Nenagh Guardian 21 July 1839 Advertisement To the Editor of the Nenagh Guardian Sir – We request you will find room in your valuable Journal for the following assertion: - As we cannot allow the humane and tender good acts of our worthy Agent, George Garvey, Esq, of Thornvale, to pass by longer unnoticed – as, for experience, we can assert that, notwithstanding his extensive employments in Leinster and Munster, &c &c which is well known, he has never sold a poor man’s beast for the rent; but when he finds that the land is let too dear (on the industrious man), he does not eject, but sends two understanding and disinterested farmers to value the land, and lets it to them at a fair rent, to enable the industrious man to support his family, and pay his rent tot e satisfaction of both parties. Oh! happy, thrice happy, for Ireland if every gentleman in his capacity (and the Noblemen who employs them) would adopt and pursue his morals – as, in our opinions, it would be a greater means of promoting peace and tranquility in Ireland, than all the military force that can be procured. May God protect Garvey wherever he is seen; His health in full bumpers, long life to the Queen. Castle . . . The Catholic Press, Queensland, Australia - 23 August 1923 Mr Patrick Hynes, one of Waverley's most respected residents passed away at his residence, Dennison Street, on the 6th inst, after a long illness. He was a native of Tipperary Ireland, and came to Australia in 1865. He leaves one son, Patrick Hynes, who holds the position on Inspector of Stores in the Railway Department, and three married daughters, Mrs T Kerwick, Mrs James Fitzpatrick and Mrs J Vanny. The late Mr Hynes was for many years a contractor for works in connection with the Waverley Council. Although he possessed a rugged manner, his straightforward and honest way, in conjunction with a kind heart, won him a host of friends. He was always ready to assist the cause of charity; and it is safe to say that there is not a Catholic building in the eastern suburbs that has not a few bricks donated by him. Australia Death Index lists parents as John Hynes and Sarah

Hello all Have added in some information from Irish records to the lists provided by Gay Young Kate Leddick - Catherine Maddock (surname from daughter's marriage record) Baptised 04 Mar 1846 Ardfinnan Parents Joseph Maddock Mary Looby. Parents can be seen in 1860 US Census. Johanna Kirwan nee Gleason >From Iowa State Census 1925 parents names are given as Thomas (not John) Gleeson and Ellen Breen. Johanna Gleeson with above parents baptised 08 apr 1838 Galbertstown Moycarky Tipperary. Julia Cunningham possible surname Trefey /Teefey Marriage record to William Cunningham 26 Jul 1873 in Johnson co. Iowa gives name as Julia tTephy so probable name Teefey. Found a baptism of Judith Teefy 10 Aug 1851 Parents Michael Teefy Catherine (not Mary) O Brien Longstone Balynahinch Tipperary - only a possibility. Michael Gilmartin Iowa 1925 state census gives his parents as Michael Gilmartin Margaret Walsh. Baptism for Michael Kilmartin parents John Kilmartin Margaret Walsh 29 May 1849 Gortafurra in Galbally and Sherlow parish. Bernard Concannon Father Carberry Concannon Didn't find a baptism for Bernard but found a baptism for Delia /Brigid possibly his sister (showing in the Iowa censu) 9 Jan 1858 parents Carberry Concannon and Mary Kinnidy but in Roscommon Dysart/Tisrare Parish not Tipperary. with the rare first name of Carberry it could be a strong possibility. William Corbett Civil birth record 27 Jan 1888 address Ballintogher KillenauleTipperary William age 13 in 1901 Census http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tipperary/Killenaule/Ballintogher/1705359/ Patrick Henry Gleeson Mother's surname given as Linners . As there is no equivalent Irish surname searched for Gleeson and Shinners Baptism record for Patrick Gleeson 26 Dec 1859 Shalee Ballynahinch Tipperary Parents Daniel Gleeson Catherine Shinners - probable as the baptism dates match. Couldn't find anything on the other names on the list. Clare
