I am going to put on the Freemen of Co. Tipperary as of 1840. Freemen were allowed to vote in elections and in order to be a Freeman one had to have a tie to land, i.e. ownership, or a lease for lives; a month to month tenancy would not do; if you didn't have a land connection, you will not be on this list. There are a lot of these and the listing very convenient as they fall between the Tithes and Griffiths. I AM GOING TO NEED YOUR HELP with the surnames and maybe the townlands in some cases. Any surname you recognize as being connected to the area in the message will help as the writing is very difficult to read and I am sure to get a lot of the spelling wrong. For right now consider what I am putting out as a rough draft. I'll start with Lower Ormond and the initial area seems to be Nenagh, Ballingarry and Loughkeen and places nearby. If you have a connection to any of these men, now would be a great time to talk about them. Janet

There are two websites that will have information of the events planned for next year: http://ireland.ie/ http://sluggerotoole.com/2015/05/20/government-of-irelands-plans-for-2016-commemorations/ The first one is the official government website and there you can sign up to get a newsletter and program changes. Those newsletters could end up being "keepers". Janet

Hi Della I haven't tried searching Ireland for law records but have thoroughly searched Trove. John Flanagan worked for Samuel Munchley South prior to being admitted to the Supreme Court of Victoria but no idea who he worked for being admitted. I did find he had something to do with Caroline Chisholm at one stage. Also Was Johns wife listed as a widow when she died and where is she buried? Most cemetery trusts will tell you who is buried in the same plot. try the site called Australian cemeteries And Victorian death certificates can contain a huge amount of information, just depends on who filled it out. You may be able to put his wife name in to the john Flanagan search in the BMD data base and narrow it down that way, without buying anything. Della Palmer
Shirlee, Have you tried Trinity for records or listing from the bar or Queen's counsel? Also try trove- the newspapers in Aus. For an obit of a solicitor for the Kyneton papers? What about the actual solicitors office, If it was Palmers, the current owners still have a history section at the office. Hi! Hoping someone can help with this! I have been trying to get more information on my great grandmother who was from Tipperary. Her name was Margaret CAHILL and thought she was born in 1869 but her death certificate states 1872 but that could be incorrect. She came over to US in 1887 and married John MAGUIRE in 1894. They settled in Troy, NY and I have found a few possible immigration records but can't tell for sure if that would be her or not. She died in 1931 in Troy, NY and her obituary states she came from Tipperary when she was 17. One passenger list for the Arizona which landed on June 20 1887 in NY looks like it might fit. Can't read the age but it has two sisters with her Anna and I think Abina CAHILL. The City of Troy has no records for their marriage there and I have checked the NYC marriages list and can't find anything there. Anyone with any information on CAHILL family from Troy, NY or Margaret in particular I would love to hear from you. Any ideas on where I go from here?
Thanks again to Gay for publishing these notes. Aside from James Barry's Tipperary birth, this was also interesting as a reminder of the great Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919, which took the lives of up to 100 million people (between 3% and 6% of the global population.. In the course of my genealogical research, I had learned that at least a couple of my kin had been among the victims of that pandemic. I suspect most on this list had similar casualties among their antecedents. Though referred to for a while as "the Spanish flu" (only because wartime censorship in many countries largely kept the public in the dark about it's extent and impact until the flu reached Spain, which did not have such censorship), it's origins are still speculative / hypothetical; ranging from arrival by meteorite and (possibly subsequent) bird to pig to human mutations/transmission. But a couple facts are clear. One is that ironically, while most pandemics hit hardest those with compromised / weaker immune systems (such as the elderly, or very young), the 1918 flu's victims were in contrast more often healthy young adults. Their stronger immune responses often led to the pneumonia which killed many including apparently James Barry. Another is that military camps (full of healthy young men in close quarters) experienced significant outbreaks. Fort Riley, Kansas, a large training camp of 30,000 to 50,000 men, reported an outbreak in early March 1918 (the first US case having been reported two months earlier.in a different part of Kansas). It could be concluded that World War I was a significant factor in the spread of the disease and the total numbers killed. If considered in that light, the number of casualties of that war might be triple or more the16 million estimated losses. ~Roger Hoffmann > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Message: 1 > Date: Wed, 29 Apr 2015 12:35:46 -0700 > From: Gay Young <gyoungest@gmail.com> > Subject: [COTIPPERARY] James BARRY > To: CoTipperary-L@rootsweb.com > Message-ID: <796D4614-116A-41E9-B9EA-9A2E3FE7F527@gmail.com> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii > > New Jersey, USA Archives > World War I Casualties > > Name: Barry, James > Age: 25 years 3 months > Number: 553,592 > Organization served in: Co I 4 Inf Co C 1st Bn US Guards, to death > Grade: Pvt > Race: White > Residence: Paterson > Enlisted at: Ft Slocum > Date: 18 april 1917 > Birthplace: Tipperary, Ireland > Cause of Death: Lobar pneumonia, Influenza > Death date: 17 Oct 1918 > Person to notified of death: Sister, Mrs George Hassal, 160 Sherman > Avenue, New York City > > > ------------------------------ > > To contact the COTIPPERARY list administrator, send an email to > COTIPPERARY-admin@rootsweb.com. > > To post a message to the COTIPPERARY mailing list, send an email to > COTIPPERARY@rootsweb.com. > > __________________________________________________________ > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > COTIPPERARY-request@rootsweb.com > with the word "unsubscribe" without the quotes in the subject and the body > of the > email with no additional text. > > > End of COTIPPERARY Digest, Vol 10, Issue 48 > *******************************************
