    1. Re: [CoTyIre] COWAN family in Fintona
    2. Hi David I THINK I have a connection. Many of my family went to Canada at that time from Tyrone in particular but not only from there, also from Antrim, Sligo etc. but from your perspective at that time, from Ireland! Just need to check it out with my Canadian cousin first - don't want to lead you up the garden path! My probable link is through the Hamilton family (my paternal grandmother's family). It seems to me the Cowans and Hamiltons inter-married and hence our connect! By the way. I was born in N.Ireland but I'm now in Australia too (WA). 1. [CoTyIre] COWAN family in Fintona
    2. David Cowan via
    3. Hi everyone, I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the following family for which I was given information about last month. The family consists of Thomas Smith COWAN (1795-1841), his wife, Charlotte McFARLAND (1804-1874) and their children - John (1829-1915), William Frederick (1830-1918), Charlotte (1832-1854), Robert (1834-1851) and Richard James (1837-1920). Thomas is reported as being a merchant in Fintona who immigrated in 1839 to what is now Canada where he was joined by his family in 1841. He died of typhoid fever later in 1841. The sons, John and William Frederick, ended up in the Ontarian city of Oshawa where they became prominent citizens. For your information, I have already found the following - a “Find A Grave Memorial” page for Thomas, a Wikipedia article about a business started by John and William, and a book which I found online called “Historic Sketches of Oshawa” which contains biographical detail for both John and William. I particularly interested in finding out more about the family's time in Ireland. Any assistance would be appreciated. Regards David Cowan Adelaide, South Australia

    3. Would anyone please know who was the wife of the Rev'd Charles Hemphill (died 1844) who was the Presbyterian minister at Badoney Lower from 1799 until his death?I am thinking it could be the Mrs. Hemphill (don't know her first name) who died on 3 May 1858 at Straw, near Newtownstewart, age 84 years. This Mrs. Hemphill was the daughter of William McFarland and his wife Maria Buchanan (1754 to 1835) of Leardan, Co. Tyrone. The Rev'd Mr. Hemphill had at least two daughters and one son. Thank you. I contacted the Presbyterian Historical Society of Ireland and they do not know who the wife was either. Darrel Hockley Regina, SK, Canada

    1. [CoTyIre] Hy-Many Trainor / Treanor DNA
    2. Mike Kelly via
    3. Does your Trainor line branch off the Hy-Many pedigree of O'Donovan's chart? Do have any idea what I am talking about? There are a few surnames which branch off the same ancestor, Máine Mór from the 4th century Ireland. He originally came from what is now know as Co. Tyrone and travelled to Connacht around 357 AD where he concurred the people called the Fir Bolg, ruled by King Cian d'Fhearaibh Bolg. Here is a bit of literature on the Ui Maine or Hy-Many. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U%C3%AD_Maine I know Trainor isn't listed on wiki but it is definitely one of the surnames which came from the descendants of Maine Mor. The Trainor DNA line (or spelling variations) seemed to have branched off of the family line around 600 AD. Here is a bit on the SNPS of latest Big Y DNA testing going on for the Hy-Many The DOM-5 (dominant 5 single nucleotide polymorphisms) all occurred between 600AD (generation 8 after Maine Mor) and 1200AD (generation 25) (600 years for 5 BIG-Y mutations is about right - one every 120 years or bout one every 4 generations). After generation 25 there is some branching which I think is the effect of the grandchildren of William Boy O'Kelly (28), his father (27) or grandfather (26). Assuming that to be the case, the BIG-Y results to date show there to be four Hy-Many lines. Two lines are Kellys and two lines are non-Kelly Hy-Many being the Madden/Trainor line that branched off at 600AD and the Keogh line that branched off at generation 25 after Domhnall (25) - the Keogh branch is clearly consistent with the branching on O'Donovan's chart. The pedigree chart is from the book, The Tribes and Customs of The Hy Many. I have the pedigree chart in a PDF file if anyone wants to see it. It covers about 1000 years or more. Baptisms 02 Nov 1744 to 17 Oct 1777 2. Baptisms 04 Apr 1780 to 30 Dec 1799 3. Marriages 12 Sep 1742 to 25 Aug 1771 4. Marriages 04 Apr 1780 to 18 Sep 1799 5. Deaths 30 Nov 1744 to 21 Jul 1772 6. Deaths 25 Mar 1780 to 1799 2. Microfilm 05599/04: 1. All of the events start in 1833 Does anybody know: 1. Why there are no records for the period of 1800 to 1833? 2. Are these records available anywhere? I am seeking baptism and marriage records for a Thomas Hagan married to Bridget Brennan. Their 3 sons were: 1. Francis born 1819. 2. Thomas James born 31-Dec-1826. 3. Patrick born 9-Jan-1831. From the above birth dates I have assumed that Thomas and Bridget: 1. Were married 1816-1818. 2. Were born 1791-1793. Any help would be appreciated. Patrick Hagan Surrey, British Columbia, Canada

    3. Hello Ellen I've been working with Catholic registers for 20 years and they can be a headache! One thing for sure, they need time to examine if you are to be accurate which is what everyone aims to be. >From my experience there is no such thing as a "speedy" search of Catholic records. 3. Hi Ellen Are you sure this isn't a baptism rather than a marriage ? If you give the details of where to find it others can make a more informed opinion Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 09/07/2015 13:00, Ellen Elliott via wrote: > Hi. > > I was hoping to find an explanation on how records were worded back then. > > For example, I found a marriage entry that reads: > > Bridget of Hugh Trainer and Ann Sloan (I assume Bridget is the bride and her > parents are Hugh & Ann) > > Next line: looks like Sl Peter Rice (?) and Ann Cunningham > > Are they the sponsors (Sl really is Sp) or groom's parents? > > Where is the groom's name? > > Thanks for any advice! > > Ellen > USA

    3. Hello Ellen. This is a baptism, not a marriage. Bridget {child of} Hugh Trainer and Ann Sloan God parents : Peter Rice and Ann Cunningham Catholic registers can be difficult to di-cypher especially as many are recorded in "scrawley" Latin. best regards Robert www.ulsterancestry.com > To: cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com > Date: Thu, 9 Jul 2015 08:00:34 -0400 > Subject: [CoTyIre] RC registers - question > From: cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com > > Hi. > > Ellen > USA > > > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: cotyroneireland-bounces@rootsweb.com > [mailto:cotyroneireland-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Nivard Ovington > via > Sent: Thursday, July 9, 2015 5:34 AM > To: cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: [CoTyIre] RC registers > > They are equally easy to navigate via computer > > Those I have looked at have been a joy, a few are hard to read but the > majority are clear > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > On 09/07/2015 07:03, Claire K via wrote: > > For anyone who missed the big reveal, the NLI's RC parish registers are > online at registers.nli.ie. 3. I missed the big reveal Claire, so thanks a million for posting this info. I went to the site and found the baptism record for Sarah Connolly in 1845. I'd had a transcription from the Irish Family History Foundation but an image is always the most excellent document to have! Is anyone on this list researching the family of Arthur Connolly and Sarah McLaughlin? They married about 1831 and their parish was Killyclogher.  Thanks again Claire!!
