    1. Re: [CoTyIre] Bailey family
    2. Len Fluhrer via
    3. Hi Gerald: I don't have the book in front of me but this sounds like the Bailey's that are recorded in Robert Wendel Camm's, The Camm's of Usborne. (Usborne Township, Ontario, Canada) Is your bunch Bible Christian then I would recommend that source. If instead your Bailey's were Quaker then I suggest looking at a very faded text that it is in the London Room at London Public Library, London, Ontario which is called Old Sparta and its neighborhood, Elgin County, Ontario Buck, Charles Spurgeon 1979. This book is very faded and very difficult to read but the sections on the Bailey family in Sparta, Elgin County, Ontario is somewhat readable. The name Bailey has several alternate spellings Bayly was most common in England and Ireland and also Bealey according to my sources the name is very ancient and represents the jobs of the Bayly Men who were basically Engineers who constructed fortifications for the Motte-and-Bayly early castle works. As a result there are multiple Bailey/Bealy/Baeley/Bayly names out of Ireland and England that are really not related. However, the story you tell about one being born while on the way over matches close to my mom's relations at Usborne. Leonard G. Fluhrer III len3@golden.net

    2. Gerald Bailey via
    3. My name is Gerald Bailey and I am looking for information on the William Bailey and Jane family that came to the USA from Ireland in 1827. Their son David Bailey was born on board the ship to Canada. The William Bailey family got to New York about 19 Aug 1828 from Canada. A brother of William Bailey called David Bailey came to New York about two years before William. There were 3 children with the family and a young woman about 16 who could have been a sister to William, but has not been found. She may have gone back to Ireland. I am looking for the name of the ships from Ireland and then from Canada to the USA. Also just where in Ireland did they come from? They may have lived in Cork, Ireland for a time. Any help??

    2. Len Swindley via
    3. Hello Heather, Doohan is a most uncommon family name in Co. Tyrone and the only families recorded in Griffiths Valuation (c1860) are all located in Legphressy townland, Longfield East Parish, approx 8-10 kms south of the village of Drumquin. GRIFFITHS VALUATION LONGFIELD EAST PARISH c1860 Legphressy Townland Heads of Households: Hugh, Patrick and Bridget DOOHAN Looking to the tithe applotment book we find: TITHE APPLOTMENT BOOK: LONGFIIELD PARISH PARISH 1829 Legphressy Townland Tithepayers: Hugh, Owen & Widow DOOHAN EMIGRATION RECORDS: "Mary Ann"sailing from Londonderry to St. John 1852 DOOHAN Patrick, Drumquin "Mary Ann"sailing from Londonderry to St John 1852 (second sailing?) DOOHAN, Michael, Edward (12) & Mary (7), Drumquin There are no Doohans recorded in Langfield East parish in the 1901 census indicating that the family had died or entirely emigrated. All the above data was compiled from pages and links on our CountyTyroneIreland (CTI) website. Is there another county genealogy website in Ireland offering so much? Trusting this makes sense and assists your search. Regards, Len Swindley, Melbourne, Australia

    3. Hi, Heather, The Archives of New Brunswick have a wonderful search site: http://archives.gnb.ca/Search/VISSE/141B7.aspx?culture=en-CA&guid=0317d509-e9aa-41c2-8450-30f7e7acf115 I found a note of Patrick's death in a section called burial permits, but was actually a round up of deaths in the newspaper. The birth of daughter Mary and her marriage are in these free records. Mother's name is given as McKenna in both. I found Patrick's death in the Drouin collection, giving his date as 3 Jan 1909, and age as 84. This jibes with the age in the 1901 Census, but would make him born in 1825. (On Ancestry) He is not in the 1871 Census, but he is listed in a Fredericton City Directory for 1871 on Ancestry. The landing at Gloucester, MA is a new one on me. It's a tiny place, those perhaps in the heyday of whaling it was bigger. But I've never seen passenger records for Gloucester, ever. That's not to say that it didn't happen, it just very much out of the ordinary. Also bear in mind that the eldest son was born in Ireland in 1856. There seems a huge gap to the next child that I found. But I'd expect that son Michael was named for Patrick's father. As I'm sure others will say: somewhere there's a document on THIS side of the pond that will help you narrow your search.
