Pat, was the will probate for the Benjamin Shepperd online, or did you have to go to your local FS centre and search through the film there? Thanks Pat, Carole Elliott. ps When I did a google search for Tamnyinnan townland, google asked 'Did you mean: Damn It Tyrone'!! >

    2. Hi Pat, This is what you found on the LDS website: Name: Sheppard Event Type: Probate Event Date: 1853 Event Place: Tyrone, Ireland Document Number: 051 Volume Number: 032 Volume Date Range: Nov-Dec 1854 Property Name: Parish: Electoral Division: Barony: County: Tyrone Alternate Event Place: Tamnylennan This is from an INDEX to wills; it is NOT the will itself. Basically, most wills before 1858 have NOT survived. Have a look at this: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/wills-testamenta ry-records/ It certainly won't be at PRONI which is why you cannot find it. Tamnylennan is here: http://www.cotyroneireland.com/townlands/images/DonaghenryDrumglassTullynisk an.pdf This Sheppard person may have been the last Sheppard in Tamnylennan are there are no Sheppards in the 1859 Griffiths Valuation in Tamnylennan. In fact, there are none in the entire Parish of Donaghenry. Sadly, the TAB for Donaghenry is not online in any of the obvious places. 2. Hi Marion, William et al, I spent quite some time earlier this year researching the Adams family of Ballyfatten and Peacockbank. They married into the Boaks. I have copied and pasted some of the information I collected from the tree I produced and apologise for anything being repeated. http://bbs.mayo-ireland.ie/[email protected]@.3b9dfb46 BOAK, Aaron? or "Wron"? (b. 1800+/-) Two sons: William (b. before 1827) & Robert (b. 1827). Owned farm at PEACOCK BANK. Robert grad. Univ of Glasgow 1848, ordained Missionary, Presby. of Strabane, 1852, emigrated to US 1852, changed name to Boag. William remained in Co. Tyrone, married ADAMS,(Jane?), lost Peacock Bank farm and later (late 1800's) living on son-in-law's (Adams) farm at BALLYFATTEN. Other contemporary relations: James Boak, John Boak. I am stuck at this point with only information above; any information regarding BOAK family members/relationships circa 1850 or earlier would be greatly appreciated. (The above may be wrong): 58-320 12-Nov-58 On the 3rd inst., in Urney Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. John McConaghy, Mr. William Boak, Peacockbank, to Margaret, third daughter of Mr. James Woods, Glentimor. 60-137 01-Jun-60 May 30th, at Urney, by the Rev. James Keatling, brother in law to the bride, assisted by the Rev. John McConaghy, Mr. Charles Boak, of Fulton City, Illinois, America, to Miss Jane Smith, youngest daughter of Mr. James Woods, Glentimore. Name: Charles Boak Birth Date: Birthplace: Age: Spouse's Name: Jane Smith Woods Spouse's Birth Date: Spouse's Birthplace: Spouse's Age: Event Date: 30 May 1860 Event Place: Urney, Tyr, Ire Father's Name: Aaron Boak Mother's Name: Peacockbank is on the Abercorn Estate and as such has records going back much earlier than is common in Ireland. There will be more than the two noted below. Robert Boak held Plot 2 of 33 acres in Peacock-bank in the "Maps of the Abercorn estate in the manors of Donelong, Strabane, Cloghogle, & Derrygoon, in Tyrone, 1777". The Abercorn Estate: Maps of the manors of Strabane, Cloghogle, and Donelong, 1806. Peacockbank William Smith held Plot 1 of 38 acres. James Adams held Plot 2 of 19 acres. (Plot 1 from 1777 has been divided in two to make Plots 1 and 2.) Robert Boak held Plot 3 of 33 acres. I do have a digipic of the above map if anyone wants it. I am a direct descendant of Robert BOAK, William Boak's brother. I am right in the middle of piecing together Aaron Boak's family at Peacockbank which included, I believe, at least 4 brothers: William, Robert, Aaron and Charles and probably one or more sisters (Anne). Their father, Aaron, married a "Miss CROCKETT, daughter of Wm Crockett, Esq. Edenmore" but I have no further on her. Robert came to the US in 1852, passed through Canada, I believe, and re-entered as a naturalized citizen, married with a wife and 2 children at Chicago in 1860. This is when his name first appears changed to Boag. The name-change and consequently, the connection to Boak in Tyrone was an interesting and somewhat convoluted process to work through in order to confirm. I have only one written "historical" document from the second-generation US family, and that is a photo-copy of a typed transcript of one original letter dated 1913 and an extract from another dated 1922. It was pretty much all I had to start my whole family history