Well Lads this thread brought back some memories and a chuckle. Years ago as a building inspector in North Carolina I had to meet with a home owner and one of the County Sanitarians over the proposed location of a residential swimming pool. The sanitarian had been the original inspector for the septic tank installation, however, his records did not show the location of the drain field in relation to the septic tank or the house. After some time probing for the field he said 'There's a better way' and went off to his car. He returned with two brass welding rods with a short bend in one end. The home owner looked a me a said 'You've got to be ******* me.' Having never seen the sanitarian doing this be fore all I could do was shrug my shoulders and watch. He proceeded to walk around the yard and as the rods crossed and uncrossed he marked out an area on the ground. A few probes and he said 'There it is.' As building commenced his verdict was verified. I met the homeowner many times over the years and he would always mention it and shake his head.
