Hi Pat, I am descended from Dermodys that originally came from Ireland to Ontario, Canada about 1832. The 'original' family members all stayed in Ontario (some near Lake Simcoe and some in Grey Co., east of Lake Simcoe). However, there are some of their descendents who went to Kansas and to Michigan. My side of the Dermody family stayed in Ontario for a period of time and then went to western Canada. However, one never knows if there is a link back - perhaps a sibling went to Canada and another to the USA. Who knows!!?? If you wish to contact me for further information, please use my email at cdermody@accesscomm.ca rather than go through the public mailing list. Thanks for your note, Pat! I have been working with her ever since. My husband's ggrandmother was Anna Darmody (spelling varies a lot). She was born in Vermont around 1836. She married John Walsh. She died in Elma, Iowa. The Darmodys seem to have been in Wisconsin and Iowa. We have her in censuses 1850,1860,1870,1880, 1885. Where are your Dermodys from? Any of those places? I do have a membership with Ancestry and love it for searching but find the family tree stuff is not the greatest as so many people take what is in there and add on to it if it is right or not. Oh well. Thanks again for all the info you sent. Best, Pat
Cathy, Thanks for all the information. I am sorry I should have said what I wanted. I did have that info you found on ancestry. Always hoping I will find someone else working the same family. Speaking of that my daughter Aileen and I have been doing genealogy for over 30 years. Dermody is one of the names we are searching. Has she been in touch with you? Hi Pat. Sorry it wasn't new information - I didn't know whether you had a membership with ancestry or not or what you were specifically looking for. With respect to the Dermody family history, I get a lot of emails, but I don't think I've heard from an Aileen. Feel free to email me directly at cdermody@accesscomm.ca rather than go through the mailing list if you wish. Let me know why you are interested in the Dermody family and how you fit in the family. Thanks. Look forward to hearing from you. I looked in ancestry and found the following information: Martin Hennessy died 12 July 1862 in Bethel, Hunters Point, NY, just months after his wife died. Anastasia was born 28 July 1811 and died 07 April 1862 at Little Equinuck, NY. They had a family as follows: 1. Martin 2. Richard 3. Anastasia (1837 - ??) 4. Mary (1839 - 1912) 5. Dennis (1841 - ??) Anne (1844 - ??) Mary was born 13 Oct. 1839 in Drom, Tipperary, Ireland. She died 09 Mar. 1912 in Forest City, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, USA. She was married to James Fallon 17 Jan. 1858, and had a large family: Thomas, Thomas, Michael, Hannah, Honora, Dennis, Martin, Ellen, Barnard, Charles. Hope this is helpful for you. Thank you Ed Madden for your ENGLAND/BANNON tips. Here is a tip for you (I think I shared this with you a few years ago). A Judy MADDEN was a baptismal sponsor for Catherine ENGLAND in 1846 in Oldcastle, Bourney Parish. The other sponsor was Michael SHEEDY. There is also an Edward MADDEN residing on Lot 4, Corriga, noted in the House and Field Books. I have been very interested for some time in the Rody ENGLAND residing in Corriga as per Griffith's but have been unable to find him listed in any other documents. I wonder if this Rody is the Rodolphus ENGLAND listed with Joseph and Ellen ENGLAND on the Tithe Defaulter's List for Corriga. I believe my Catherine (BANNON) ENGLAND, widow, was a tenant on the lot adjoining Rody's in Corriga. This info came from the House and Field books. Catherine also owned land in Bonagortbaun. She does not appear in Griffith's because she moved to England with her 3 daughters after Benjamin ENGLAND'S death and before Griffith's was published. I will investigate the other tips you sent. Thanks again. I am still searching for my Benjamin ENGLAND. I know he married Catherine BANNON of Aghsmear in 1841. I believe he was born about 1800 and died between 1846 and 1851. Benjamin and Catherine had 3 daughters: Margaret (b. 1842); Ellen (b. 1844); and Kate (b. 1846) all in Bourney (Couraganeen) Parish. The marriage and birth records all say Roman Catholic. I have ruled out at least 3 Benjamin ENGLANDs found in Tipperary due to their birth and death dates. There is also a Benjamin ENGLAND in Laois who has also been ruled out. I see a Benjamin ENGLAND living with a Benjamin BULFIN in Ofaly on the 1821 census but have not been able to find out any more about that individual. I also found a Benjamin ENGLAND who was a Bridewell keeper in Roscrea in 1831. I don't know which Benjamin this is. Any help gratefully appreciated. This seems to be the Protestant line: John Sadlier b. 1632 of London & Ballintemple who came to Ireland in 1660's had Clement Sadlier of Ballintemple [Dundrum] [John's 3rd son] who m. Grace Chadwick dau of William Chadwick of Ballinard. They had: 1) Clement William Sadlier d. c. 1771. He had Wiliam Sadlier d. 1791 of Shronell. He had Clement Sadlier who m. Johanna Scully of Shronell. They had William b. 1807 of Shronell & James d. 1881 & John 1813-56, a banker. Clement who d.c. 1771 held lands in Bruis' Lattin & Shronell. 2) Nicholas d. 1762 of Golden Garden; he had Richard 1741 - 1823 of Golden Garden & Sadlier's Wells; He had Richard 1781 - 1834 of Sadliers Wells & Nelson Street; he had Richard d. 1877 of Sadliers Wells. 