    1. [COTIPPERARY] Tipp Arrests under Insurrection Act of 1824-part 1
    2. Janet Crawford
    3. The first Insurrection Act was passed shortly after the 1798 Revolution. After that it was withdrawn and re-enacted several times, one being in 1823. In 1824, by way of this act 497 Tipp men were arrested and imprisoned from a day to over a month while awaiting trial. I am only going to show the names and where they were tried: "N" for Nenagh and "C" for Cashel. There is no indication of the residence of the accused. You can either check the EPPI site for some additional information in 1824, Vol. 22 pgs 54-69, or if you write me with the man's name and number, I'll pass on the additional bits, but that would only be the reason they were arrested, the date of the trail, and the number of days they were jailed. It also shows whether they were found Not Guilty or transported, and I'll indicate those few that were indicated as transported; whether or not they actually were is a different matter and unknown. The reasons for the arrests were: Absent from residence - I assume while some mischief went on in the area Tumultuously assembling Having concealed arms Posting threatening notices Circulating sedicious papers. 3. Here's the reply from IFHF to my suggestions regarding the information being offered on-line: Dear Ms. O'Connell Thanks for you kind comments. Our online research service is a new initiative and we are monitoring all comments that we receive regarding the site and its ongoing development from our customers. We plan to place all our member counties' records online as well as a central site with all records. This has to be funded from income. There are also large amounts of data still to be computerized, a time consuming and uneconomic task. Yours sincerely IFHF

    3. Tks Rita - I did submit the records to two sites on my return - They were Tony Riordan's site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~irishchurchrecords/index.html and CMC http://www.cmcrp.net/Tipperary/index.html although I can't pick them up on the second site just quickly - perhaps it was another site. I guess I could send them to a third ... 3. Hi Janet, The Nth Tipp search results certainly look to match the transcribed records the Kilcommon PP copied for me when I visited Tipperary some years back. As a pre-1865 example - Julia CONNELL baptised 10/3/1822, Kilcommon, d/o John Connell & Anne WADE show up in the search results for Kilcommon and there are no other Julia Connells from elsewhere in Nth Tipp for that eight year search period i.e. the name is not that common. Likewise for Henry Connell, 20/1/1842, s/o John and Nancy Wade - another relatively uncommon name that shows up under Kilcommon Parish but nowhere else in Nth Tipp over that eight year period. I suspect 'be in quick' as they may be withdrawn when someone realises they have got in via the back door somehow. Stand back for a "terrific fit"! 1. Re: [COTIPPERARY] Storm buoys off Ireland
    2. Janet Crawford
    3. It was a hurricane, Don, and a very unexpected one. The hours before were unusually still and very warm, and then the storm came roaring in embedded with tornados. Sadly it also stalled over Ireland for hours making things worse. The storm surge along the west coast must have been fierce. Although the hurricane itself was very damaging, it was probably the tornados that did the most localized damage. It was scarier because it came in at night, and for anyone who has been here in the country at night, you know how pitch black the night can be. The blackness of the night and the screaming of the wind had to have been horrifying. 3. Great to see the C&E records on the North Tipp site. My suggestion to them was to enable a search from parents so you can pick up all children from one couple. I also pointed out the cost issue. For me our Pacific Pecos (NZD) make 10 Euros far too expensive (for, really, a bit of a stab in the dark with the common names). A record from the Tipp site will cost me about NZD 20 however on www.scotlandspeople.org.uk I can obtain a copy of the original handwritten entry (baptismal, marriage, census page etc) for about NZD 2.60. Their structure is pay per item which has been fine - a cheaper rate (1 point) for a page of abt 18 search results (you can vary the criteria) and 5 points (NZD 2.60) to view one original document, rather than an annual sub ... very economic shopping! 