Hi List: I received a very kind, and informative, letter today, from Rev Kenneth Henderson, the pastor of Aughnacloy Presbyterian Church. He indicated that there is a significant difference between the Aughnacloy Records held at the church, and the records held at Proni. The differences are as follows. The period I was interested in was 1800-1830): a) Proni: Marriages: 1812-1822 ; Baptisms: 1812-1827; Burials: none be) Aughnacloy: Marriages: from 1842; Baptisms: from 1845; both are incomplete: Burials: No burial ground, although 1 minister and 1 missionary are buried on the church grounds. Rev Henderson advised most Presbyterians were probably buried in St James COI Cemetery in Aughnacloy. Rev Henderson also advised there is a cemetery on Skey Townland, which is where my Cobean ancestors originated from !! Does anyone know the name of this Cemetery on Skey ? Could someone kindly do a look up for burials at the St James and Skey Cemeteries and advise if there are any Cobeans/Cobanes/Cobains/Cobaens/Cabbains, etc buried there ? Rev Henderson also advised that Ahgnacloy grew out of an older congregation at Augalow. Is this the same church, or different from Aghaloo ? If different, where was it ? Is there a URL for it ? In summary, there is no cemetery at Aughnacloy, and the records held at Aughnacloy are very limited, and much more extensive records are held at Proni. Kindest Regards Jim White Naples, Florida
Hello Folks, It has been a while since I last posted to the group. Since my last posting last August, I have visited and researched in Ireland twice. Both times, I found the staff at P.R.O.N.I., excellent and helpful. They completely understood that it took me about a day to become familiar with the finding aids and system. They were very patient and advised me as to which records to search for the most promising results. I hope to begin posting more frequently, and contributing to the list as I can. Cheers, Kevin
McCARROLL (or CARROLL), Michael Joseph, born in Corkhill, Co. Tyrone, 1879; immigrated to San Francisco 1867 on the MS Eutruria, then returned to Omagh and Fintona, Co. Tyrone, where he became a merchant and auctioneer. He died in 1924 and was buried in Eskragh RC cemetery, in the family plot. In examining Patricia McSorely's A While With Your Own Ones, I noted a picture of a receipt, dated July 1910, made out to Patrick McCarroll of Larnaglare (sic) for merchandise from MICHAEL J. CARROLL, General Merchant. Would anyone know just who this general merchant was, and exactly where he was located in July 1910? My grandfather's place of business, which included spirits, was on Main Street in Fintona. It appeared that he did not return until about 1912, but we have no record of his return or have we seen any manifests with his name on them. Although I do not believe this would be "himself" the need to cover our bases. Regards, Jim Carroll
Hi Robert, Thanks, that makes great sense! Inexperienced researchers may be frustrated by it just being the calendars, but anyone who's ever traveled to PRONI and begrudged the time it takes to get up to speed on pulling the numbers for what to order into the Reading Room will see this as a great time saver! Personally, I look forward to it going online. Claire K. Hello Claire, PRONI have scanned their catalogues/calenders {you know the big blue/red/black books that line the walls of search room} These are going on line some time later this year, not the actual contents of the Archive. I have a feeling that this may further fustrate rather than help distance researchers as they will see on line for the first time indexes to hundreds of thousands of available paper collections but will not be able to get at the actual content. best regards Robert www.ulsterancestry.com > > A question re NI news reporting I'm hoping someone living in NI can > answer for me. Hi all, I've had a lot of questions, and can now confirm that the FGS Conference -- Sept. 3-6 in Philadelphia -- will have recorded lectures available for sale after the conference, for speakers who have agreed to have their lectures recorded. Copies of the syllabus will also be available for sale afterwards. All will be available only as long as supplies last, however. Great news for anyone trying to figure out how to clone themselves to get to all the lectures they'd like! Forget the science, and just enjoy yourself. You may be able to get those other session afterwards. Regards, Claire K seekay@comcast.net Plan now! This index is almost completely online. Recently added were the Ms, all 54 webpages of them; plus the Ns, Os, Us and Vs. Hi list, I've seen several announcements lately that an index to RIC enlistment records from 1816-1921 is now online at Ancestry.co.uk -- and at least one comment that the index has been online for some time as a work in progress (and is still incomplete). Here's Ancestry's description of the database: "About Ireland, The Royal Irish Constabulary 1816-1921 "The Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) was created in 1816, and initially staffed mainly by Irish-born men. However, toward the 1900s, and especially afterwards, the RIC recruited men from countries such as England, Scotland, Wales, and the United States. The records of the RIC were only indexed annually by the date of enlistment. Until this database was created, the only way to identify whether an ancestor