From the Hibbert Review, by Isabella Campbell, 1953 - 1959 Concession 2, Lot 23, Hibbert, Perth County, Ontario Canada By 1854 Edward PURSELL owned Lot 23. That year he was one of the liquor inspectors in the township (Hibbert). Ten PURSELL brothers and sisters came from Tipperary and settled in Hibbert and surrounding townships. They were Edward, Patrick, James, John, Michael, Matthew, Thomas, Ellen (Mrs John KENNEDY), Annie (Mrs John DERMODY) and Mary (Mrs James LENNON). Thomas and Matthew had the East 50 until Thomas MURPHY got it in 1867. By 1856 Michael PURSELL had the West 50. He was accidentally shot by an old uncle. Michael DORSEY had this 50 for a time. From 1874 John MURPHY owned the 100 acres, and his son, John F MURPHY who married Mildred BARRY, is the present owner. On this lot, near the concession, there is a large barren stony hill on which little was ever grown. 1851 Census, Hibbert, Perth County, Ontario Canada Concession 2, Lot 23, 100 acres, 40 under cultivation, 25 under crops, 15 under pasture, 0 under garden or orchard, 60 under woods, 15 acres, 250 produce bsh Edward Purcell 58 Ireland farmer Ellen 43 Ireland Michael 20 USA Thomas 18 USA Martin 17 USA Mary 16 USA Catherine 14 USA James 12 USA Margaret 10 USA Bridget 7 USA Joseph 6 Canada and listed separately - Edward 15 Ireland labourer From Ontario BMD - Marriages Kathleen Lennon b 1881 Canada parents James Lennon and Mary Purcell married 29 Nov 1905 Huron County James Devereaux b 1867 Canada parents John Devereaux and Mary Shanshaw Margaret Lennon, 23 born and resident of McKillop parents James Lennon and Mary Purcell Married 23 Jun 1884 at Seaforth, Huron County Andrew Forehan, 25 born Canada and resident of Michigan, USA at time of marriage parents John Forehen and Mary Holbert witnesses James Forehan of West Wawanos and Mary Lennon of McKillop Peter Edward Lennon, clerk born 1882 Canada parents James Lennon, clerk, and Mary Purcell married 2 Sep 1908 Seaforth, Huron County Marie Louise Kidd b 1869 resident Seaforth parents Thomas Kidd, food inspector, and Margaret Keenan witnesses Fenella Kidd of New York city and John Francis Leo Killoran of Toronto From Ontario BMD - Births John E Kennedy and Ellen Purcell Ellen 23 Apr 1875 Frederick Nelson 29 Aug 1877, Teeswater, Bruce County Elizabeth Violetta 7 Nov 1881 Teeswater, Bruce County Thomas Purcell and Bridget Dermody Honora 3 Aug 1871 Huron County Agnes Ann 29 Sep 1877 Huron County Thomas Leo 10 Jun 1882 Huron County John Joseph Mark 28 Apr 1888 Huron County From Ontario BMD - Deaths Margaret Purcell, widow b 1812 Ireland d 2 Mar 1893 Hibbert, Perth County Thomas Purcell b 1847 Tipperary d 28 May 1890 Seaforth, Huron County informant Miss Purcell Seaforth Bridget Purcell parents John Dermody and Honora Gleason b 6 Jan 1851 St Columban d 11 Dec 1933 21 Front Street, Stratford informant, daughter Mrs M J McCauley of 21 Front Street
