    3. I have just recently requested the $75 packet from the Civil War forward for my gggrandfather. I am REALLY hoping that it is actually him!! When I ordered the papers from NARA in Washington DC I was told that it could take three months or more to get the results, so it would appear that I have quite a wait. Wish I could answer your question..... 2. Maisie Egger
    3. Hello, Lanark and Co. Tyrone listers, This is not Lanark business, but I hope someone can help me with my continuing quest to document where my husband's great-grandfather actually came from in Ireland...we think perhaps Donaghmore, Co. Tyrone...and who his parents and any possible siblings might be. I wrote to the Military Service Records in Washington D.C., for a copy of Patrick Skiffington's military record, but before I part with more money, I wonder if anyone knows if a soldier's actual place of birth, names of parents (and maybe siblings) would be listed. The widow's pension records state only that he was from Ireland, with only her and those of her minor children's names listed. This is the fee structure. If I thought there was specific information about where he actually came from in Ireland and who his parents were, it would be more than worth it for me to pay the $25. ------------------------------------------------- Reproduction Fees (Effective October 1, 2007) $25 each for: Passenger arrival lists Federal census request Eastern Cherokee applications to the Court of Claims (that is a low blow to those people, surely!) Land entry records Pension documents packet (selected records) Bounty land warrant application files Military service files more than 75 years old. $75 for: Full pension file more than 75 years old (Civil War and after), up to and including 100 pages. $50 Full pension file (pre Civil War) Mail Order Policy: There is a minimum fee of $15.00 per order for reproductions that are sent by mail to the customer. PLEASE NOTE: The most efficient and fastest way to order records is online. To order records online, please go to our website: www.archives.gov, and select "Order Online". If you must order blank forms, the maximum number per request is TWO of each type of form as of October 1, 2007. ------------------------- As I have commented, IF I thought that Patrick Skiffington's parents and his actual place of birth in Ireland were listed, I'd pay the $25 in a flash, but what if the military records have the same old, same old dearth of this important information? If anyone has ever ordered U.S. Military records (Civil War era), I'd be interested to know if there is more than Name, Rank and Number! Maisie

    3. Malvern is next door to our home in West Goshen and here we are vacationing in Mexico, missing the excitement! You HAVE to follow this story backwards. I'll try to assemble it when I get home. Rough memory (I AM a senior). Watson saw a strange fog from his Immaculata University window (ahem! my daughter's alma mater and my drop-out spot). I think there may be a memorial at St. Agnes Cemetery, West Chester. There is a marker at Duffy's Cut. You can find your way to the spot, but I think it may involve a bit of trespassing on private property. (I'll have an answer to that when I get home.) It is truly a fascinating, sad story. If my old memory serves me, the Daily Local News, West Chester ran the story. It is an awesome tale and I thank you Claire, for sharing this update. I'll have a Mango Daiquairi on the beach to help me get over my disappointment with being so far removed from the action, especially since my roots are County Tyrone. 3. Interesting article. The Irish immigrants that were hired by Mr. Phillip Duffy were indeed brought in by him from the slums Donegal, Tyrone and Derry. It's unfortunate that they died of cholera which was picked up from the immigrant ships they sailed on, just as fifty thousand others did of all faiths. Watson's comments that some were shot, is a bating comment to feed his own prejudices. Those immigrants were in the care and custody of Duffy's road crew, fellow RC Irish. If anyone did the shooting, then it would have been by Duffy's crew themselves, and no one else. It is well known that of this group only some had cholera and they were quarantined. Duffy didn't have the money to provide the proper care, so they were literally disposed of, quitely and quickly. It was as simple as that. As for the "mass graves" comments by the "Watson brothers", that was the thing to do all across Europe and for immigrnats from Europe in America who had the "plaque". Any attempt to read into these events is a waste of time in the 21st century. Even in Canada there are many "mass graves" on the islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence for those coming off the "plague ships". Thowing off comments like "being shot" is irresponsible at best, especially when their fellow Irish did the deed themselves. I would simply leave the remains were they are, rather than creating a parade all the way back to 'Northern Ireland" for the benefit of the IRA and the Seinn Fein, who are equally akin to shooting people in the