3) Richard d. 1774 of Holycross; he had Clement of Holycross & Rathcommon; he had Richard who married in 1783 and he of Holycross & Nelson Street & Scalaheen; he had Richard 1785 - 1845 of Scalaheen & he had Thomas L. 1860 of Henry Street. The 2nd son of Richard m. 1783 was James Sadlier of Brookville who married Elizabeth Clarke dau of Rev Marshal Clarke; they had James R. Sadlier 1820 - ? of Brookville and he had Marshal 1893 - 1964 of Brookville. The 3rd son of Richard m. 1783 was William 1797 - 1869 of Scalaheen; he had Richard 1835 - 1903 of Scalaheen & Henry of Lattin & James of Roesborough. We would love to connect/ prove the Catholic line to this, particularly the main Shronell line. The usual but not only connections might be: 1) a marriage between religions; 2) a conversion; 3) an illegitimate child with a Catholic mother. Do you have a marriage record for Clement m. Bridget O'Dwyer? i.e. is it possible Johanna Scully died young and Clement remarried to Bridget O'Dwyer? Hi George, What BDM certificates have you got for Patrick or Bridget & their children. Patricks death certificate should give his years in Australia, age at marriage, year of marriage, children. If they married in South Australia it should show up. If Bridget died first it'd may be better to get her death certificate as Patrick would possibly be the informant & the info would be more accurate. There is a small townland of Bannamore comprising 46 acres in the civil parish of Mortlestown. I am seeking information about the Tipperary family of Edmond PURCELL and Mary DWYER. Their son Edmond (born circa1787 near Thurles) and his wife Mary RYAN (born circa 1802, Tipperary) sailed as assisted immigrants with their two children Edmond (abt 12 yrs) and Mary (abt 16 yrs), on the vessel Glenswilly, which departed Plymouth, England, on 26 Nov 1840 and arrived in Sydney, New South Wales, on 11 March 1841. Edmond PURCELL married Mary RYAN at Upperchurch in 1822. According to the shipping records, their fathers were farmers. Mary's father was Edward 'Ned' RYAN and her mother's first name was also Mary. Their daughter, Mary PURCELL was born about 1825 in Drumbane, near Thurles. Their son, Edmond PURCELL, was born circa 18 Mar 1827 in Tipperary. The Upperchurch 1829 Tithe Applotments list Edmond PURCELL in the townlands of Ballyboy and Cappaghnaleigh, parish of Upperchurch, Templebeg. An Edward and Mary PURCELL are listed on the Griffiths Valuation for 1851 as tenants in Tipperary, North Riding, Barony of Kilnamanagh, Upper, Union Thurles, Parish of Upperchurch and Townland of Gortkelly (landlord Andrew RYAN). Elizabeth I've forwarded your email to Ted Meehan who runs the Meehan-L list on rootsweb. I believe Thomas Meehan from Kilcoran is his ancestor. My Meehan/Mehigan ancestors came to Castletownroche, County Cork, in the late 1700's. In 1690 Christopher the O'Meighan, our common ancestor was killed in the Battle of the Boyne. His widow, Marguarite O'Reilly and their three youngest sons went to Kilcoran, a farm which remained in the family for over 300 years. (I have some pictures of the farm from my Ireland trip last summer I can send you if you're interested.) Their two oldest sons went to France and continued fighting in the French army. One of them, James (or Jacques), married an Elizabeth Russell. One of their son's Guillaume (William) was a political activist and writer who spent some time in the Bastille for his views. (He didn't lose his head or I wouldn't be writing this). On his death in 1766 his widow Charlotte Therese Boitel and infant son Jean Joseph (John Joseph) joined the rest of the family at Kilcoran. Jean Joseph's son Robert went to Castletownroche, probably because he would never inherit the Kilcoran farm. My line (Daniel, Garrett, John Joseph, John Joseph Jr.) descends from him. Ted has written a fascinating book on the clan history going way back "Annals of O'Meighan". We even have a saint in our ancestry - St. Molaise, a Meehan and patron saint of the Meehan/Mehigan/O'Meighan clan. He lived in the 400's and was head of the church in Ireland at that time. (Way back then priests could marry - the vow of celibacy wasn't instituted I believe until the 1300's). Happy hunting. Bob Meehan Dunwoody Georgia USA

My great grandmother Bridget CARTY/Carthy/ McCarty/McCarthy a sponsored immigrant came to Canterbury, New Zealand in 1862 under the name CARTY. With her were two other women, Maria DONAHUE and Catherine FLAHERTY, also sponsored (i.e. guaranteed to pay their passage) by Bridget's brother-in-law William RENAHAN (also various spellings). Bridget CARTY 1841 - 1921 was born in Ballycapple, Tipperary. Her parents, Martin CARTY/CARTHY and Susan QUINLISK were farmers and I have found 9 children. Margaret CARTY (Bridget's older sister) born C1836 married William RENAHAN Feb, 1854 in Tipperary. With 2 of their children they emigrated to New Zealand, 1861. They had 5 more children in New Zealand. A Carty from Ballycapple has been in touch, but we have not been able to connect the families. At Ballygibbon cemetery which is not far from Ballycapple is this headstone which I was told about." Erected by Stephen & Matthew McCarthy of Ballycapple in memory of their father Martin McCarthy who died 29th Decr. 1896 aged 97 years and their mother Susan McCarthy died February 1897 aged 99 years" Stephen and Martin were Bridget's brothers. Although I have Susan dying age 87. Information on any of the names or area would be great, to help build a picture of their lives. Sandra
