    1. [CoTyIre] National Archives of Ireland
    2. Teena
    3. Hello All I popped into the National Archives of Ireland on-line as I've not been there for a long time. I searched the archives for the Parish my ancestors and came up with 9 matches found for 'donaghedy'. It is possible to order copies from them, as I have ordered pages of the Donemana Relief Fund before. The following are from the National Archives of Ireland so I absolutely give them credit for this data. http://www.nationalarchives.ie/index.html http://www.nationalarchives.ie/services/public/obtaincopies.html I'm only posting a few that include names 'Famine Relief Commission Papers, 1845-1847' NA reference number: RLFC3/2/28/ Description: Rev James Gerahty, incumbent of Donaghedy and chairman of a sub committee of the Stewartstown Petty Sessions district committee, seeking financial assistance for a newly established committee, with abstract and draft reply, and clarifying his position as chairman of a sub committee. EH Caulfield, chairman of Stewartstown Petty Sessions district committee, writing in support of Rev Gerahty's application for assistance. Subscription list signed by Joseph Dudgeon, secretary of Stewartstown Petty Sessions district committee. Dudgeon subsequently returns a completed circular [NOT ENCLOSED] and requests that a grant be approved for the committee as soon as possible. Caulfield forwards an amended subscription list, with separate certificate, and notes that some subscriptions included on the first list had not actually been collected; with note: 'First grant of o222 to be cancelled. Warrant detained for certificate...'. Dudgeon finally enquiring if the donation of o88 sent to him is actually intended for the Ballyclog sub committee. 1. Re: [CoTyIre] Quarterman
    2. Bill Hazelton
    3. Hi Eleanor Below is an explanation in mining in Scotland. I've seen it used in meat-packing and may have been common in many occupations. The concept was even used by doctors in WWI to quantify a "cripples" ability to work and hence help determine what type of occupation they may be capable of doing. Bill Hazelton Memphis "Commercial Relations of the United States with Foreign Countries By United States Dept. of State, United States Bureau of Foreign Commerce(1854-1903" Google Books "When a boy of twelve years enters a coal-pit, he is attached to his father or some other man, and becomes what is known technically as a "quarter-man." The miner with whom he works is entitled to put out one-fourth more coal than if he wrought without assistance; and from the price he received for this extra quantity he pays the boy, whose duty it is to fill the coal into the "tubs" and convey it to the pit bottom. At fourteen the boy becomes a "half-man;" at sixteen, a "three-quarter-man;" and at eighteen' he assumes the title of miner, performs a man's work, and draws a man's pay. "when" the boy ranks as a " quarter-man," he usually receives one shilling per day ; when a" half-man," two shillings ; and when a " three-quarter-man," three shillings. These rates are, however, subject to variation according to the amount of wages received by the men. From this it will be seen that, when the miner's family includes two or three sons able to go into the pits, the total earnings must amount to a handsome sum" -Date: Tue, 6 Jan 2009 19:08:50 +1100 From: "Eleanor" <bryan@net2000.com.au> Subject: [CoTyIre] Quarterman Further to the message from Carol Condy Bennett, can anyone tell me what a Quarterman did. 1. [CoTyIre] LAUGHLINs of Gorticastle/Gorticashel (was Place names)
    2. Denis, There certainly were LAUGHLINs in Gorticastle and I believe there still are. My g-g-grandmother rented from them into the 1910s. Gorticastle is located north of the Owenkillew River and Rousky (Rousky is located on the B46 which is named Crockanboy Road in that part), and is just west of the townlands of Leckin and Crockatanty. The road that goes through it now is Gorticashel Road. See this link from an 1800s Strabane paper for a reference to a John L. of that townland. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cotyroneireland/newspaper/roadsessions.html Please contact me if you need further help. Recently, an article in a family bible listed an Isabella Laughlin, native of Gortecastel, County Tyrone, Ireland (article undated, probably 1920's). I have been unable to locate Gortecastle in County Tyrone. I did locate the name Gorte Ivalle and Castle ne Gaude near by and thought this as the possible location mentioned in this article. My question is: is there a place name Gortecastle if so its location. Also, what is the location of Gorte Ivalle and Castle ne Gaude? Any assistance regarding geographic locations of these places would be appreciated. Thank you, Denis in USA

