My ancesters Robert McCauley and his father and mother (also Robert) came from County Tyrone Ireland to Harrison County Ohio in 1830. Is there anyway I can go back in history to discover who was the father of the older Robert McCauley. Lorrie McCauley Wheeler 87201 Gundy Ridge Rd. Bowerston, OH Harrison County USA

Hello List, I am new here and would like some help if possible for my friend.. Her ancestor was JAMES MCNENY/MCNENIE or any of the above variations born about 1849 Co. Tyrone. He moved to New York around 1869 and married there in 1873, thereafter to Australia. I am trying to locate his Birth and Parents. The family was Church of Ireland. It is possible he came from the Drumquin area, Longfield, East. Would anyone know how I find his Birth/Baptism online.....I have looked in the Griffiths Valuations and found the surname McNeny in Drumquin, Longfield, East in 1860, which is steering me towards this area. Any help very much appreciated..... Robyn Australia
Hi Rob Checking in the Google Books search I found the following for you. I imagine you'll have to try and find a library for more. Seeking descendant of Rev. Andrew Welsh, minister of Ardstraw Parish, Co. Tyrone from 1733 until his death in 1781. Andrew is reported to have been born in Boveva, Dungiven Parish, Co. Derry. He married Jane Maxwell of Omagh, Co. Tyrone. Any information on Andrew or anyone related to him, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Rob Robert E. If I could add some comments. A number of years ago I sent for some certs from the GRO in Belfast and I am almost certain I used index numbers to do so which I had obtained in Dublin on an earlier visit. However I didnt order any marriage certs, mostly death certificates which cost £7 sterling each at the time. These were expensive because they are official certificates which are not necessary for family history purposes, to the best of my knowledge you cant order cheaper photo copies from Belfast. It was less expensive to order from Dublin. There have been some changes to GRO Ireland over the past few years. Firstly the GRO has moved from Joyce House in Dublin to Convent Road, Roscommon. The GRO still retains a Research Facility in Dublin, which is now situated at The Irish Life Centre, Lower Abbey Street. You can supply index numbers and order photo copies from there but you have to do so on a personal visit, you can't order photo copies from there by post, at least that is what I have been told. However they will post from there if you happen to be on a visit and they cant supply the copies at the time. You can order photo copies by post using the LDS numbers from The General Register Office, Government Offices, Convent Road, Roscommon, Co. Roscommon. The cost is 4 Euro each with index numbers supplied. This is not made clear on their website, also they dont have suitable forms to print out on their website. I have been told they will accept orders for photo copies on a sheet of paper, but I thought it better to design one on the computer similar to what was supplied on my last visit to Dublin, print it out and fill in the details required by hand. To order using index numbers they would require the following information, the Event, ie Birth, Death or marriage, the name of the person for which the details are required, the Registration District, the Year, the Quarter if there is one, the Volume No, the Page No and finally the Applicants Details, name and address of the person applying. Do not supply Film No, DigitalGS No or Image No that appear on the LDS site, they are likely meaningless to anyone other than the LDS. Ordering copies this way can be a bit of a lottery at times, you dont always get the cert copy you were expecting especially if the name is common. Even if its less common there could be say two people born in the same district around the same time that might fit, you mightnt know which one is yours and decide to order both but even then there are no guarantees. You can get some wonderful surprises too, but just thought I would mention the downside. Lena, unless you are looking for information from Armagh or the other counties of Northern Ireland, (Tyrone, Fermanagh, Derry/Londonderry, Antrim or Down) after 1921 all should be available from Roscommon. But you wont get Northern Ireland records from 1922 there. There may well be a problem with districts which are based on poor law unions in border counties though. For instance, I am researching families around the St. Johnston area of Donegal. Most of these events would have been recorded in either Strabane or Londonderry district. I seem to have difficulty with some marriages that should be there. But I am not complaining, teething problems I guess. If interested the website for GRO Ireland follows, they list themselves as Office of the Registrar General in the phonebook under Civil Registration Service. There are some things there that badly need updating. http://www.groireland.ie/ Hope I havent confused things further. I said that I would try to find out more about the details on the LDS Pilot site and if records could be ordered using the page and volume number. I was in Dublin last week and went into the Irish Life centre and completed the form for a marriage and death record using the Volume and page number and district that I picked up on the LDS pilot site. Within 10 minutes I had the copies in my hand. I had no idea of the Church where the marriage took place, just knew from LDS that the district was Dublin South. I also asked the genealogist in the National Archives who held the original registers and according to her the original volumes were divided between the North and the South, according to what was defined as North and south. However because of earlier divisions it may not be a "clean Cut" relating to today's borders and this would be why my family on the Armagh Border may be in Dublin and not Ireland. Hope this helps any of you applying for records. Can someone help me with a geographical question or set me straight if I have erred in relating the facts? In the Plantation of Ulster, 4 Hamilton brothers received grants of land in Ulster, as follows. All were sons of Claud Hamiltion, 1st Baron Paisley. 