    2. Daryl Gilmore
    3. I have never seen my posting on the list before, so am trying again. My ancestors were James and Matilda (Martha) Gilmore (Gilmour ?)from Knockaraven or Omagh, Co. Tyrone. James was born abt 1803 and died in Omagh abt 1846 as far as we know. Matilda (Martha) was born 1807 and emigrated to America in 1847 with at least six of their nine children. Children were James, Ann, John, Eliza, William, Catherine, Isebelle,Francis, and Thomas I was able to find birth and baptism records for the Dromore Presbyterian church for the last three children, but nothing else. Does anyone have other info or clues for me? I would love to find James burial site. He was not buried in the little church at Dromore. Thanks so much for any help. Kathy Gilmore

    2. Shirley Burnside
    3. I haven't seen anything come up from anyone else either searching for or knowing something about the Burnside/Hogg family that are our ancestors. William Burnside married Margaret Hogg in the area of County Tyrone so far as we know. Their children John (or Joseph), Robert, Margaret and James were born in County Tyrone according to family stories. William had two brothers who also came to the USA, probably somewhere between 1812 and 1825 as nearly as I can figure out. His brothers, Robert (the older of the three) and Joseph (the younger of the three) settled in Pennsylvania. Robert stayed in the Philadephia area. William and Margaret eventually ended up in Londonderry, Ohio and are buried there under a large marble slab, supposedly imported from Ireland according to a local Londonderry source who showed us around what's left of the little town. We think they were most likely Presbyterian, with their ancestry going back to Scotland, perhaps. Please let me know if you have any information that might help make some connection there where I can find records. I know there are a few that got the Flax Growers honor-thinking perhaps the Robert Burnside there might be an ancestor since we also have Roberts (but doesn't everybody!!!) 3. Listers should be warned that many 19th century BMD records are non- existent, having been destroyed in a 1922 fire at the records office during "the troubles" Make sure you know the name of the townland not just the county before you contact any of the research companies. Otherwise you will start on an expensive needle in a haystack search. My ancestors were married mid to late 1830s in Clogher and started a family, however after spending a lot of money I found out that records for that time period do not exist. A friend of mine from Ottawa researching his ancestors went to N. Ireland with Ontario land deeds and other documents dating back to 1835. The Irish researcher jokingly suggested that Canadian records were more complete than what he had to work with. And old Irish church records if located can be daunting since some priests (depending on their education) made BMD entries combining Latin, English and Gaelic. Good luck JIM On 2-Nov-09, at 3:01 AM, cotyroneireland-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > You are receiving this email because you subscribed to the > CoTyroneIreland-D mailing list. 3. Unfortunately for me, Irish World/IFHF's Tyrone coverage is mostly Catholic parishes; some Presbyterian Church records and I think all of four COI parishes, so unless your ancestry in that area is Catholic, you won't find much. My Catholics are in Donegal, not Tyrone, unfortunately. Irish World not added more online in years. I check occasionally, same list. I had hoped that with things coming online with the IFHF, we'd see more parishes/religions, but I guess it's not happening. It could be worse. Their coverage for Fermanagh is practically non-existant. Other nearby places like Monaghan County doesn't even have a center. Ah, the joys of Irish research. I do like the UHF coverage and as a member, I've got my money's worth for the Antrim/Down records. My ancestry is in Tyrone, Donegal, Antrim, Monaghan, Fermanagh and I have two families for which I've never got beyond the dreaded "N. Ireland" broad description. The families are from at least three different religions. Things are improving, slowly. I hope that more becomes available over time. I just might break down those brick walls! It would be nice if I do so before I kick the bucket. :p Bonz -----Original Message----- From: cotyroneireland-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cotyroneireland-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Claire K Sent: Sunday, November 01, 2009 8:41 AM To: Joan Cc: COTYRONEIRELAND@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CoTyIre] Ulster Historical Foundation Like you, most of my folks are in Tyrone (the rest in Donegal), and I have noticed that the UHF is getting more Tyrone material, but it's nowhere near the volume of what they have for Antrim and Down. 3. The UHF is, among other things, the official (government-appointed) research center for Cos. Antrim and Down, so, yes, they have more Antrim / Down records than anything else. They do, however, collect records from all over Ireland (not just Northern Ireland) and have some resources that are country-wide (Flaxgrowers List, Calendar of Wills, etc.). They also do research for a fee in both the Dublin and Belfast depositories, organize seminars / conferences, publish journals, etc. I've been a happy member of their Guild for years, but not primarily for their online databases (most of which I've either exhausted or don't apply to my research interests). Like you, most of my folks are in Tyrone (the rest in Donegal), and I have noticed that the UHF is getting more Tyrone material, but it's nowhere near the volume of what they have for Antrim and Down. They will never have Tyrone BMD / parish registers, because the county center for Tyrone (Irish World, formerly Heritage World) (and the affiliated Irish Family History Foundation site) has those. The UHF comes annually to the US on a lecture tour (in different parts of the country each time), so it's worth going to see them if they're ever in traveling distance of you (or in a location you'd like to visit). I highly recommend them, but want to clarify -- you wouldn't be subscribing to a site (like you do with Ancestry), you'd be joining a society (in their case, their affiliated Guild) that has a Members Only section of the site as one member benefit (and lots of other member benefits). 3. Hi Folks, What do you folks think of the Ulster Historical Foundation? I notice that if I become a member, I have access to many records, but mainly in a few counties. (Down and Antrim if I remember correctly?) All that I have found so far on my family members has been in County Tyrone, but I see on a map that Down and Antrim are pretty close. Has anyone purchased a membership to this site? What do you think? Thanks, Joan Researching BOND, MEAGHER and PELLERIN in Port Felix, Nova Scotia. Researching LAFORET in Williamsburg NY and E. 3. Hello once more, Joan. Another thought prompted by the part of your posting below which I have left intact. Google for "naming pattern" Ireland >From the results, you will see how sons and daughters were named from OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS, by those who followed the naming pattern. Accordingly, a father named Arthur who had several sons, would expect that each of his sons would name their eldest son "Arthur" after him. Now, if you think that this might have been done a few generations earlier with a paternal ancestor named Arthur, you might be able to see how a LOT of distantly related people could have the same -- even relatively otherwise uncommon -- forename. THIS is one of the big issues in Irish genealogy; and shows how we have to tread VERY CAREFULLY whenever we feel tempted to make an ASSUMPTION about relationships, merely because we have enountered someone of the same forename. (And in fact that holds true for our genealogical research world-wide, also.) HTH some more. Ray in oz ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joan" <acadianjoan@yahoo.com> ... I'm a bit confused however. It appears that there must have been two Arthur Connollys in Cty Tyrone at the same time. From what I hear Arthur is an unusual name for this place and time. So I'm surprised to find two of them. You don't suppose that an error was made in the name of the mother on the record do you? Have you guys found errors in these records before? I recently posted another baptism, Mary Connolly, with the same parents, Arthur and Rose. She was baptised 25 Jul 1855. I have my Arthur and Sarah in Canada on the 1871 census with a Mary who was born in Ireland. Her age is listed as 12 which puts her birth at 1859. I know - it's a stretch to think that Mary born in 1855 is the same Mary who was in Canada in 1871. But what do you think? ...
