This message is for Michael Kearns. I am researching Hanrahan's in Victoria Australia. Hence reading your message. This lead me to a marriage to the KAIRN family who immigrated with the name KAIRNS And I have just found the 2nd Great grandfather was christened as Michael KEARNS 1825 in Wicklow. As this is the exact spelling of your name I am wondering if there was any connection? He seemed to have a brother Francis who kept spelling his name KEARNS, 9 children born in Wicklow. None of the large family in Australia spell their name this way!!!! Love to hear your thoughts on this. Della Palmer
Hello Della, I have never come across Kairn or Kairns in any of my Kearns research and I do not know of any Kearns connections outside Tipp. I had a quick look on IFHF for Kairn and Kairns got following results. All Counties - exact spelling search - Kairn (1) Kairns (22).Some of these are in Co Wicklow. All Counties - Standard Surname search - (6550) the vast majority of these 6550 are Kearns so IFHF consider Kairn Kairns derivatives of the standard surname Kearns which explains your findings in Victoria. These variations usually occur through pronunciation. My family have always pronounced Kearns as "Kerns" but others have pronounced it as Cairns/Kairns or K(ear)ns many many times resulting in it being written incorrectly. I will post my Kearns Roll-call as a seperate email.
