    3. Hello to everyone This is my first attempt at searching Co Tyrone for my GGGGrandparents John O'Neil, Peter McGuire and Rosina Monaghan. I was told that Co Tyrone was a good place to look for these particular names. Are these surnames usually found in this area? Any help would be wonderful. I've been away for quite some time (due to illness) and I've not had much luck in my research. Thank You Mary Clancy Buffalo, NY USA

    2. Pat, If it's any help, both McKENNA and BRADLEY are names found in Co. Tyrone. The McKENNA surname generally hails from the southern part of the county - Diocese of Clogher. You may want to research her siblings who may have remained in the area. -----Original Message----- From: Patricia Coogan <patmikecoogan@comcast.net> To: COTYRONEIRELAND@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, Jul 3, 2009 7:57 am Subject: [CoTyIre] Susan McKenna I just recently found that my ancestor Susan McKenna was from County Tyrone, Ireland and not County Kilkenny as had been family folklore. She was born in 1827 in Tyrone, Ireland. She immigrated to England at some point and lived her life there. She married Michael Bradley but I don't know if that happened in Ireland or England. Any advice from other McKenna's on which way to go from here? Thank you for any advice you can offer. Pat Connor Coogan

    1. [CoTyIre] William Elliott - Mary Pleasants 1857
    2. Carell
    3. In 1857 THOMAS BATES, his wife MARTHA ELLIOTT and five children emigrated to Moreton Bay, Australia on the "Mary Pleasants" and settled in what is now known as Queensland around the Ipswich Area, close to Brisbane. Dorothy, My G/Grandparents William and Rebecca Elliott from Makenny Tyrone, also immigrated on the ship "Mary Pleasants" in 1857. They too settled in Ipswich, but only for two years before re- locating to the Gerringong area of NSW. My William and Rebecca Elliott's names are listed together with your Thomas and Martha Bates, three down from the top on a long list of 208 passengers,in a thank you letter to the Captain and Crew. I've always wondered if there could have been a Elliott family connection, as I have only been able to take my Elliott family back to 1819, in Irvinestown Fermanagh. Where they lived before that date is unknown. The Omagh area is only about 12 or 14 miles east of Irvinestown. My William Elliott was born in 1832, s/of William born C.1797. This 1797 William's father was possibly a Alexander or Thomas Elliott, who was deceased when the 1821 census was recorded, but William's mother was Elizabeth b. 1768. Could your William Elliott f/of Martha, have been a cousin to my 1797 William Elliott?? Was it just a coincidence that the Bates and Elliott names were listed together on the Mary Pleasants? The list was not alphabetical. Were they all travelling together or were they drawn together because of the Elliott name?? Going by death certificates THOMAS BATES would have been born about 1817 and MARTHA about 1826. They would have married about 1843 going by birth of first child. Have you tried to obtain their C.1843 marriage certificate? Ballynatty, Psh. of Drumragh where two of the children were baptised, is close to Rylands Drumragh where a Robert Bates is listed (possibly Thomas' brother??) in the Griffiths Val. Robert is listed in a house only, his L/L was James White, whose L/L was Sir James M. Strong/e. Maybe this Robert Bates was a servant in the "big house" to Sir James???? Regards, Carole Elliott.

    1. [CoTyIre] BATES, SIMPSON and ELLIOTT Families in Tyrone
    2. Dorothy Hartley
    3. Hello Fellow Listers In December 2002 I posted to this list. However, since then my email address has changed and I have found a little more information so I am now reposting my family hoping someone may be able to help me find my Ancestors in Ireland. In 1857 THOMAS BATES, his wife MARTHA ELLIOTT and five children emigrated to Moreton Bay, Australia on the "Mary Pleasants" and settled in what is now known as Queensland around the Ipswich Area, close to Brisbane. The ship's records show that both THOMAS and MARTHA came from Tyrone. THOMAS said his parents were ROBERT BATES and MARY SIMPSON. MARTHA said her parents were WILLIAM ELLIOTT and BETTY (no surname given unfortunately). On death certificates for both THOMAS and MARTHA they show that they were both supposed to be born in OMAGH and married there. As yet have no confirmation of this as haven't been able to find birth certificates or date of marriage. Going by death certificate THOMAS would have been born about 1817 and MARTHA about 1826. They would have married about 1843 going by birth of first child. The children accompanying their parents to Australia were Sarah 12, Mary Ann 11, William 7, Matilda 4 and Margaret an infant under 1. After employing a researcher in Belfast, it was found that two of the children were baptised in the1st Presbyterian Church in Ballynahatty, Sarah on 13 Mar 1844 and Matilda on 25 January 1853, daughters of Thomas Bates and Martha Elliott. Any help would be greatly appreciated Dorothy in Cairns, Queensland, Australia

    2. Carell
    3. I have a unwanted death certificate, dated July 31st 1921 at Numulgi/Bexhill NSW, for Alexander Elliott son of William, born 1847 Co.Tyrone. The certificate states that in 1921, Alexander had been in the colony of NSW for 41 years, which indicates he emigrated in 1880 when 33 years old. No record of Alexander Elliott's arrival has been found. In 1883 Alexander married a Mary Chick in Sutton Forrest NSW. Alexander and Mary produced 7 sons and five daughters between 1884 and 1901. Is anyone searching for a lost Alexander Elliott in Co. Tyrone or researching him in Numulgi/Bexhill NSW? Thanks, Carole Elliott, also researching a Alexander Elliott, son of William.
