Hello All , I do not know when or where Matthew Ryan and Julia Tobin were born or married but all their children were baptized at The Bansha Roman Catholic Church Co. Tipperary , namely The Children of Matthew and Julia were baptised in the Bansha Catholic Church Co. Tipperary : Bridget bp 12/06/1831 Sponsors Ed O`Connor and Catherine Tobin Catherine bp 10/05/1833 Sponsors James Kennedy & Fanny Hogan Mary bp 01/06/1835 sponsors William O`Dwyer and Mary Shanahan Ellen bp 12/06/1837 Sponsors John Ryan and Fanny Hogan Julia bp 07/06/1840 Sponsors Thomas Tobin and Mary Tobin AS there is only one Ryan Sponsor , I assume that Matthew Ryan could be from another parish and Julia Tobin`s hometown was Bansha . The 1851 census shows that Julia ( mother ) and children are in London but no trace of Matthew before Coming to Melbourne November 1857 on the Shalimar . Can anyone help . Thanks Laurie
What I have noted doing Irish research is that the woman married in her hometown parish, and they went off to live in the husband's parish, which would then make Bansha his parish and not hers, in fact children of a RC marriage were baptised in the husbands' parish not the woman's as a general rule. Although I see no reason why the first born may not be born in the womans' parish if she went home to give birth with her mother to hold her hand so to speak. So is there no reason that they both belonged to the Bansha Parish? Suggestions to think about not to deviate you from your search. When you think about it Cara. It is not so different from today. We get married where we women were brought up and move to our husbands parents address (if you married a farmer)and add to the continual line of children with husband surname and same parish and address- Just like our mother-in-law did! And yes I married into an Irish RC family here in Aus. Hanrahan and Ryan- I find the Ryan's too hard. "Born Ireland" for a Patrick Ryan is in my too look at later pile!