3. Ted, I goggled the priests' names and found the book "Lives of Irish Martyrs and Confessors" by Miles William Patrick O'Reilly, Richard Brennan & Henry Parnell. There is some mention of Ned Meehan as you read on. Also Sir Edmund Burke, MP wrote to Charles O'Hara in Tipperary on this & other outrageous abuse of the law in Ireland. This was correspondence of Edmund Burke, Volume 1 p.245. Kay -----Original Message----- From: cotipperary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cotipperary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of TED MEEHAN Sent: Tuesday, December 04, 2007 9:17 AM To: cotipperary@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [COTIPPERARY] Research Request Thanks very much Kay. I haven't seen that yet. Was it sent as an e-mail, or do I need to visit a website? I appreciate your taking the time to have done that. I have been seeking out little snippets of information on this case for a number of years, and every now and then it occurs to me that there may still be some fragments that I haven't found yet. Most of the information focuses on Father Sheehy - as is justified by the fact that he was a clerical leader at the time of his execution. Very little is written about Ned Meehan, beyond the fact that he was a farmer, and several short phrases are attributed to him. In trying to deduce as much as possible from the facts that seem established, it would appear that Ned Meehan was a fairly prominent member of the community in his era. It seems only the prominent Catholics were targeted for prosecution by the Tipperary magistrates of that time. And, he may have been one of the organizers of the Clogheen Fair, since he spent an entire night preparing for it in October 1764. We know that he had 6 children, and - from old family records, I know that he was married to Bridget Hogan. The few utterances that are attributed to him come from his reaction to his death sentence and some eloquent words just before his execution. One more item was reported in one treatment of this case - and it referred to what was a common practice by this group of magistrates, according to nearly every history. It was that on the night before Ned's execution, the magistrates came to him and offered him his life if he would perjure himself and testify that Father Sheehy was a French agent. Ned castigated them for trying to tempt him into participating the unjust execution of an innocent man, and told them to leave. The next day, his execution took place. It must have been horrible. He had to wait and watch Father Sheehy die before him. The sentence of being hung, and drawn and quatered, was beyond what anyone in this age would call barbaric. The victim would be hung until they were nearly dead. Then they were cut down. Their bodies were cut open and their genitals removed while they still lived. Then they were beheaded. Finally, their corpses were violated by having their arms and legs cut off. Ned had to watch this happen to his friend Father Sheehy, knowing that he faced the same fate. He also knew that his wife and family watched, as did many of his friends. Once the ordeal was over, the magistrates mounted the heads of Ned Meehan and Father Sheehy onto pikes outside the Clonmel Courthouse, where they remained for 20 years - as a warning to other Catholics. 1. [COTIPPERARY] Any records on schools in Clonmel in the 1850s, 1860s?
    2. I'm looking for student lists or graduations from the 1850s and 1860s. Especially school records for Sts Peter & Paul or St. Mary's Clonmel. Any idea of how or where someone Catholic from Clonmel would have become a teacher during those decades? Also seeking information about the music of the 1850s - 1880. Are there any newspaper articles or historical references with names of musicians or music teachers? Has anyone found any citings of local dances, music sessions, dances at the crossroads, music at weddings, wakes, pubs or concert halls. In the Clonmel vicinity, my guess is that the Hearn's Hotel and St. Mary's were the biggest gathering places. Are there back issues of newpapers from those decades on microfilm anywhere? Did they have a church bulletin or regular diocesan publication? How about the poor law records and workhouse registry? thanks very much, Trish **************************************Check out AOL's list of 2007's hottest products. 3. It was indeed Goosers where I tipped the pint in Ballina and I am quite shocked to find that a parish within sight of the cathedral in Killaloe would be in the C&E Diocese. BTW, my wife asked for a Harp and was told none was available. When I asked what they DID have on tap they told me "Carling Black Lable and Budweiser." Well, we didn't fly all the way from upstate New York just to have an expensive import brew from the USA. Especially not a hoi polloi brewski. After the Guinness I drove across the rickety narrow bridge across the Shannon to Killaloe, with truck traffic headed the other way. THERE is a driving experience somewhat akin to the Connor Pass. Is that bridge a thousand years old? Sure looked it.