    2. Jill Wilson
    3. Hello, I had previosly posted once before but was mostly interested in the Furlong side. I have had to give up on the Furlong side and move to Jones. I am looking for Charles and Jane Jones from Cappagh, County Tyrone. Patricia O'Shea was a kind helpful person (Thanks again Patricia) and she did some searching for me on the Jones in Tyrone but mentioned that she thought there may be some listers with Cappagh specific info so I was hoping to ask once more for any Cappagh listers assistance? If you have time to take a look in your records for Jane or Charles Jones I would be very greatful. :) Jane Jones b. 1810 County Tyrone d. 1885 Iowa County, Iowa, USA. Charles Jones b. 1797 Cappagh, County Tyrone, Ireland. Died 1867 Iowa County, Iowa, USA. Any help is appreciated, Jill Wilson

    3. Tom, Here's a start. Judging from this map of Kilskeery Parish: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tyrone/parishes/tl/kilskeery_tl.html Derrylea should be about 2 miles ESE of Trillick, which you can find at multimap.com [search for Trillick, United Kingdom]. After zooming in once, you'll find Moneygar and Rosnareen Roads [also from Kilskeery townlands], which must be just east of where Derrylea used to lie. 3. I ahven't looked at all the history of your search but are you aware of a Douglas Fullerton in Ottawa Ontario Canada who at one time was a Minister in the Canadian parliament. He was responsible for the creation of "the world's longest skating rink" here in Ottawa - it is actually the Rideau Canal and a tourist attraction. ----- Original Message ----- From: <cotyroneireland-request@rootsweb.com> To: <cotyroneireland@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 02, 2009 3:01 AM Subject: COTYRONEIRELAND Digest, Vol 4, Issue 1 > > > You are receiving this email because you subscribed to the > CoTyroneIreland-D mailing list. 3. I have been trying for a long time to get more information about the Hanna family in Derrylea, Tyrone. My Great Grandmother Sarah and her Father Thomas Hanna came from there to New York. I finally got in touch today with an American family member who had actually been there a few years ago. They told me a tale about their Ancestry search. They drove off at an interchange near where the town was supposed to be located and eventually found a small store and were told to check with the postmaster who turned out to be located in a part of the store. They asked about the family farm and were told to go back to the ChippyVan by the interchange. At first they did not understand what the postmaster was talking about, but finally got the message that there was a french fry vending van parked out there. It turned out that the ChippyVan driver was a relative and he gave directions. They found the house and while they were there the ChippyVan person showed up and said the closest relations were next door. No one was home. The Van owner asked for their email address and promised to get in touch. Unfortunately they did not get his address. They've never heard from him. The description of the village explains why I can never find the exact location on the map services online. They say there is nothing there but the little store and it's post office inside. Their visit was not a serious search for genealogy purposes; more of a hopeful side trip on a tour of the old sod. I wish they'd got some names and addresses. I suppose it is too much to hope that anyone on this list knows the ChippyVan vendor at the interchange near Derrylea not too far from Dungannon in County Tyrone? :^) This was a great opportunity missed! 1. [CoTyIre] Fletcher - Chambers- Stewart - Buchanan - Monteith - Walker connections
    2. Myrna Paquette
