Pre 1836 The fire in the Public Record Office complex in the Four Courts during the Irish Civil War (1922-1923) resulted in the severe damage and destruction of records. Although not all records from the Chief Secretary's Office in Dublin Castle survive, especially from the period before 1836, sufficient material has survived to make the transportation records held in the National Archives a major source for Australians researching Irish convict ancestors. Penal transportation to Australia (and later to Bermuda or Gibraltar) covered the years 1791 until 1853 when the sentence of penal transportation was commuted to a prison sentence in Ireland. I would suggest a browse of the site here and a read of what they have to say would be of great benefit to you http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/ireland-australi a-transportation-records-1791-1853/748-2/ cheers cara -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John O'Neil Sent: 03 February 2012 16:13 To: [email protected] Subject: [COTIPPERARY] shanahan Hello to all I was hoping that someone could tell me where i might find information on the Summer Assizes for Tipperary.I am looking for a Denis Shanahn trial date 19 July 1836.He was on trial for grievous assault he received a 7year sentence.Arrived in Australia in December 1836 on the ship Earl Grey.I was wondering if there were any newspaper reports at that time John Please remove extraneous text when replying: Please remember to "snip" short the message to which you are replying, and check the subject line. Hi John Newspapers are about your best bet for Irish trial reports, I assume you are in OZ, if you are in Canberra the National Library has the Dublin Freeman's Journal but not on Trove. Also there are some digitised newspapers available now at www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk which I believe has the Freeman's Journal but there is a charge I think. The transportation database is incomplete, it can be a great source if you are lucky but only ever covers details of trials in correspondence about petitions for clemency etc. Unfortunately in its present state it is very unwieldy, why O why have they changed this ! On a more personal note Denis is a connection of mine, he married Mary Newman sister of my grgrgrtgrandfather John so perhaps you could contact me off list Robyn Hardie On 03/02/2012, at 4:13 PM, John O'Neil wrote: > Hello to all > I was hoping that someone could tell me where i might find > information on the Summer Assizes for Tipperary.I am looking for a > Denis Shanahn trial date 19 July 1836.He was on trial for grievous > assault he received a 7year sentence.Arrived in Australia in > December 1836 on the ship Earl Grey.I was wondering if there were > any newspaper reports at that time > John > > > Please remove extraneous text when replying: > Please remember to "snip" short the message to which you are > replying, and check the subject line.