search, and one of only a couple of references to Tyrone. The first describes a visit to Peacockbank made by Robert's grandson in 1912 and the second  further clarifies information about Robert's brother William, the farm and the family name of Boak. I would love to find out more about the farm at Peacockbank as I hope to be able to visit there in a few short years. And, I am thrilled at the "concentration" on Boak information appearing on Co Tyrone website. Thank you, Len for your compilation of the Boak Genealogical Notes; the 1777 Abercorn Estate, Manor of Strabane rental showing another Robert Boak just helped push my knowledge back at least another generation. There were additional Boaks in Tyrone during Aaron's time; William brought suit against  the executors of James Boak's estate in March 1879 (Irish Law Times, Boak vs Moore and Others, March 12 1879)  over a past debt he believed was owed to his father. I suspect James may have been Aaron's brother or cousin. I have not delved into that branch and would be thrilled to find someone researching those folks. Anyone with information on the Boaks or the farm at Peacockbank is very welcome to contact me direct by email, or by post to the CoTyrone list. Was interested because the Boak farm at PeacockBank passed to my family at the end of nineteenth century. The tenancy passed from William Boak  to my great, great uncle William McCay about 1896, who then purchased it about 1907. ( Valuation Revision Notes). He was the tenant of neigbouring farms in Rabstown. The 1901 census shows William Boak as a retired farmer, living in Ballyfatten, Urney with his wife Margaret and one domestic servant. The 1911 census shows he is still there with his wife of 52 years and that they had no living children. It is interesting to me that their domestic servant in 1911 is the 15 year old great niece of William McCay. In 2009 I visited Tyrone and had a wander round various cemeteries, including Urney, where I saw the family plot of the Boak family. Margaret died on 20th Nov 2012, aged 82, soon followed by William on 1st Dec 2012, aged 89. I have sent a photo to the Gravestone project but it is not a very clear image. The farm at Peacockbank passed to my grandfather John McCay about 1917 and my father was born  and spent the first 18 years of his life there. The last of the farm was sold in 1947, although the house had already gone. I have visited Peacockbank and many of the old buildings are still there although the house my family lived in has been replaced by a modern one. Hope this is of interest to Len or anyone else. Hello Boak researchers, >From the outset I must state that I am not a descendant of the Boaks of Peacockbank, or a researcher; the submitted notes were compiled as a result of a request for assistance posted on the CTI website. Remarkably, it was possible to locate some relevant data. The information looked useful enough for the CTI website and am delighted that there has been a positive response. Many thanks to my friend and correspondent Bernie Donaghey (now Gamble) for the gravestone inscriptions which add flesh to the bones of the long-gone Boaks. Thank you Bernie! William raises the references in my files to the 1824 marriage of Aaron Boak to Miss Crockett (daughter of William) of Edenmore; the Crocketts of Edenmore, Clonleigh parish, Co. Donegal were a family of long-standing in the county. Belinda Mahaffy refers to this family in her history of Ballindrait Presbyterian Church (located in Ballindrait village, Clonleigh parish) in her book “A History of Ballindrait Church and its People” published by the congregation in 2008. The Crocketts arrived in Edenmore in 1790, having come from the glebe lands of Bogay, All Saints parish where they had lived for three generations. The legendary Davy Crockett was a kinsman – his forebears having emigrated in 1709. Bernie draws our attention to the Moores and their probable relationship to the Boaks and a marriage of 1846; here are the details: Urney Presbyterian Church #6 July 9 1846 JAMES MOORE full age bachelor merchant Sion Mills Father: JOHN MOORE farmer & CATHERINE WOODS full age spinster Glentimon Father: JAMES WOODS farmer Witnesses: ALEXANDER MITCHELL & JAMES ADAMS William, you write that you have been waiting for five or six years for any information – such a long wait and regrettable. Am hoping that other researchers aren’t waiting any length of time for the possibility of any useful data going up on the website. 