State Library needs a visit! Help needed in Perth (W. Australia) Hi folks Apologies for being off-topic (not co. Tyrone per se), but I'm desperately looking for access to a letter dd. 8 March 1831 where a typescript copy is held in the State Library of Western Australia, in Perth. The item is listed in the library’s online catalogue – however Aussie rules determine that I need the help of a local researcher who is personally able to go to the library at the Perth Cultural Centre, 25 Francis Street. All indications are that this is a copy of a letter written to my 3.g-grandmother by one of her younger sons, a merchant navy captain who worked the seas between England and W. Australia (and whose eldest brother had sailed with Flinders on the Investigator). Anyone in Perth or with any contact/s in those parts? Any assistance or guidance would be most appreciated. 3. Hi Archie I am a bit confused as I thought you were searching for John O'Hagen. May not find anything on the Tyrone website for the wife's name if he changed it to his wife's name unless the Bright family also came from Co Tyrone and you say some came from Suffolk in England. Have you thoroughly searched our wonderful Co Tyrone website? Spelling in those days not fixed and in all your searching you should use all the variations...Hagen, Hagan, O'Hagen, O'Hagan. You could also use all those variations when searching on FS & Ancestry for shipping records. It is especially important to search under the root of the surname ie dropping the 'O' or if you are searching for 'McXXX', the 'Mc". There was a thought at some stages that dropping the "O' meant less of a connection to the RC church and the reputation of the restive Irish! I did a quick search for the combinations above on the website and found some Tyrone entries including one on the Hearth Money Roll which showed the family to be Roman Catholic as you have deduced. Cathy PS This is the time when you look at all the family legends including the names of farm or house properties that the family owned after emigrating. Often they named their property after a place in the Co in Ireland that they came from. I have also seen on a couple of records that they had actually named a child with a middle name of the place they came from in Ireland. Family stories about where they sailed from and such can provide clues. 3. Dear Archie, I am replying to the email you sent to the Co. Tyrone website. Researching in Ireland before 1800 is really difficult. If your ancestor had a child in 1785 he must have been born in at least 1760. You don’t say whether that was in Ireland or USA. I would suggest that you search our community website http://cotyroneireland.com/ for the name O’Hagen which may give you some idea of the prevalence of that surname in Co. Tyrone. Otherwise I believe you could search the Archives of this mailing list through Rootsweb to see if anyone else is searching for this surname. Best I could do unfortunately. Margaret in Oz.

    3. Eamonn, BTW, there is also a townland (much further south in County Clare and maybe not of interest to you): Townland Acres County Barony Parish PLU Province Knockaunanerrigal 27 Clare Inchiquin Dysert Ennis Munster So there are the three townlands with “errigal" in the name, but also three (larger) civil parishes, including the parish Errigal (possibly of interest) in County Londonderry. Pretty soon you’ll have all the possibilities!