Harry Gleeson was executed for killing Mary McCarthy [at New Inn], who was shot dead in Tipperary, in November, 1940..... He was sentenced to death and was executed in Mountjoy Prison in April, 1941, just two months after his conviction.... Mr Gleeson will become the first recipient of a posthumous pardon from the State after the Government determined that his conviction was unsafe [unproved]. http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/pardon-for-irish-man-hanged-for-murder-75-years-ago-31112760.html Janet

Janet Many thanks for that info. It definitely makes more sense, especially since the transcription was from a register written in Latin with sometimes weird-looking or hard to decipher letters. Bob
Hi Bob & Kevin, Bob, Re your Margaret Scully ["There is also a Margaritam Scully baptized June 7, 1805, father Cornelis Scully, mother Margareta Meal, sponsors Patricius Huller and Ellena Rea [not Rea], Ardfield and Radberry parish."], I would suggest that her mother might be Margaret Real [not Meal], which would make her sponsor Ellen Real. Real is one of those names that is often read incorrectly. There were some in Lattin parish. Real can be an Irish name also as Ryall or Ryle, but was also a Palatine name found, at least, in Co. Wexford and who knows where else. Hi Bob Thanks for your reply. At present I don't have very much on my Scully line so your info/leads is appreciated. Regards Kevin NelsonNew Zealand From: Robert Meehan via <cotipperary@rootsweb.com> To: cotipperary@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, 31 March 2015 5:08 PM Subject: [COTIPPERARY] Roll Call; Ryan, Scully, Condon, Hogan Kevin My g-g-g-g grandmother was a Margaret Scully from Castletownroche, County Cork. Here is what I have on her line that might link to your Scullys from Cashel. Happy hunting. Bob Meehan Dunwoody GA USA Per Mallow HC's records, William Joyce married Margaret Scully in Castletownroche February 7, 1823 with witnesses James Magner and Robert Mehigan. The only possible match I have found in Cloyne, Cork and Ross, or Tipperary for Margaret Scully is a baptism on December 14, 1802 in St. Mary's parish, Clonmel, Tipperary, with father John Scully, mother Catherine Brien, sponsors John Hearn and Maria Daniel and priest J. F. The Scullys of county Tipperary descend from Jeremiah Scully who was established at Cashel in the mid 17th century. James Scully (1737-1816) established a bank in the town of Tipperary. It would be possible John is a descendant of James but I have no corroborating information. There is also a Margaritam Scully baptized June 7, 1805, father Cornelis Scully, mother Margareta Meal, sponsors Patricius Huller and Ellena Rea, Ardfield and Radberry parish. There is a John Scully listed in the 1826 Tithe Applotment listing for Castletownroche in Castletown, land 0 acres, 0 rods, 13 perches, value one pound, ten shillings per acre, total value 2 shillings, 5 pence, a kitchen garden of good quality. This house appears to be in the center of town along with about eighty others of similar size and value. Neighbors on one side were Norry Sullivan, John Brion, Marsha Geogien, Gionias Stack and Catherine Grady, and on the other side Owen Sullivan, David Murphy, Patrick Kelly, John Desmond, and John Duane. The size of these properties would indicate that the inhabitants were probably not tenant farmers but perhaps worked at the nearby town mill. In the November 1859 Griffith's Valuation 9 Chapel Road, Castletownroche, we find Jeremiah Scully leasing a house and garden from Richard A. Oliver, Esq., of 0 acres 0 rods and 11 perches, value 2 shillings land, 10 shillings buildings, total value 12 shillings. There were four Jeremiah Scullys baptized in Cloyne Diocese from 1805-1825. However, none of them had a John as a father. Margaret Scully Joyce, a labourer's wife, died March 29, 1874 in Castletownroche of bronchitis, per William Joyce, present at death. (Record does not indicate whether this William was the husband or the son of Margaret Joyce.). When replying to a message in the digest please do two things: 1.
