person, who might be interested in the above please consider being the "good Samaritan" and passing the news along Malcolm Archive CD Books Canada Inc. Time for someone to open an new geocities I guess.. just like a large company to come in and buy something and then ruin it. Tammy Eileen L.