    3. To all, I hope somebody can help me with information on Fletchers in County Tyrone. Here is what I have found so far. John James Fletcher, my grandfather, emigrated from Dunnamanagh to Manitoba, Canada in 1911. I have obtained two documents from the GRO, his birth registration, 23 Oct 1871 at Tullyard, under the name of Fladger, son of Thomas Fladger and Hannah, formerly Stewart. In attendance at birth was Eliza Chambers. I obtained the marriage registration of his parents, Thomas Fletcher and Hannah Chambers, 15 Dec 1868, Church of England and Ireland, Donagheady, where Thomas' father is given as also Thomas. No names given for Hannah's parents. I would like to find the birth of Thomas Fletcher, which should be in 1844 according to the marriage certificate and that of Hannah Chambers which should be 1849. Emerald Ancestors doesn't have either. Also the GRO only has birth registrations from 1864 onwards. A mystery surrounds Hannah. I could not find a Hannah Stewart, but I did find a Hannah Chambers, born 1 August 1849 who was baptized at Donagheady on 27 Dec 1884 and her parents are given at that time as Eliza Chambers and Archibald Griffin. Since the birth year is correct for Hannah and since Eliza Chambers was present at Hannah's son's birth (John james), I think this might be the Hannah married to Thomas Fletcher, but no proof. Also, my grandfather, John james, always knew of his mother as Hannah Chambers, not Stewart. Since Hannah was only 18 at time of marriage to Thomas Fletcher, it seems unlikely that she would have been married before to a Stewart. I had the other children of this family from family records, but only year of birth, but have found all but the last one in the Emerald Ancestors database. Father Mother Birth 1. MaryJane(Civil) Thomas Fletcher Hannah Stewart 20 Sep 1869 Strabane District (she married a Buchanan) 2. John James(Civil) Thomas Fladger Hannah Stewart 23 Oct 1871 Tullyard, Dunnamanagh (on his own marriage, John James Fletcher to Catherine Allen in Manitoba, Canada, he gives his parents as Thomas Fletcher and Hannah Chambers.) On his birth certificate, Eliza Chambers is in attendance at his birth) 3. Rebecca(Civil) Thomas Fladger Annie Chambers 19 Jan 1874 Dunnamanagh Rebecca(Parish) Thomas Fletcher Hannah 11 Jan 1874 Donagheady 4. Elizabeth(Parish) Thomas Fletcher Hannah 25 Mar 1876 Donagheady (She married a Walker) Eliza (IGI) Thomas Fletcher Hannah Stewart 25 Mar 1876 Strabane District 5. Alexander (Parish) Thomas Fletcher Hannah 2 Feb 1878 Dunagheady (married and lived in Londonderry) 6. Thomas (Parish) Thomas Fletcher Hannah 29 Aug 1882 Donagheady (died in Teens from consumption) 7. Fanny (Parish) Thomas fletcher Hannah 12 Oct 1884 Donagheady (married Thomas Spence, emigrated to Canada 1927 but family returned to Ireland after a few years). 8. Margaret Jane(Parish) Thomas Fletcher Hannah 26 Aug 1886 Strabane, (married a Monteith) 9. A Boy Since I have hit a brick wall for now, if anyone (perhaps from the Buchanan, Walker, Monteith, Spence families) have any information on the Thomas fletcher - Hannah Stewart or Chambers births or their brothers and sisters, parents, etc. it would be really appreciated. Myrna Brandon-Paquette (granddaughter of John James Fletcher and Catherine Allen (she was also from Ireland (Artigarven) and I have a lot of information on her family).

    2. Hi Listers, ?I, too, am researching the Armstrong line who married into the Condy line. Would love to hear from Pam from England again, as I have new information on our possible common ancestors. The Armstrong family homesteaded across the road from the Condy family in Big Springs, NE, USA back in the 1880's. My mother stated we were not related -only by marriage, as Elizabeth Condy married John Armstrong in Ireland but they remained there for their lifetime. Anyone...researching the? James Simpson line, I found a Simpson on the Ship Ethiopia with the Condy and Wood family, but it was spelled with the "S" resembling an "O". line read as follows: James Simpson age 40 quarterman?????????????????????????? (?arrival 1876 USA) There was also a Lady Wilson.....on the same list Carol Condy-Bennett

    1. [CoTyIre] Welsh or Walsh or Welch / McGinnis / Robb
    2. Ronnie & Rob Welch
    3. Seeking fellow researchers to share information on two, possibly three, Welsh / Walsh / Welch brothers and their families. This is an annual update of personal research intent. 1. Stewart (Stuart) WELSH.  Unknown birth date in Ireland (ca early 1800s), married about 1834 at unknown location in Ireland, to Eliza(beth) CHAPMAN, born about 1816 at unknown location in Ireland, daughter of farmer John CHAPMAN.  Stewart & Eliza had one known reported child, Robert WELCH, born 2 Feb 1835 at unknown location in Ireland (family tradition has it in Northern Ireland, but brother Robert [below] is reported born in Co. Monaghan).  