    3. I too would also like to ask a favour of our cousins in Australia. Would one of you be kind enough to collect the many websites kindly being reported in reply to Janet's request, and summarise them for us so that we don't all have to save them individually. Any offers? Those of us who are members of the Guild of One Name Studies (GOONS) are lucky enough to have our own information Store (Wiki). The section on research sources in Australia begins: General National Library of Australia has a webpage of Australian Family History and Genealogy on the Internet, http://www.nla.gov.au/oz/genelist.html http://www.searchwhateveraustralia.com.au/ is "the Australian Genealogy Search Engine and Directory for the most useful Australian and International sites. Lawrence arrived in the US in 1873 and married Mary Delaney the same year. They settled in Boston and had three children, James Joseph; John Patrick and Mary Agnes. Lawrence died in 1920. Mary Delaney's parents were John and Ann Delaney from Dublin. Mary died in 1918. 3. Janet I will try & get something up by Christmas, it is likely that very few returned to Ireland, it has been estimated that only 5% of convicts came back. Your assumption that their families might have followed them is right, as you may know the Colonial Government did pay for family reunions for well behaved convicts, although there were interruptions to the scheme. In one of the important texts on convict history "Convict Society and Its Enemies" by J.B. Hirst he states: "It was the Irish who took most advantage of the opportunity of bringing their wives and children to the colony" he goes on about Irish "clannishness" and " devotion to their priests" and ends this para "Had there been this degree of attachment among the convicts generally, the colony's history might have been very different " This is a subject dear to my heart, thankyou for your interest Robyn

And perhaps part of the genealogy research is our [unrealized] attempt to put the clan back together in some way now that we are spread across the world. Ireland is so small that the clannishness is still very evident. Everybody is related to everyone else in some fashion or another. I can't tell you how many times there has been a name in the news, perhaps from the North, and someone here will immediately identify the person as so and so's brother-in-law or cousin. And the devotion to the priests is easy - they were our brothers and cousins and the familial devotion came easily. Many of us are realizing it was not just part of our family that came to PEI, or somewhere in Australia, or Chicago, but whole related communities that emigrated together to the same place. We took a good part of our clan with us when we left. It has taken a huge population growth and mobility to break the ancient ties of the clan. I think it is true that the clan is gone in the large cities, but remains to some extent in the rural areas. Or am I wrong? Janet Janet

    3. My clan all seemed to end up in San Francisco at the turn of the 19th century after being in other places, such as St. John's. Newfoundland and Illinois. We were a large extended family that seemed to have scattered after WW ll like many families. San Francisco in my childhood days was made up of Irish and Italian neighborhoods that no longer exist. There was a flight to the suburbs and then many just lost touch. The church bells that rang all over the city at noon and 6PM are no longer heard. Many of the churches are closed because of low attendance. Time marches on! 1. [COTIPPERARY] Insurrection Act & Christmas
    2. D and R Hardie
    3. Hi all felt it was time to express my appreciation for these great Tipperary lists and wish all a Merry Christmas. In particular thanks to Janet, Mary & Christine for their energy & generosity. I didn't find any of my rels on the list of men arrested under the Act but was intrigued by the list of transportees, so started having a look at who on the list actually did end up in Australia. So far it looks like 25 of the 35 named as transported were, and in short order; they were almost all agricultural labourers, ploughman, shearers, fencers reapers ( there was one soldier and one indoor servant) and I haven't yet found any other sentence than 7 years which was the shortest given to transportees. Unfortunately the actual 'crime' was often not specified in this period but it's likely that there wasn't violence involved or they would have been given longer sentences. It's an irony that men who were probably protesting about their inability to earn their living because of lack of work were sent to a place where they could be used as cheap labour but where their services were in demand. 3. Thank you, Robyn, for looking up the fate of the transportees. Perhaps when you have finished, you could add an addendum to the Arrests List as to when they arrived where and the length of the sentence. It appears here that most of them were just "absent from home" when some mischief was going on in the neighborhood, and so were implicated in the trouble. It would also be interesting to know if they stayed in Australia or returned back to Ireland, but that might be too much to ask of you, or too hard to determine. I would assume that if they stayed, their family, or part of them, would follow them.
