Hi everyone, The Tyrone Constitution along with the all the others Len gave is also available on Find My Past (they're owned by the same company!). I've also found the Belfast Newsletter a good source of info for my family. Best wishes, Sarah Wellington, New Zealand ----------------------------- Message: 1 Date: Sat, 1 Aug 2015 23:53:20 +1000 From: Len Swindley <len_swindley@hotmail.com> Subject: [CoTyIre] Tyrone Constitution has been digitised To: "COTYRONEIRELAND@rootsweb.com" <cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <BLU181-W86D8241B9B3988B37A757AE0890@phx.gbl> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hello Listers, Some months back there was considerable excitement on this list re. an online petition to the British Library requesting digitisation of the Tyrone Constitution. Today I checked the British Newspaper Archive; www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk and was delighted to note that the Tyrone Constitution has been digitised. Listers should note that there are a further two newspapers that are essential for Tyrone research; The Derry Journal covers north and mid-Tyrone and the Enniskillen Chronicle & Erne Packet is essential for news and personal announcements for mid and South Tyrone. I also found the Northern Whig (Belfast) contained a great marriage announcement relevant to my Strabane forebears. Good luck with your research! This might help - On July 8, 2015, Catholic records were released to view and for free at: http://registers.nli.ie/ Baptism, Marriages, Burials for most, not all of the Parishes (nice map to help you figure out most likely parishes. Bad news if you don't have a clue where your folks lived). Not all years for all records are represented. In fact, some parish years/records are quite skimpy. Some of the records were written by a person whose handwritten skills created a work of art. Most were not. Many are barely legible or decipherable. If that weren't enough, you have to go through page by page as they are not indexed. And even if you find someone who sort of fits the bill, how can you be sure if you don't have other supporting documentation? Example: marriage record where the couple's names are 'right' (but common), the timeframe is within reason, but with no parent's names provided (and you didn't know them anyway) how can you be sure it's your couple? Still, I can do it at home and not have spent the money to fly across the pond to sit at PRONI going through microfilm. When I do go over, hopefully, I'll have nailed at least the village so I can stand on the old sod (along with going through microfilm) <sign> so little time, so many scans. The website FAQs - http://registers.nli.ie/help. This link may be of some use, https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Ireland_Catholic_Church_Records. And if any of you nice folks run across a Hugh Treanor or Catherine Sherlock - please give me a shout. :-) Ellen Virginia USA -----Original Message----- From: cotyroneireland-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cotyroneireland-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Len Swindley via Sent: Sunday, August 2, 2015 9:34 AM To: COTYRONEIRELAND@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CoTyIre] Clogher baptism records PRONI Guide to Church Records records any registers/ records that await filming and the years covered and are still held at the local church, but in the case of Clogher no such comment is contained within the entry. As neither NLI and PRONI have filmed them it must be assumed that the baptisms were not recorded or the register has been destroyed. There was no legal compunction to maintain registers. This changed upon the introduction of civil registration in 1864 when the responsibility of recording BMDs became the responsibility of the State. As an example, I can quote the records for the church attended by my forebears; there are no surviving records prior to 1865. Hello Eamonn I take it, as you mention the NLI, that it's Clogher Catholic records you are refering to. The following are available as public records. You would need to contact the Church directly to see if they have anything earlier in local custody R.C. Aughintaine [sic Aghintain] (Fivemiletown) (Clogher diocese) Baptisms, 1870-1881; marriages, 1870-83. R.C. Clogher (Clogher diocese) Baptisms, 1856-1881; marriages, 1825-35 and 1840-81. Contact details from their website are Clogher Diocesan Office Phone{ROI} 047 81019 Email diocesanoffice@clogherdiocese.ie best regards Robert > Date: Sat, 1 Aug 2015 19:54:03 +0100 > To: cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com > Subject: [CoTyIre] baptism/birth records > From: cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com > > Folks, > > does anyone know if baptism records for the parish of Clogher Co. Eamonn, For church records of any denomination, go to the PRONI web site an look at its "Guide to Church Records". It is arranged by civil parish. ~Clare L. > On Aug 1, 2015, at 2:54 PM, eamonn teague via <cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > Folks, > > does anyone know if baptism records for the parish of Clogher Co. Thankyou again His name was William FAULKNER. a rather popular name unfortunately. born abt 1799 1800 in Killoon Presbyterian Occupation; Farmer and Harness maker Married 1823 Brigh Presbyterian Church Stewartstown. Apparently sailed to PA in search of work and died suddenly at the home of a friend William Clement who wrote to Williams Wife in Tyrone informing her of the death on 14 June 1848.Following an Inquest was buried Franklin Cemetery Kensington PA. Have contacted Pennsylvania History and Library but they couldn't help me Stab in the dark but always open for suggestions. And can't help but agree it's a great site and thanks to all who contribute I have been fortunate to meet up with Dr William Railston at PRONI and Northern Ireland Historical felt if he couldn't help me nobody could, but I won't give up. Very greatful for the previous suggestions which will keep me busy Maryanne NZ. It's great to see the RC Register online at last, Unfortunately not back far enough for my Grandmother. However I am still on the search for my other Ancestor who left Tyrone in 1846 for USA. He died in an accident on 14 June 1848 and was buried in the Franklin Cemetery Kensington PA. I would have thought it to be a Coroners case. However I can not find him on the Cemetery buriel list, although I understand the Cemetery was eventually built over and turned into a Playground. How shocking. Some bodies were removed, but I wouldn't know where to start looking. No record of the ship he left Ireland on either so it is a real brick wall for me. Wonder if he may have landed in NY first as many of them did.Following his death, his Wife and family emigrated to Australia. I have plenty of info on them fortunately.Any idea Also may thanks