Stewart may be the Stewart WELSH in the 1833 & 1834 Tithe Applotment of Ardstraw Parish, Co. Tyrone (see brother, Robert's notes), but other researchers think not and that this Stewart belonged to another Welsh family in Ardstraw Parish.  My Stewart joined the British Army in Cavan, Co. Cavan (adjacent to Clones Parish, Co. Monaghan) during Sep 1840, and died while in military service in India during Nov 1845.  His name was spelled Stewart/Stuart and Welsh/Walsh in the army records.  His widow, Eliza (CHAPMAN) WALSH, remarried farmer James JACKSON on 4 Sep 1849 in Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh (also adjacent to Clones Parish, Co. Monaghan).  Son and mother immigrated to the USA separately, son Robert in 1849, and his mother sometime before 1852. 2. Isaac or Israel WELCH.  Family tradition has a possible brother Isaac WELCH, reported to be the middle brother.  Isaac born about 1808 in Ireland.  He was listed as Azier WELCH in the 1850 Livingston Co, New York census, living with his brother Robert below, and his nephew, Robert above. 3. Robert WELCH.  Reported to be born 10 Nov 1810 unknown location in Co. Monaghan.  Married at unknown location in Ireland to Nancy McGINNIS, born 8 Feb 1803 in Birrif (spelling unsure, possibly might be Beragh) or Omagh, Co. Tyrone.  Both these two locations are just down the road from Ardstraw (see above), Co. Tyrone.  This couple immigrated to the USA, probably in the first half of 1840, or perhaps 1839.  Three daughters, all reported born in Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., NY.  After the 1864 death of Nancy, Robert remarried his brother Stewart's widow, who was again a widower after re-marrying another person named Alfred Morrell.  Yes, 4 marriages for her.  I do not know what happened to the 2nd marriage to Mr. Jackson, but Eliza(beth) was in NY by 1852, and associated with the Morrell family then by the 1855 NY State Census. 4. Nancy McGINNIS. Born 8 Feb 1803 in Birrif (spelling unsure, possibly might be Beragh, Co. Tyrone), Ulster. Also reported to have been born in Omagh (unknown if parish or town), Co. Tyrone. Nancy was the daughter of Mr. (unknown 1st) McGinnis and Jane Robb. Died 14 Apr 1864 in Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., NY, USA. Religion. Unknown if Catholic or Protestant. By 1861 (about 20 years after immigration to the USA), the Welch/McGinnis family were members of an Episcopal Church in Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., NY, USA. Robert Welch, the nephew, married a Scottish girl & their 2nd child was christened 1869 in a Presbyterian Church in Tuscarora, Livingston Co., NY. Rob Robert E. Welch Arizona, USA celticop@cox.net

    3. Hello All Happy New Year to you all, and may the delights of life bring many ancestors your way! It has come to my attention that some of the e-mail contacts addresses on our community web-site are no longer good. It would be wonderful if any and all , who have submitted data to the site, check this so we can up-dated their e-mails. I have right now, a woman who is looking for someone who's address is null and void, and this is a terrible way to lose contact with potential cousins. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cotyroneireland/index.html Please e-mail me with any changes you may and I'll ensure that your new e-mail addresses are brought up to date. Thanks Alot and Cheers~ Teena

    2. Hi Sharon, Bearing in mind my comments about replies to Lists, it is interesting to hear that you did indeed have lots of replies so that mine, written just a few hours ago, was probably surplus to requirements. This is a real issue for me and others who like to help folks less fortunate than ourselves who do not know what is available and where to find it. Should we bother as others have probably replied with exactly the same info off List? This is why I believe, and these comments are directed not to you but more to the List Admin folk, that hitting reply to an email on a List ought to send that reply to the List as well as the Poster. Anyway, I wonder did anyone send you all the info that is now available on the online full text of the Griffiths Valuation. The Fullertons should be there somewhere, especially, Robert's father. Let me know if no-one has and I will get back to you - ON-List!! 3. Hi Denis I think this must be Gorticashel Upper or Gorticashel Lower. The Upper and lower are, as often as not, omitted locally. Log onto http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tyrone/parishes/tl/bodoney_lower_tl.html to see location.