joined the forces was an extremely time-consuming search. Some people joined for a few days or weeks, others stayed for years, and quite a few migrated. There are mentions in the index on whether a person emigrated, died, or married. "The original records go into greater details, showing where each man was stationed, where he had relatives, whether he got married, and if so the date, illnesses, conduct, promotions, cause of death if died in the force; pensioned or retired; as well as a physical description. The index shows the name of each man, a year or birth or an age on enlistment; a county of birth or a country; whether single or married, comments such as died, emigrated, etc., and the reference film number and page for fuller details. This index is an important source for Irish research, even if your ancestor didn't appear to have been in the RIC. He may have enlisted for a few days or weeks and signed out. His details are still on record. This index is a work in progress. This latest update adds another 11,074 records to the previous 58,433 records." Just in case any of you missed the announcement of the update to the database and want to re-search it, or didn't know about the database at all.... Keep your eye on Ancestry.co.uk for additional updates. Hope that helps someone. Regards, Claire K seekay@comcast.net Plan now! Hi all, A question re NI news reporting I'm hoping someone living in NI can answer for me. My cousin in Belfast (who does not do genealogy research, but knows all the family stories from growing up on the family farm in Tyrone) says a recent news report is that "all of the PRO records" are going online. I assume she means PRONI (because she asked if this means I won't be going to Ireland to research in the future). The only PRONI story I know is that they're building a new facility in the Titanic Quarter of Belfast and eventually PRONI will relocate there. Has anyone in NI heard anything about a major digitization effort, as well? Or did she just misremember / misunderstand the "moving" story as a "digitizing" story? I checked PRONI's site and the latest news release is re the move to the Titanic Quarter, with no mention of digitizing any of the materials. (Yes, I take with a very large grain of salt the "all records" part of the story, but wonder if there is a "some records" story circulating). The only digitizing efforts I remember are PRONI working with OSNI to digitize GV maps, and PRONI working to convert their old (clunky) geographic data files (from the computers that were there in the old days before the renovation to the current layout of the reading room) to a modern database. I haven't heard anything about either one in quite some time -- does anyone know if they're still ongoing? Thanks for any enlightenment so I can untangle my cousin's story... Hi all I found these Irish passengers who arrived in America in the early 1800's. It is from the book " Names of Irish Passengers to America" by O'Laughlin. >From the Archives of the Irish Genealogical Foundation. There are more names....most listed as "Ireland" but these stated "Co Tyrone" as their home.Their are quite a few men who did NOT make it to the ships destination because a British ship stopped them and took the "young" men as "recruits". This was VERY common back then. So if you wonder why a male relative did NOT arrive with his family...it is very possible that THIS happened to him. Good morning from another hot, hot day in the Central Coast area of California, which doesn't help my "internal combustion" to cool any over the disappointment I feel about failing to find Patrick Skiffington where we thought he might have started out his life! I finally, broke down and paid for some research through Irish World, to see if we could at least establish that my husband's great-grandfather Patrick Skiffington came from the Donaghmore/Dungannon, Co. Tyrone area, with the further hope we could find his parents and any siblings. All of the birthdates/baptisms on record for the Skiffington (var. sps.) name in the Dungannon area cover the years between 1823-1829, but Patrick had to be born around 1815 as he went off to fight in the American Civil War in 1863 when he was 47. We have confirmation that he married in Baltimore, Maryland 1840 when he'd be about 25 then. What now? Do we just give up after trying to establish where he was born, his parentage and siblings, after all these years of sleuthing? Perhaps we've been barking up the wrong tree and he wasn't born in Donaghmore/Dungannon, but we have no idea where to begin to look for him. A relative couldn't find anyone of his name/age when she went to PRONI in Belfast last year. Maybe he used a nom de plume when he came to America, we think around 1834! Annoyingly, another Patrick Skiffington was found who may be the brother of Bernard Skiffington m. Helen Houston, who ended up in Bothwell, Lanarkshire. I have lots of information on him, and for a while I thought maybe Bernard and my husband's Patrick might have been brothers, but the birthdates are off. Bernard's parents were John Skiffington and Mary Qin(n). Most of Bernard's family stayed in Lanarkshire, with a few crossing the water to start new lives elsewhere...but not back in Ireland. Any suggestions where we can go now as we seem to have exhausted every source? Maisie --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