to listers prior to me going from NZ to Tyrone . Had a wonderful trip, took many photographs of places my Ancestors had walked. The church in Bligh where they married and had family Baptised Such a beautiful part of Ireland. Sadly no headstones found. Philadelphia was a popular port of immigration as well and I would imagine if he was there and working he came in there and not New York. Otherwise he may have very well found work in NY unless there was family located in Philly prior to his arrival. What was his name? Give me his information and I will see what I can dig up. If the marriage of your forebears took place in a parish church (Church of Ireland) it will be locatable on FamilySearch; the Irish civil registration indexes are available for online searching - however you will need to know the registration district for accuracy. Protestant marriages were registered from 1845 - Catholic events did not fall within civil registration until 1864. Marriages generally took place in the church of the bride's family. Hope this opens a new avenue for your research, Len Swindley, Melbourne, Australia > > > > On 30/07/15 11:48 AM, "Pat H via" <cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > I have found three baptisms in the R.C. registers which I already knew > > about but have not been able to find a marriage for the parents. Hi, Maryanne - Unfortunately, your guy came over in between the 1840 and 1850 Federal censuses; perhaps county census was taken in an off year. Many states had them. I am sending you several links but be forewarned some may no longer be active. This list is very busy but overall even rootsweb lists are ghost towns. I have not been on most of these sites, but you made me realize I haven't tried hard enough to find my Owen Treanor from Ulster (probably County Down based on his brother's tombstone). Thanks for the unknowing nudge. :-) Be careful of any site asking for money and promising you vital records. You most likely will have to pay I recommend you work directly with the official website listed next: THIS IS THE OFFICIAL GOVERNMENT WEBSITE FOR WESTMORELAND COUNTY (WHERE KENSINGTON IS LOCATED). http://www.co.westmoreland.pa.us/index.aspx?nid=333 - death records, wills and link to other vital records. http://www.co.westmoreland.pa.us/index.aspx?NID=1572 http://www.archives.com/genealogy/vital-records-westmoreland-county-pa.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Kensington,_Pennsylvania - background on Kensington that is now part of greater Philadelphia. He may have sailed directly to Philly, my Irish great grand uncle did. There has always been a large port there. Ship records are very scanty and are held at NARA in Washington DC. It falls under Westmoreland county. http://www.co.westmoreland.pa.us/index.aspx?NID=152 - Court House may have early records. Effective April 13, 2015, exact payment must be included with any document(s) sent for recording. Or know where to direct you. I'd suggest you contact Catholic churches listed in one of these links. http://www.pa-roots.com/westmoreland/ - Westmoreland County Genealogy Project has many sources listed. https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Westmoreland_County,_Pennsylvania_Gen ealogy - the Mormon site. http://www.pagenweb.org/~westmoreland/ http://genealogytrails.com/penn/westmoreland/ http://resources.rootsweb.ancestry.com/USA/PA/Westmoreland/ http://usgwarchives.net/pa/westmoreland/ http://www.westmorelandhistory.org/genealogy/index.cfm https://genpa.org/county/westmoreland-county-pennsylvania http://www.interment.net/us/pa/westmoreland.htm http://noel.mcn.org/Westmoreland/Westmoreland.htm http://www.pa-roots.org/data/list.php?841 Good hunting! Not necessarily correct that they would have married in R C church. May have married in her church, particularly if her father was high up in the church, the family was well known in their township and well known to worship in CI church but with the understanding that any children from the marriage were baptised and brought up Catholic. Or they may not have married before but may have married after...I would also look carefully for a marriage around the time of the baptisms of the children as some times the marriage was regularised at the same time. Great idea I didn¹t find my ancestors but I had fun looking. Thank you to all who put such helpful information on CTI! Hi all I am a firm believer in trying all and every database I can just in case something pops up, which is often the case Just in case some haven't looked, in the England & Wales Probate Calendars on Ancestry (1858 to 1966 presently) A keyword search for Tyrone Ireland gets 3,596 hits as the place of death Perhaps worth having a look at Just the keyword Ireland gets 121,213 hits -- Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK)
I have found three baptisms in the R.C. registers which I already knew about but have not been able to find a marriage for the parents. The first baptism was in 1865. The husband was R.C. but the wife was protestant (Church of Ireland). I am assuming they would have married in the R.C. church, would that be correct? Cheers Pat
Hello Kathleen In my case ...... "My grandfather [also] ...... went to South Africa from Co. Tyrone ........ [where he] marr(ied) my grandmother ...." There is a good online catalogue for South Africa's archives at http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/ (Home page: http://www.national.archives.gov.za/index.htm ) It is quite difficult to use for those not familiar with South Africa and its history, but does turn up information and/or access to [requesting] documents even for those who did not stay long. By all means, drop me an email with some names to <dm60@mweb.co.za> and I will do a quick search for you. My grandfather apparently went to South Africa from Co. Tyrone in order to earn money to marry my grandmother. If I had not had the story from my uncle, I wouldn’t have had any idea where to look for him. He worked for his passage in Abbeyleix, Queen's Co., where I found him on the census in 1901, a “shopman.” Eventually I found the passenger lists for both the trip to and from South Africa and then on to Philadelphia. He wasn’t in the Merchant Navy (he was a grocer his entire life), but it just shows how far afield we sometimes have to go to find our missing ancestors! I agree with an earlier list member – this is the best list I have ever belonged to and the website has helped me so much. Thanks to everyone who contributes! Not that everyone's Irish relations would have done the same, but it may help someone... Clare, In my (only) ten or so years of experience, this is undoubtedly the singly best county web site and discussion group I've encountered. The vast array of volunteer input is astounding -- and thank you for all that work! I wish I could to that in some significant way. It is sincerely appreciated.
