Phil, I would bet slavery existed in every country, but most still have not admitted it. Makes tracing harder. True slavery existed in Ireland from before the start of written records and it took centuries to stop slave trading here; most of Ireland's nobility had concubines [plural] but it is the social standing of their children that fascinates me most - half royal and half slave..
