    3. Hello Bill. Sadly, I do not have any knowledge to be able to answer any of your questions. Instead, I offer these few thoughts. 1. I googled for Newtownstewart archives 2. Lots of hits. 3. One of them led me to this URL: http://www.welbni.org/ 4. On the bottom left-hand corner is an e-mail address. 5. Try writing to ask them. Now for explanation. It seems that this web-page is for both school education and ALSO LIBRARY purposes, but I may have misunderstood them. e-mail and ask them anyway. Next thought: On the Fermanagh lists we used to have a most wonderful local council employee from the Town Hall at Enniskillen, named Frank(ie) ROOFE. He had a LOT of local Fermanagh records there at the Town Hall. I don't know how far back they went though. So my thought is that Perhaps in Newtownstewart itself, or perhaps in Omagh, or maybe in Strabane -- sorry to not know such things -- there might be one or more of the following which might be able to help you: a: a Town Hall with similar archives. b: a town/city Library with a knowledgeable and interested Local Studies Librarian. c: Local Archives held maybe in a local library, etc. Perhaps you might try googling for any of the above? Sorry to be so vague, but hope that you might be able to derive something helpful from it. Kind regards: Ray in oz. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Hazelton" <bhazelto@comcast.net> > According to the book "A GENEALOGY OF Hazelton and Stygles Families", > Gateway Press,Inc. 3. Hello Bill, Newtownstewart is a "town" of about 4 streets. It may have a small local library but it does not have an archive . George Hazelton has to be refering to a Church register of baptism. That would have been the most likely {and possibly only} source of his record of "birth" best regards and good hunting. 3. After researching for years and having yet to link my Hazelton line with the likely Killyman Hazeltons, I am retracing my research. According to the book "A GENEALOGY OF Hazelton and Stygles Families", Gateway Press,Inc. Baltimore,MD,USA by George F. Hazelton, he refers to my Great-Grandfather's birth as follows: " ...discovery in the archives of the town of Newtownstewart, County Tyrone of the record of the 1841 birth of William, son of James and Elizabeth." He later gives his birth as 22 July 1841. While the family may have been transient on their way to Londonderry for eventual emigration to Nova Scotia (mid 1840's), he claims their daughter Margaret was also born there in 1844. My questions are: 1. Why would a birth be recorded in a town archive in the 1840's? 2. Was this common? 3. Did/Does a Newtownstewart town archive exist? 4. If so, where might it be? 5 How would I access it? Thanks for any suggestions or comments. Bill Hazelton Memphis

    3. Tia Searching the Irish Family History Foundation website, I don't see Claudius himself, but possibly some clues: Civil marriages in the Omagh (RD) Claud McCutcheon 1864 Claude McCutcheon 1880 Births with father of Claude: CASTLEDERG (RD) Rebecca Jane 1881 William 1882 Additionally, I saw a posting from possibly one of your researchers looking for a James b.1822 near Omagh as a son of Claudius and Eleanor? This may be a relative to that family DRUMRAGH (CI) in Omagh Marriage McCutcheon Oliver 1822 His children? baptisms: McCutcheon James 1824 McCutcheon George 1826 McCutcheon Catherine 1829 McCutcheon William 1831 McCutcheon Thomas 1840 Rebecca Jane and William are both found multiple times in DRUMAGH (CI) births. 3. Mac, There are no hits in any of the UHF databases for Claudius McCutcheon. Here's what I found re the McCutcheon surname (any first name): Matheson's 1890 Special Report (Robert R. Matheson's Special Report on Surnames in Ireland; statistical report based on births registered in 1890) shows 27 hits for McCutcheon, 24 of them in Ulster (1 in Leinster, 2 in Munster); the Ulster hits are mostly in Tyrone, Antrim, and Down. No more detailed info is available from the online database. The 1796 Flaxgrowers List shows 5 McCuthceons in Tyrone: 1 John in Clogherny, 2 Johns in Cappagh, 1 Robert in Cappagh, and 1 William in Urney. Derry Diocese Will Books, 1612-1857, shows two Robert McCutcheons, both in Cloindermot parish, Derry (1764 in Lismacarol and 1684 in Fincarne). Will Calendars, 1878-1900 shows 25 McCutcheons, only 1 in Tyrone: Andrew 4/11/89, probate 1890. There are 68 McCutcheon entries in the Irish Gravestone Inscriptions Index. There were miscellaneous other (very few) hits, which I've excluded because of location or date. Free on the UHF site are the Signposting index (BMD) for Antrim and Down, and Members' Interests (showing who else is researching McCutcheons). Hope there's something helpful in there. 2. Hi Billie I looked at original ship log on Ancestry...and I in "my" opinion since William was on end of first page but others followed immediately AFTER him on folowing page....if NOT children then I would assume definite relatives. In other words it seems MORE then logical. The Elliott name is also found in Fermanagh. It is not a name I myself am researching but I thought I would just comment. Hope you do not mind. I also saw there were many William Elliotts on the Index to Griffiths..from 1848-1864, in Tyrone and other counties. Sue in NY In a message dated 8/18/2009 2:11:57 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, bjleclerc@sbcglobal.net writes: On May 14, 1853 the ship AMERICA arrived in NY carrying a William ELLIOTT with supposed family members; Lucy ELLIOTT, 18, Margaret, 15 and Charles, 20. All 4 Elliott's declared their home as Ireland. William isn't accompanied by a wife so he may have been widowed. However, nothing on the ship list confirms them to be a father-children family unit. I'm simply supposing. Not knowing their Irish county of origin has made it impossible to find any information about them, if indeed William is father to the 3 young people in his company. And not having a name for William's supposed first wife, probable mother to these 3 adult children with him, complicates my search even further. Coincidentally, on an earlier passenger page, I discovered a Joseph ELLIOTT, age 27, who gives his home country as England....perhaps a scribe's error. I don't know if there is a connection between these separate ELLIOTT entries. I've discovered that this ELLIOTT family unit spent a couple years in New York before traveling west to Iowa. While living in NY William had married a Jane B. (BURGESS- married or maiden name?) a young woman of 28, an 1839 immigrant from Ireland. After their move to Iowa I have been able to locate these Elliott's in the 1856, 1860, 1880, & 1900 Iowa Census and follow some of them and their growing families. Lucinda ELLIOTT was married to Christopher BETTS/BETZ in 1859, by a Presbyterian minister in Iowa. They were my great grandparents. Where did she live before leaving Ireland?
