    3. Hi Nivard, Like you, I'm not a fan of Facebook genealogy groups, like the generic Irish Genealogy group. The Castlederg group, on the other hand, was set up by folks in/from Castlederg. So, if you're looking for local knowledge, you can't get much more local. I'm not actually in the C'derg group, as my folks weren't from that area, but I do see occasional posts from the group, and they always seem interesting. Of course, I like CTI most of all... :-) Claire K CTI Admin Sent from my iPhone On Jan 10, 2014, at 8:28 AM, Nivard Ovington <[email protected]> wrote: > I am entirely with Ray on this subject > > Why do people bother with facebook, which may be flavour of the month > for now but not a great resource for research, particularly long term > > The list posts are archived for future researchers to gain from and make > contact with previous posters with similar interests > > And a whole lot safer to use > > Give me the lists and boards any day > > Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) > > On 10/01/2014 13:46, ray15 wrote: >> Thank you for the notification, Mervyn; and to Clare for giving them a boost. >> >> Sadly, though, I will have to stay ignorant of everything about your group, as I refuse to join Facebook; and having tried your link, can only read there upon becoming a member. >> >> It’s a pity, but something that I have to accept as long as I choose to stick by my preference for privacy. >> >> Wishing you all the best with it nevertheless. >> Ray in Oz > ------------- > Our community web-site: http://cotyroneireland.com/ > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Good thought. A bit scary though.... I just read the terms of service for the .ca version and didn't see anything about where you reside. In addition I had to provide my full address when I subscribed. I stated that I lived in the states. In the terms of service if you wish to cancel you are asked to send a bunch of info including the country where you live and your phone number including country code. I wouldn't think they would ask that if you could only live in Canada. Fingers crossed.   Researching BOND/BONN/BOHN, MEAGHER, and PELLERIN in Port Felix, Nova Scotia. 3. Listers, I can tell you from my own experience that the Castlederg Facebook page is great, it's a fantastic group of people who willingly give of themselves to try and help others with their family history. If you don't know if your ties are in Castlederg, below is a listing of the 205 townlands of the former Poor Law Union (now Registration District) of Castlederg. The townlands are grouped within the list by parish & alphabetically within that. The numbers refer to the townland's acreage. 3. I totally agree about facebook. It does have its place. I joined years ago to keep up with one of my daughters. I have since connected with so many family members I had totally lost contact with. I was also able to reconnect with a friend I had not seen in many years. She lives in NZ and just happened to be in my area of Canada when I contacted her son through FB. It is a really great way to share pictures too. 3. I use them to hold BDM of people that I am not sure are connected to the family. I also use them to identify naming patterns. I have got a huge spreadsheet just with a time line and references to all the mentions of the names I am searching for. I find the search and find and order/reorder functions much easier on excel than a word document. Many of the researchers whose documents I search in (Macafee in Londonderry etc) use them as they allow searching across multiple columns etc. I would not be without them. 3. Hi Just using the information from our wonderful Co Tyrone site I found this reference to the 1738 emigration to the US. http://www.cotyroneireland.com/emigration/newenglanda-d.html 'Darrah, Robert, of Litchfield, N.H.; from Ireland, 1738; m. 1. J--- McKean; m. 2. --- Blood; Children: Elizabeth, Robert, John, James, Polly, Peggy, Jane, Naomi, David, Samuel. -100th anniv of Bedford, p 297' A secondary reference as it is quoting from a publication and not the source. So you will need to verify the information. So seems to have been married twice. Also on the site is reference to an 1826 Tithe applotment for Darrah in Scraby in Kilskeery Then looked for Kilskeery (Google) and found on the Ireland XO site some www.irelandxo.com/sites/default/files/kilskeery_baptisms.xls a downloadable excel spreadsheet for Kilskeery and with the name Darragh, which is the way I have often seen it spelt. These go back to the mid 1700s. They list a residence which you could search to see where. Other versions of the name are Darrogh and Darrough Look on the Tyrone site for McKean, with all the different spellings. Also Blood. If the family died in NH then finding the death certificate for Jean/Jane/Jess McKean Darrah will let you know if the Blood marriage took place in Ireland or NH. I would search for all the marriages/deaths of all the children mentioned. That way you will be able to see patterns in the naming of the children. Look on Family Search if you have not already done so. 3. Hi Peg Spreadsheets can be extremely useful, I use them/have used them for various things Its very easy to transcribe using a spreadsheet for say a census entry I admit many of the things I used to use them for have now been superseded or outdated as family tree software does it already Some uses I have used before such as recording the quarters/months & years checked for registration indexes, or parish records, or probate years (sometimes I have drawn up a sheet and printed it off so I can tick off the years/quarters etc) As you can now check many of them online and easier it may not be worth recording that in a SS unless in the persons notes One useful use is to draw up a SS to establish what records have been checked or found for a certain person or groups of people Listing the life events across the columns with one for each census year, will etc List family down the left rows, then a small x to denote checked and say a y to show record found, its a very easy way to see what records should then be checked to fill in the blanks (just an example of what you can use a spreadsheet for) Whilst you can use Word of similar I find that far more difficult to manipulate Loretta mentioned difficulty in resizing columns in a SS, its very easy, hover pointer over the column split in the top row (where it shows A B C etc) and either left click and drag the column width to that you require, or simply double click on the line, that will open the column width to the largest text or number in the column to its left If you can't see all the data columns try reducing the size of the spreadsheet to fit on the page Databases are great if using huge quantities of exactly the same data, but are not so easy to set up or manipulate Spreadsheets are very easy The list of uses is endless, you are only restricted by your imagination You don't need Excel or other paid for software, OpenOffice is a complete office suite thats free and as easy to use as any other spreadsheet Nivard Ovington in Cornwall (UK) On 27/12/2013 20:18, pegappraiser wrote: > Has anyone had luck using excel spreadsheets to hold information? 3. I use a spread sheet when gathering information that needs to compared. eg a recent one - checking everyone called James Dobbie born between 1870 and 1876, (because had no clue to his parents, just knew that he arrived Aus in 1901.). I had about 15 for that time period from a certain area. Then following them through census and immigration world wide, to work out which is the right one. Put all the info in columns and compare. I like to add highlighter to help make it work. regards Marg OLeary Port Stephens NSW -----Original Message----- From: pegappraiser Sent: Saturday, December 28, 2013 7:18 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [CoTyIre] spread sheets Has anyone had luck using excel spreadsheets to hold information? 3. I worked for 24 years in a major law firm using both Excel and Microsoft Word. Excel is fine for accounting, bookkeeping, and documents that consist primarily of numbers. I hate using it for text. Word has far more flexibility for displaying text, using either columns, tables, or simply tabs. With Excel, you have to either be good at resizing columns within the spreadsheet OR be satisfied with viewing only parts of text.
