    3. My great grandmother Bridget CARTY/Carthy/ McCarty/McCarthy a sponsored immigrant came to Canterbury, New Zealand in 1862 under the name CARTY. With her were two other women, Maria DONAHUE and Catherine FLAHERTY, also sponsored (i.e. guaranteed to pay their passage) by Bridget's brother-in-law William RENAHAN (also various spellings). Bridget CARTY 1841 - 1921 was born in Ballycapple, Tipperary. Her parents, Martin CARTY/CARTHY and Susan QUINLISK were farmers and I have found 9 children. Margaret CARTY (Bridget's older sister) born C1836 married William RENAHAN Feb, 1854 in Tipperary. With 2 of their children they emigrated to New Zealand, 1861. They had 5 more children in New Zealand. A Carty from Ballycapple has been in touch, but we have not been able to connect the families. At Ballygibbon cemetery which is not far from Ballycapple is this headstone which I was told about." Erected by Stephen & Matthew McCarthy of Ballycapple in memory of their father Martin McCarthy who died 29th Decr. 1896 aged 97 years and their mother Susan McCarthy died February 1897 aged 99 years" Stephen and Martin were Bridget's brothers. Although I have Susan dying age 87. Information on any of the names or area would be great, to help build a picture of their lives. Sandra