back. 3. Just in case anyone's interested in this family, here's a summary of a one-page story that was published by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania in their Jan. 22, 2009 "History Hits" email newsletter -- complete with illustrations. If you want full details / a copy of the article, contact them directly. Here's my summary of their article: The site of HSP (at 13th and Locust Sts. in Philadelphia) was previously the home of Gen. Robert Patterson and a gathering spot for Andrew Jackson, James Polk, U.S. Grant, and former officers from the Union and Confederate armies during the US Civil War. Robert Patterson was born 1792 in Cappagh, Co Tyrone, married Sarah Ann Engle of Germantown (now part of Philadelphia) in 1817, and had 11 children (including Brig. Gen. Francis Engle Patterson, who died in 1862). He died Aug. 7, 1881 and his pallbearers included Generals Grant, Sherman, Porter, and Hancock. (HSP moved to the site in 1883). He had an impressive list of credentials and accomplishments. Anyone interested in the Patterson family from Cappagh, or military history, or Tyrone folks who made a mark in their adopted countries, might be interested in this article. Here's Wikipedia's entry on him -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Patterson . Enjoy! Claire K seekay@comcast.net

    1. Re: [CoTyIre] Transcribing Format
    2. Tammy Mitchell
    3. Dear Susan & other list members who are thinking of transcribing, When I create the web page from the documents you send in, I basically cut and paste your content into a pre-designed template. Font is not important, the site template handles what the font will look like, not the font in the document. This includes style, size and effects ie, bold or italic. What is important is your formatting, regarding titles and paragraphs. As long as you have those set up the way you want them, I will maintain that type of formating. Here are some guidelines: - I don't read what is sent to me, so please spell check. - If you want to draw attention to a surname, put it in capitals, not bold. (the bolding will be lost upon conversion to the template) - When possible, include who transcribed the document (your credit) in the document, not just on the email (sometimes the two get separated). -If you didn't actually transcribe a document yourself, but you have permission to send in something that someone else has done. Please ask permission to send it to us for posting on the site. In cases like this your credit should be something like: Transcribed by 'other person', submitted with permission by 'me'. - If your document contains tables please send it in .doc or .rtf format, and remember when you save it to include the .rtf at the end of the file name ie: 'save as' filename.rtf or filname.doc. Example page (of a tabled document): http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cotyroneireland/births/coagh.html - If your document is best shown as a list, you can just type it into an email and send it to me that way. Example page (of a list document): http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cotyroneireland/tithe/tithe_Clogher.html I hope this takes some of the mystery regarding transcription. Thanks for generating this comment Susan. cheers Tammy - Cwllmsgrpnc@aol.com wrote: > Dear Tammy, > > Teena forwarded your email address so I could contact you for directions > on formatting the transcriptions for Donaghendry Old Graveyard. 2. Suggestion -- If you haven't already - take a look at the Householder's Index for Co. Tyrone which indexes the surnames of the heads of household for the Tithe Applotment of the 1820s and Griffith's Valuation of the 1850s. You may find that the two surnames are present in the same civil parish. For the Tithe, you may find reference to your Edward or his father. The 'Householder's Index' is done by county, divided into baronies, parishes, townlands and has been filmed by the LDS. The LDS- film numbers:Tyrone, Waterford, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow LDS film # 0919007. -----Original Message----- From: Gary Smith <adslg6as@tpg.com.au> To: COTYRONEIRELAND@rootsweb.com Sent: Sun, 22 Mar 2009 4:57 pm Subject: [CoTyIre] Furey/Fury Hi All Edward FURY came to Australia on the ADAM LODGE . If need further info check NSW Public Records Office site and follow prompts for convicts. Being a convict and having her details and name of ship there would be much more recorded for her if checked. Although her age would differ somewhat to the 20 yrs at marriage in 1839 I am presuming this could be correct Jane Shaw. At least worth checking her details. It can't be sent by a post to the Tyrone List but can be sent privately if you want a copy. We now have over 140 Kincaids of various spellings in the Kincaid Surname DNA project. We have men from 8 countries around the world, 9 different spellings of Kincaid and 8 distinct Kincaid lines that differ from each other. If you or others want more information about the project, go to www.familytreedna.com/public/kincaid/default.aspx We really need more Kincaid men from N.
