I saw this on another list, where someone said their Irish relative went to the U.S., and is on this database going from the U.S. To England, where he joined the British navy for WWI. This is a good suggestion. My grandfather apparently went to South Africa from Co. Tyrone in order to earn money to marry my grandmother. If I had not had the story from my uncle, I wouldn’t have had any idea where to look for him. He worked for his passage in Abbeyleix, Queen's Co., where I found him on the census in 1901, a “shopman.” Eventually I found the passenger lists for both the trip to and from South Africa and then on to Philadelphia. He wasn’t in the Merchant Navy (he was a grocer his entire life), but it just shows how far afield we sometimes have to go to find our missing ancestors! I agree with an earlier list member – this is the best list I have ever belonged to and the website has helped me so much. Thanks to everyone who contributes! 29 July 2015 3 reminders from CTI Admin: 1. No off-topic posts -- let's stick to genealogy in Co. Tyrone. I hope those who are interested have been digging into the digitized microfilms of the R.C. parish registers held by the National Library of Ireland (see http://registers.nli.ie/about). The on-line resources we have now is a vast improvement from even five years ago, but there are still many more record sets in archives and repositories for us to track down and share with fellow list members. 2. The list web site is an all-VOLUNTEER effort and no one is paid. I know that 99.99% of us truly appreciate all the work and effort that has gone into and continues to go into our fantastic site. A number of people on this list have gone above and beyond and spent a lot of time to help people with queries. Even if they are unable to find the record you are looking for, please THANK them for the time they have spent trying to help you to show your appreciation. Courtesy is contagious. :) 3. Digest Mode and replies. For those who receive posts in the bundled digest mode and are replying to the list, please remember to: (a) delete the irrelevant portions of the digest (b) CHANGE the subject line to a meaningful one from "Digest ### ..." I hope everyone is making inroads on your trees! All the best, Clare L. Ass't List Admin
On July 1, Cecil the lion, one of the most famous and inoffensive animals in one of Zimbabwe's national parks, was shot by a bow hunter. The hunter was a dentist from Minnesota who paid $55,000 for a permit before shooting the 13-year-old big cat. I just signed a Care2 petition demanding justice for Cecil. Will you sign too? Len Swindley and I create about 99% of the "*FREE*" records on CoTyroneIreland.com. We often receive requests for specific records and comments about obtaining "*FREE*" records. In this light, I wish to make the following comments: - - *NOTHING appears online at NO COST!! * - Someone pays for the server, the domain name, and the storage on the site - Someone has to transcribe the information into a suitable digital format - Someone has to supply to create the html file, as well the labour and effort to place it online - Someone has to volunteer their own time to do all of this - FamilySearch.org is a prime example of a huge site with millions if not billions of records... all *FREE* - The true cost of maintaining this site day-to-day must by huge without considering the labour costs of creating all the data - Who funds FS? Although I am not of Latter Day Saints faith, I would suggest it is funded by the Church organization with an army of volunteers - There have been comments that PRONI should put all their records online at *NO COST*. - Who would fund such an effort? The taxpayers of Northern Ireland? - Seems to me the taxpayer in USA, Canada, Australia or any other country would be reluctant to fund placing all of their historical records online *FREE*?? - Enough said! - *CoTyroneIreland.com (CTI)* is a community website totally reliant upon the contributions of volunteers. If you want to see more records online* FREE*, I would suggest *YOU* begin transcribing data to put online. How can you do this?? - - Find a need which has not been filled - Obtain access to the records - Transcribe them........ (but only after determining a proper format in which to store the transcription) - If the foregoing is not possible, go to FamilySearch.org; click on INDEXING and begin assisting their transcription efforts - And don’t forget to regularly check the CTI Links page where there are links to many record repositories and family history societies Respectfully Jim McKane

Hi Norm Presume you have been on the National Archives website -- as for the 1901 and 1911 Census searches. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ Change year to "1851" and you should be away. Almost nothing survives for co. Tyrone -- so if it ain't on the N.A. website, then you ain't gonna find it!