1. James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Avercorn : portion of Strabane (1000 acres) and Dunnalong (2000 acres) 2. Sir Claud Hamilton of Shawfield later Baldony: portion of Killeny (1000 acres) 3. Sir George Hamilton of Greenlaw and Roscrea: middle portion of Largie, alias Clochogenall, and Derrie-woone. All these grants are in Tyrone. The fourth brother received lands in Leitrim: 4. Sir Frederick Hamilton: Manor Hamilton A George Hamilton, kinsman to the above, also received land in Tyrone (Teadane, or modern Eden). This grant was transferred to Sir Claud Hamilton, the grantee at Killeny. Sir Claud's son is styled Sir William Hamilton of Elieston (variant spellings). Does there exist a map showing where these grants in Tyrone are situated? And where precisely was Elieston? Thank you for your attention. Roy

I would be pleased to hear from anyone who is researching the above names. At the present I am interested in a John Rutherford of Barrack street in Dungannon. Helen Rutherford Willcox
I neglected to put the names I am researching in the Subject line. Also since the family was Roman Catholic would it be worthwhile to begin writing to parishes in the County that would have been in existence around the time period I think they were married? Is that to large a task to begin to do? Tammy
Many thanks to Laurel,Clare L., and Margaret for their suggestions and help. Now I have a PLACE to search and not the whole of Co. Tyrone. One more question please. How would I go about starting a parish search?I know from death certs., obits. and baptisimal records that this family was Catholic. They were much involved in St. Anthony of Padua in Brooklyn,N.Y..Also, two of my John Martins' sisters mentioned in a bank record were , Ellen and Ann. I have death certs. for a Ellen McKenney and a Rosanna McKenny who gave their parents as Ellen Martin and James McKenney as Ellens' parents and Rosanna Martin and John McKenney as parents for Rosanna. I think the sister Ann could be the Rosanna Martin McKenney mentioned. Rosanna and Ellen are buried in the Martin family plot in Calvary Cemetery in N.Y..Informant on Rosannas' cert. was Mary Martin,cousin.. John Martin and Bridget Clark Martin had a daughter Mary.I have seen this name as McKenney, McKinney and McKenna. Anyone researching these folks? I am such a novice at this but learning as I go,with help. Helen, I have a brief record of the marriage of John Walker to Jane Callaghan in January 1827 but no other details. I have Walker relatives from that area and wonder if you have any information on this couple? Alice
Hello I am researching Margaret Farley (Farrley), who was born around 1827(?). She married James Harrington 1847 to 1853. By 1855 they had a son, William and were living in the U.S. in Illinois. Her death anouncement states she was from the county of Tyrone. Also any information on James would be great. It seems most Harringtons are from around County Cork. I have a "feeling" that James and Margaret were married when they left Ireland but am not certain. William was born in Pennsylvania, so was a young boy when they moved to Illinois. It appears they were of the Roman Catholic faith. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have been searching for a long time, but am always hopeful. Tammy.
Hi Helen You wrote '...We are looking for information on a Daniel Callahan, Rebecca Devenney Callahan and their 1 year old child Catherine Callahan.' I have not found a marriage for Daniel and Rebecca, but I have found the record of Catherine's birth. You will note the different spellings. It might be worth your while checking out different spellings too when looking for the ship's manifest. Date of Birth 8 Mar 1872 Name Cathrine CALLAGHAN Gender F Fathers Name Daniel CALLAGHAN Mothers Forenames Rebecca Mothers Maiden Name DEVANNY Church Dunnamanagh Civil District Strabane Sub District Donaghedy County Tyrone At least this confirms Co Tyrone as the county of origin and gives a specific part of Tyrone for your continued search. I hope this helps. >From BMD indexes, tough to decipher, I have this name, and looking for correct spelling. McAvinew McAveness McAvinel Anyone familiar with that name? Thanks. Loree Muldowney
Hi Helen, You could start with Irish birth registrations, to see if you can find a registration for Catherine Callahan; if you find the right certificate, you'll know the precise townland and parish in CoTyrone in which she was born -- which will hopefully also be your Callahan's home place. The LDS has just put up the Irish BMD indexes on their Lab site -- http://search.labs.familysearch.org/ (click on Europe, scroll down to Ireland). Poke around and see if you can find possibilities for Catherine's birth c. 1872. Then you can order a copy of the registration (either from the GRO in Dublin or the LDS in Salt Lake) and see if you can confirm the date and location of Catherine's birth. Just be aware that you might have to take the "born 1872" with a grain of salt, so you might have to search some years either side of that date to find the right registration. Hope that helps... Not specifically Tyrone, but... http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/flash/ has front pages of newspapers from around the world. In Ireland, unfortunately, it's only the Irish Times (Dublin) and the Irish Examiner (Cork), but you might have some fun poking around, anyway. Keep in mind it is only the front pages, and mostly the current day (there are some archives), and coverage is spotty in some parts of the world.... Still, it can be interesting to see what headlines are where -- and what papers are in an area you are researching. Hope that helps someone! Claire K seekay@comcast.net
