    1. [CoTyIre] RC registers - question
    2. Ellen Elliott via
    3. Hi. I was hoping to find an explanation on how records were worded back then. For example, I found a marriage entry that reads: Bridget of Hugh Trainer and Ann Sloan (I assume Bridget is the bride and her parents are Hugh & Ann) Next line: looks like Sl Peter Rice (?) and Ann Cunningham Are they the sponsors (Sl really is Sp) or groom's parents? Where is the groom's name? Thanks for any advice! 3. For anyone who missed the big reveal, the NLI's RC parish registers are online at registers.nli.ie. I got an initial 404 error, but tried a second time and had no problems accessing the site. And have not been bumped off. Looking good! I've looked through a couple of Tyrone parishes so far, on iPhone. Easy to navigate. Nice enhancements -- map showing adjoining parishes, thumbnails so you can jump ahead to later images quickly, header for each two-page spread giving that spread's year range. Easy to enlarge (the usual 3-finger spread). I assume / hope all this ease of use translates to computer access options... I hope all of you are finding new info, or at least capturing digital images of what you've previously transcribed. If you have problems reading or interpreting the records, post the info to the list so we can find it, and we'll all help each other out! Enjoy! Claire K Sent from my iPhone

    3. It looks like i got the story about the house partly wrong.... At a family reunion recently, a great aunt was talking about a house in the Ulster American Folk Park that was donated by a family member to the Folk Park. I didn't give it much thought at the time as details were sketchy. I have investigated further over the past couple of days and have found out the house was a house located near Plumbridge, Co.Tyrone (not an American house) and that my only connection to the house is that is was acquired by a cousin (Reaney) in 1976 and after it lay derelict was donated to the museum. See below link for the history of the house. http://nmni.com/uafp/Collections/Buildings/Ulster-Buildings/Campbell-House On 7 July 2015 at 08:14, Malcolm Houston <malcolm.houston@gmail.com> wrote: > PRONI is not open at the weekend unfortunately. > > Closest hotel to the folk park is The Mellon Country Inn > > There is a house that was recently rebuilt after being shipped from the > states in the folk park that belonged to a distant relative of mine ???? > > > On 7 Jul 2015, at 08:00, cotyroneireland-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > > > > > > You are receiving this email because you subscribed to the > CoTyroneIreland-D mailing list. 3. THE best place to stay near the Ulster American Folk Park is the TattyKeel. It is not the closest one to the park, but it is near enough and is the best. The owners are wonderful people and Hugh is a local historian which is an added bonus. Monta Lee Monta Lee Dakin Littleton, CO mld780@aol.com In a message dated 7/7/2015 1:04:43 A.M. Tyrone ancestral search trip. I was very impressed with everything. The receptionist was courteous getting me my Proni card in a few minutes. By the way, this card is good for life. I used the research room to get the index numbers, but did not use the microfilm readers. The staff were very helpful with great guidance on how to use the computer indexes for maximum information. I was impressed with the efficiency in receiving my reading room orders. No longer than 10-15minute wait. Just watch for your order number on the many monitors in the room. There is no rush ,take as long as you wish to review the ordered items. I was at PRONI on Tuesday May 26th during the morning and early afternoon and found it was not busy. One could choose most tables that you wished. I was told that Thursday evening is also not busy. I contacted the ministers of Ballygwaley & Aghnacloy Presbyterian Churches by e-mail before my trip to Ireland and made arrangements to visit their respective Churches to view the old record books. They were very accommodative ,producing the Baptism and Marriage registers dating back as far as 1818. I took photos of all the pertinent ones I needed. The Premier Inn across the street, is the only hotel I could see in the area. 3. I visited PRONI 6 weeks ago during a Co. Edward Cobean Ontario Canada

    3. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Malcolm Houston <malcolm.houston@gmail.com> Date: 6 July 2015 at 07:37 Subject: PRONI To: mmarion@rogers.com HI If you are going to PRONI, my advise is to be there at 9am when they open on a midweek morning (flights are probably) cheaper then as well. The Premier Inn is a good value hotel and there are none nearer. When you first enter the reception desk is to your right - you will need to register and they will take your picture and print an access card which you will need to enter the different rooms. After you get your card they will swipe at reception desk and you can they swipe yourself in everytime you visit. head up the stairs when in front of you and go to the glass window at the top of the stairs and purchase your printer credits - they are really cheap £2 for 5 credits (they come on a disposal card) - this allows you to print A4 or A3 and is 1 credit per page regardless of size. buy as many as you need as this will save you from losing your place at the printer. walk along the gangway to the reading room - swipe your card to get access - when you enter head to your right and go to the back of the room - they microfiche machines with printers and at the end of the desks (2 of them). get your notepad etc unpacked at one the go to the information desk and they will help you find the film and show you how to use the machine. you insert the printer credits card into the reader at the side of the printer - when you find the page you are looking for - use the film reader to zoom to fit the page within the boundary boxes and focus the image as best you can and push the print button. you should be able to fly directly into Belfast City aiport (flyBe) which is the closest or belfast international airport - where are you coming from?? if the international there is a bus into Belfast city centre and you could then walk to PRONI (about 20mins) or get a taxi which shouldnt be too expensive. if flying into the city airport - then a taxi to the hotel will probably be the best. really easy to use. if you need anything further, please let me know. Malcolm

    3. Hello Margaret. You ask for ‘any’ advice. Here is my thought — but it may be wrong, as it is based on the situation at PRONI about 30 years ago. Whilst they had microfilms of many church records at PRONI, and I could view them there; they would NOT permit me to make a print-out of any such church records, UNLESS I had a LETTER from the minister of the relevant church, permitting me to make a copy there. Maybe Robert from Ulster Ancestry or Boyd GRAY or someone else might be able to either confirm or deny that this situation still exists. IF it still exists, then I should make getting such a letter from the relevant minister a priority. This is my second trip to Ireland this year, so I have to make this one inexpensive as possible. I have two reasons for going to look at the sixmilecross microfilm at PRONI. From what I can see on the internet, the earlier records were destroyed in the fire. So I have also contacted the pastor at the sixmilecross church to see the records he has. My one regret about my visit in June, was that once I found my Armstrong cousins, I did not have time to stay for a day or two to meet the oldest one, Billy. So that is also the reason I am going back, I do not want to wait a year and maybe not get to see him. He lives near Brackey or Omagh. I am basically trying to connect the Armstrongs of the today with the ones from the 1911 census and then back to Griffith's Valuation Armstrongs. Armstrongs of Brackey, Griffith's Valuation were Isaac Jr and Sr. Samuel, James, William and Andrew. Looking for advice. It does not look like I can fly directly in Belfast. 3. I stayed in another of Belfast's Premier Inn's, good value and you may get a deal if you stay more than one night. Maybe someone could recommend a good B&B near there which would be cheaper. I am not sure how many microfilm readers there are in total but only two have printers attached so you basically have to find what you want on the microfilm on a reader without a printer, then remove it and take it to a reader attached to a printer and then you can print out. It is a bit annoying but its to stop people hogging the printer machines. I had no problem in printing out five pages in a row from one particular church and I saw another woman with about 30 pages. I think if you keep your eye out for when no one is waiting on the printer might work to your advantage. Certainly less strict now than they were before. One thing I found was that time flies when there, so you are right to find out all you can now so you will waste less on your visit. Hope others will be able to help further and you have a fruitful visit.