3. Fellow listers - In the course of my research into my Irish ancestors, I found the "Irish Gleanings" website at https://sites.google.com/site/irishgleanings/ To quote the compiler "Information extracted to connect people to Irish townlands I've have been researching the US State Department records at the US National Archives. Most of these records are from the 20th century but many are dated 1865 to 1899. I've extracted information on the place of birth for thousands of people born In Ireland or with Irish parents. Typically this information will connect a person with a location in Ireland to their residence, or former residence, in the United States. Many of these Irish emigrants return to Ireland to live and raise their family." I found a tiny reference to my GGM and her younger sister. I followed the instructions from the compiler "If you find any names that connect with your research please send me an email." From that contact, I now have copies of 6 pages of correspondence between a US lawyer and his Irish counterpart, on the settling of the estate in County Tyrone. The compiler adds to the Gleanings regularly - added 400 items in October 2013. Hoping this information may be of use to someone on the list. Margaret

    3. I have to ask if anyone has considered whether the name Boak might be a variant of Poak/Poke/Pogue/Poague/Polk/Pollock. We all know that the spelling of names was very inconsistent until well into the 19th century and was based on phonetics or the perceived pronunciation of the name, which must have varied widely. It is not unreasonable to imagine P's sounding like B's in some Ulster dialects. There were Poaks and Pollock in the Abercorn estates from the earliest records. There may be no way to settle this from paper trail records but if any Boaks have taken DNA tests it would be a simple matter to compare theirs with Polk/Pollock/Pogue DNA. We have a fairly large database of y-chromosome DNA in WorldFamilies Polk/Pollock website. There are two principle lineage groups in the database - R1b1a2 and I2b1. 3. Hello William and all, I do apologise for my delay in responding, especially since Len’s message which I noted at the time. I am not personally researching the family but happy to pass anything on that may be of use to others. Possibly not related to you yet but I was wondering what the Boak’s had in common with the Moore’s buried beside them. Found this a marriage on Family Search for a James Moore and Catherine Woods who married in Urney 9th July 1846. Unfortunately it doesn’t gives the fathers but perhaps this might mean something to Len. There is a Boak connection to Donegal also. Will give some details shortly, not sure if it will be relevant but you will know better than me whether its worth following up. Best wishes, Bernie. PS apologies for the formatting, not my intention. 2. William Boag
    3. Hello all, After some 5 or six years on the Tyrone list waiting for bits and pieces of information to come my way, suddenly everything falls right into the middle of my family research! 3. Hello Doreen. ON-list reply. Thanks for this nice response. That is indeed my current and long-term e-mail address, so I do not know why your reply to it bounced. grrr…… I am still receiving other e-mails to that mailbox, so I have no explanation for that bounce at all. I just hope that other incoming messages are not being similarly bounced. grrrrr….. As far as I know, neither Dave Hall nor I knows Bill Cardwell. I think that Dave found it on the net. I went back into the link, and at the foot of the page it said "Contact Me". Clicking on that brought up this address -- presumably for Bill Cardwell: [email protected] I hope that that one will work for you, Doreen. Good Luck with it; and I'm glad that you enjoyed the link. 3. Hello Ann, It is nice to see your post regarding your McConkey & Pogue families. The County Tyrone list is generously run and moderated by volunteers, who share a common interest in genealogy and are happy to direct and help others with their personal genealogy quests. Like you, I am a visitor to the County Tyrone list, but I just wanted to encourage you to provide a little more information if you have it. Do you know when your ancestors arrived in America? Which boat they journeyed on? What part of County Tyrone they came from? Their religion? Siblings names? Even your George and Elizabeth's children's names might provide clues, via Scottish/Irish naming patterns. Good communication of more detail, (if available), helps pin-point likely matches, and will enhance your chances of soliciting assistance from fellow listers. With warmest regards and best wishes in your ancestry research.
