This is all very exciting knowing my brick wall might start coming down a bit. My gg grandparents Andrew and Catherine Ryan Hogan (her parents are Edward and Catherine Ryan), left Ballygriffin, Co. Tipperary in 1847 for America. However, they first stayed somewhere in Canada for 2 years. I'd love to know anything about Andrew's line in Ballygriffin at that time and also if that's where Catherine and her parents were actually from. Andrew and Catherine Hogan's 1st of 5 children, David was born there. I'm also really interested in discovering the existance of present day offspring. That is an awfully big wish to be sure. Thanks for being there Janet. Elaine Farnan Hall [email protected]
Elaine, Ballygriffin looks like it was once anciently a very large piece of land and later broken up into Religmurry, Kilfeakle, Golden and Ballygriffin. The most memorable thing I have found where it was named was: "In 1786 a moving bog broke out and joined the R. Suir at Ballygriffin Bridge: 300 acres which it covers are rendered useless to the proprietor." Then: On March 27th, 1788, a large bog of 500 acres at Ballymore, near Knockavilla, began to be agitated for three days before it burst on the 30th March and flowed towards Ballygriffin, Golden, burying 4 houses and covering a large tract of land. Rest assured it has been drained and will not burst upon you while you are visiting. :-) Some of the old names I have come across are: BALLYGRIFFIN or Ballegriffin or Ballygressen or Ballygressine OR VILLA GRIFFIN OR GRIFFON OR CAPELLA TRIFFUN OR VILLA GALFREDI Janet On Mon, Jul 11, 2011 at 6:11 PM, E.
