Thanks again to Gay for publishing these notes. Aside from James Barry's Tipperary birth, this was also interesting as a reminder of the great Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919, which took the lives of up to 100 million people (between 3% and 6% of the global population.. In the course of my genealogical research, I had learned that at least a couple of my kin had been among the victims of that pandemic. I suspect most on this list had similar casualties among their antecedents. Though referred to for a while as "the Spanish flu" (only because wartime censorship in many countries largely kept the public in the dark about it's extent and impact until the flu reached Spain, which did not have such censorship), it's origins are still speculative / hypothetical; ranging from arrival by meteorite and (possibly subsequent) bird to pig to human mutations/transmission. But a couple facts are clear. One is that ironically, while most pandemics hit hardest those with compromised / weaker immune systems (such as the elderly, or very young), the 1918 flu's victims were in contrast more often healthy young adults. Their stronger immune responses often led to the pneumonia which killed many including apparently James Barry. Another is that military camps (full of healthy young men in close quarters) experienced significant outbreaks. Fort Riley, Kansas, a large training camp of 30,000 to 50,000 men, reported an outbreak in early March 1918 (the first US case having been reported two months earlier.in a different part of Kansas). It could be concluded that World War I was a significant factor in the spread of the disease and the total numbers killed. If considered in that light, the number of casualties of that war might be triple or more the16 million estimated losses. ~Roger Hoffmann > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Message: 1 > Date: Wed, 29 Apr 2015 12:35:46 -0700 > From: Gay Young <gyoungest@gmail.com> > Subject: [COTIPPERARY] James BARRY > To: CoTipperary-L@rootsweb.com > Message-ID: <796D4614-116A-41E9-B9EA-9A2E3FE7F527@gmail.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii > > New Jersey, USA Archives > World War I Casualties > > Name: Barry, James > Age: 25 years 3 months > Number: 553,592 > Organization served in: Co I 4 Inf Co C 1st Bn US Guards, to death > Grade: Pvt > Race: White > Residence: Paterson > Enlisted at: Ft Slocum > Date: 18 april 1917 > Birthplace: Tipperary, Ireland > Cause of Death: Lobar pneumonia, Influenza > Death date: 17 Oct 1918 > Person to notified of death: Sister, Mrs George Hassal, 160 Sherman > Avenue, New York City > > > ------------------------------ > > To contact the COTIPPERARY list administrator, send an email to > COTIPPERARY-admin@rootsweb.com. > > To post a message to the COTIPPERARY mailing list, send an email to > COTIPPERARY@rootsweb.com. > > __________________________________________________________ > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > COTIPPERARY-request@rootsweb.com > with the word "unsubscribe" without the quotes in the subject and the body > of the > email with no additional text. > > > End of COTIPPERARY Digest, Vol 10, Issue 48 > *******************************************
