Annette, you may want to consider pursuing some of those siblings for William as well. I found 10 additonal baptisms in Kilsheelan Catholic parish born to Patrick Gibbs and Ann McGrath: John 1845 Michael 1848 Maria 1850 Julia 1852 Patrick 1856 Anna 1858 Bridget 1859 Thomas 1861 Johanna 1863 Ellen 1870 There are however, 18 baptisms for the surname Gibbs in this Kilsheelan Catholic parish, the remaining baptisms, in the 1868-1880 time period were all born to a man called William, would this by chance be the William born in 1844? I believe I have the marriage of that William, in 1866, to Catherine Donovan, the marriage record notes his father was Patrick. One of the suggestions was to have a look at who was in the parish during the time of the Primary Valuation, done in Tipperary in 1850. Killurney townland, where you find the family, is in Temple-etney civil parish. At the time of both the Primary Valuation and the Tithe Applotments (done in this parish in both 1826 and 1827), the only Gibbs listed in the townland was Thomas Gibbs. My overall hunch is that Patrick is probably on this land, and if you were to check Valuation updates, you might see the switch in names from Thomas to Patrick at some point after the time of the initial Valuation. Another thing I'd wonder about is whether you'd pursued the census returns for this townland. In 1901, a Patrick Gibbs is living in the townland, in the home with him are his sister, Bridget and his brother Thomas, as well as a nephew Charles. These siblings are obviously the children born to Patrick Gibbs and Ann McGrath, and the group of them remain there in 1911 as well. If you find yourself tying in with that Kayes family in Killurney, let me know. They also spell their name Keyes and they belong to me! Cindy Wood
Hi Cindy, Yes, they are Patrick and Anastasia's children. William is my husband's g-g-grandchildren and yes the William you found was the father of the children born between 1868-1887. I do have William and Catherine's marriage record. But thank you for offering. I agree that Patrick is probably on the land with Thomas in 1850. I wonder if Thomas is the father or perhaps an older brother. How would I go about checking valuation updates? I have seen the 1901 and 1911 census and most definitely they are William's (b. 1844) siblings in Killurney. On one of the censuses, I can't remember which one, they have William's son living with them (Charles Peter). So far no ties to Kayes/Keyes, but I will certainly keep an eye out. Killurney is small enough that it is possible. Thanks!
