Thanks for you help Claire. I've checked the Covenant with some success. The Meehan book you mentioned sounds great, unfortunately copies lie far away from Texas. I'm still hoping some kind soul may do a lookup in the 1901 census for : Robert and Barbara Armstrong Campbell Hugh and Margaret Campbell Armstrong We hope one day to locate parents of each of those listed in my original e-mail to determine their relationship to our family. I have just found this year 2000 message from Bernard Hagan, Brisbane Australia. I have tried to contact Bernard but the e-mail address below is no longer valid. The ELLIOTTS - Mary (my great great grandmother) come from one of three townlands called "Drumduff" in County Fremanagh in the Parishes of Derryvullan, Killesher or Drumkeeran. I don't know which. The Drumduff in Derryvullan was the only townland with an Andrew ELLIOTT (her father) in the Griffiths Valuations of 1862 whilst the others had ELLIOTT's with different Christian names or had ELLIOTT's (including one Andy) in other townlands within the parish. I hope that someone on this or the Fermanagh list, may be able to establish a link to this family. Regards Bernard Hagan

Good morning, George, The combination Skiffington-Kelly caught my eye...because.... I cannot trace my husband's great-grandfather's beginnings, shall we say. PATRICK SKIFFINGTON was born around 1815, PERHAPS in Donaghmore, Co. Tyrone. PERHAPS he is the same Pat. Skiffington who sailed on the Jane Walker in 1834. The first documentation we have of him is his marriage to BRIDGET KELLY (b. Ireland, 1814) in The Basilica of the Blessed Assumption, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, in 1840. They had at least five children, christened in St. Peter's R.C. Church, Baltimore. Md. In 1863, during the American Civil War, he fought with a Baltimore Infantry regiment, where he received injuries when he fell on his bayonet and died six months later at his home in Baltimore. This is a shorthand version, and limited narration, of what we know about PATRICK SKIFFINGTON. If you have anything that might help us to pinpoint him more closely to your Skiffingtons (and even Bridget Kelly), I would be so appreciative as we have been on the hunt for him for 40 years now, having gone up hill and down dale in trying to find his roots, shall we say. Hello Kay. A few thoughts to run past you. Firstly, the Strabane BDM Registration District, and the Strabane Poor Law Union, although primarily based in County Tyrone, took/takes? in parts of County Donegal also; AND from stuff which I found from a google search for Strabane Poor Law Union, also seems to take in part of County Londonderry! (quite a mixture there). So this MIGHT explain why you have County Donegal, but also Strabane in your records for the same person. Here is link to the web-site of the wonderfully knowledgeable and helpful Jane LYONS, which shows some of that: http://www.from-ireland.net/don/civ.htm And whilst at it, here is a link to the Strabane Historical Society's web-site; although the few items in there might not be too helpful to you; although the item on Strabane in the 1840s might also provide some locality details for you: http://www.strabanehistorysociety.com/local_research_index.htm And this link to the Donegal County Council about its Poor Law archives is fascinating in many respects. I could not find their having holdings of the Strabane Poor Law records -- which I would expect might instead be in PRONI (the Public Record Office of/for Northern Ireland). http://www.donegalcoco.ie/services/communityculturalenterprise/Archives+Service/archivescollection.htm (and BTW, I had a laugh at the 'coco' name in this link above; seemingly for COunty COuncil. Perhaps that is normal in Ireland, but it made me think of a monkey! haha) SECONDLY: Research in Oz. Are you familiar with Oz research? If not, then I would suggest a few of the following, for trying to locate the immigration records for your people. 1. Queensland state archives in Brisbane. http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/indexes.asp and their guides and information leaflets etc.: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/research/briefguides.asp 2. The NSW State Records' online records; http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online as well as their information leaflets on Immigration and Shipping records. http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/guides-and-finding-aids/archives-in-brief 3. The Society of Australian genealogists' web-site, for their information leaflets, http://www.sag.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=44 and perhaps some other online records. http://www.sag.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=56&Itemid=44 4. The microfiche indexes issued by Pastkeys, to the Immigration Deposit Journals. These are indexed by the surname of the Immigrant, and also by the surname of the 'depositor' in Oz who paid for their passage out. If you find any references of interest in there; then you will need to go to the microfilm records for the various shipping arrivals -- which are in the NSW State Records' series called the ARK -- formerly called the GRK (Genealogical Research Kit); which will be in the Queensland State Library in Brisbane (perhaps in the Oxley Library there); and I expect that many local libraries, historical, and family history societies may also have copies. 31 January 1854, Killeeshil RC church, John Skiffington married Mary Kelly. The witnesses were Matilda Kelly and William McKenna. They had 7 children. The oldest daughter, Margaret stayed in Killeeshil and married a Peter Kelly. Another daughter, Bridget, stayed in Killeeshil and never married. In the 1901 Census she was still living with her parents in Ballynahaye. Another daughter, Anne Jane (Jennie) stayed in Killeeshil and married James McCaughey. There was also a son John in Killeeshil. I know nothing much about him. The other Skiffington children (Mary, Hugh, Michael) went to Philadelphia. My interest is in Mary Kelly, the mother of this family and my 2nd great-grandmother. There were at least 10 Mary Kelly's born between 1826 and 1833 in Killeeshil. If anyone has any clue to indicate who this Mary Kelly might be, I would appreciate the help. George
Patricia, Thank you for the information about Michael Bradley. I appreciate your help. I found what looks like might be the marriage record of Michael Bradley to Susan McKenna in Co Durham England in 1850. I have ordered it online and hope it is the right one. Hopefully that will tell me at least their father's names. Thanks again. Pat Connor Coogan
Hi I have recently discovered that my great grandmother Ellen Hastie (nee Beattie) was born in Strabane, Donegal in 1867. I have been told that this would have been part of County Tyrone, not Donegal as I had previously thought. Ellen's parents were Edward Beattie (farmer) and Grace McCarthy. Ellen travelled to Australia and married my great grandfather James Hastie on 13 February, 1889 at West End, Brisbane. The ceremony was performed by a Presbyterian minister. I believe that Ellen may have been a domestic servant. I have had no luck in finding any information about Ellen's parents and hope that someone may be able to assist or advise me as to how best to do this. Kind regards Kay Topping
Hi I recently found a reference to 1740 Census of Protestant House Keeper in Ulster. I am curious to learn if the name VOGAN appears on this list. Our Vogan family sailed for America in the early 1740's. Our family reunion is held next month. If you have access to this information, and the time to search for this family name, I would be most grateful. Thank you. Ronda

John/William was born August 6, 1832 in County Tyrone. I don't know if they were Catholic or not and don't really know where to turn. Any suggestions??? Thanks, Maxine

Hi There were many Monaghans in Dunamore, Kildress parish, near Cookstown on the road towards Omagh. They were Catholics and some emigrated to the iron producing towns of north east England – Newcastle, Consett, Tow Law, Witton Park and Port Clarence. Tyrone. The McKENNA surname generally hails from the southern part of the county - Diocese of Clogher. You may want to research her siblings who may have remained in the area. -----Original Message----- From: Patricia Coogan <patmikecoogan@comcast.net> To: COTYRONEIRELAND@rootsweb.com Sent: Fri, Jul 3, 2009 7:57 am Subject: [CoTyIre] Susan McKenna I just recently found that my ancestor Susan McKenna was from County Tyrone, Ireland and not County Kilkenny as had been family folklore. She was born in 1827 in Tyrone, Ireland. She immigrated to England at some point and lived her life there. She married Michael Bradley but I don't know if that happened in Ireland or England. Any advice from other McKenna's on which way to go from here? Thank you for any advice you can offer.
