    3. Hello group, This is a long shot but I figured I would try. William Lonergan had a son named James with Brigid Hamahan on June 5, 1853 which was 3 days before my ancestor, James Gorman, had a son with Mary Dee names William. James & Mary moved to RI, USA and had another son in 1855 with William Lonergan listed as the godfather. I am trying to figure out how they came over from County Tipperary. Specifically, Gammond & Kilcash RC Parish. Thank you, Jim Gorman

    2. Betty Gough via
    3. While we are on the subject of Baptismal records, can I tell you of my great grandmother's children's records. Great gran had 13 children born alive in her marriage. It states this fact in the 1911 census. It also states that 6 are still alive in 1911, at the time of Census taken. Both of these facts are correct. Yet, in the Baptismal records only six of the children are recorded. Five of the ones that lived into old age, and one of the 7 that died very young. When I asked my great aunt, daughter of great gran, she told me that the Parish Priest at the time was a native of great grans home parish, and a great friend of the said great gran. Apparently, he called on her every day for a chat and a glass or two of whisky. She said he would have baptised the children in the house and probably never got around to recording same in the Book! The said priest travelled on horseback. Great grans husband kept him supplied with hay and oats for the horse. What a pity he never recorded these children. Could something like this have happened in other places? Betty

    3. If you click on Irish Ancestors (bottom of page on NLI parish records) you'll see these are the only records available. It could be for any number of reasons: lost/destroyed never recorded the information at the time not microfilmed You can always check the parish to see if they exist anywhere. It's not unusual for parish records to start in the 1830s. Some priests did not keep records. A pastor may have started the practice and then the next pastor abandoned it.  Mary

    3. Hi Cath, When you say "the records" there are two kinds, Civil (the government by registration district) and Church (religious by parish). Civil records did not start in Ireland until 1845. Learn more about those here: http://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/Irish-civil-registration.html The National Library of Ireland just put Parish records on line last week: This is the link for Nenagh Parish, starting as early as 1792. You have to read the records to find what your looking for. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0804 Good luck! Tom wondered about seeing three witnesses at some marriages in the past. Personally, I don't know. Never heard of any particular reason. I imagine the groom and bride wanted more than the usual two witnesses. The third person was probably a relative or friend. Likewise, at Baptism, sponsors were usually two but sometimes only one. I have seen three names, but seldom. Some entries for marriage have names of witnesses that are different to the bride and groom. In those cases one or both may have been an only child. Another reason being that the siblings of one or both have already emigrated. Yet another reason being that the couple are getting married without the approval of family. 1. [COTIPPERARY] Ireland films 1915 & 1974; British Film Institute
    2. Ed Madden via
    3. Hello Tippers! The British Film Institute, BFI has many interesting old news reels and other films. Here are 2 examples regarding Ireland. 1. A simple 1915 newsreel story that reminds us history is never simple. http://player.bfi.org.uk/film/watch-ireland-welcomes-oleary-vc-1915/ Decorated Irish Guardsman Michael O'Leary enjoys a hero's welcome in Dublin, captured in footage filmed with the rough immediacy of the present tense. Within a year, Dublin's Easter Rising would begin the historic chain of events leading to a newly independent nation - forever changing the meaning of images like these. Cork-born O'Leary was one of the most celebrated Irish war combatants, having won the Victoria Cross for singlehandedly taking two German barricades on the Western Front. As suggested here, he and his story were used for recruiting purposes in Ireland, but following independence the British war service of the likes of O'Leary quickly came to be seen as an awkward irrelevance at best. Ireland today is looking afresh at the complex place of World War I in her national story and films like this have their part to play in this fascinating process. NOT BFI. Ireland today has this going on - World War One: Exploring the Irish Experience http://www.nli.ie/en/udlist/current-exhibitions.aspx?article=abc68eeb-0e89-4699-8ddd-fb312e9d1937 http://www.rte.ie/centuryireland/articles/world-war-ireland-exploring-the-irish-experience 2. Ireland - Behind the Wire 1974, 110 mins http://player.bfi.org.uk/film/watch-ireland-behind-the-wire-1974/ The investigative Berwick Street Film Collective were given exclusive access to Belfast's Catholic community. The testimonies and footage of life 'behind the wire' that they captured amounts to a grim but arresting picture of Northern Ireland at the height of The Troubles. One of the Collective's founding members, Marc Karlin, later revealed that the Special Branch seized some of their original footage and the Ministry of Defence pressurised the film technicians' union into erasing some of the frames. Worth spending some time poking around its web site, enjoy! Ed Madden Ridgefield, WA USA
