    1. [COTIPPERARY] 2-8-1850 Tipperary Vindicator.
    2. Mary Heaphy
    3. 2-8-1850 Tipperary Vindicator. Evictions in Tipperary. Friday last the romantic locality of Cullohill, near Borrisoleigh, was the theatre of a most soul harrowing scene. This property has lately come into the possession of Mr. John Parker, of Ballycolliton, near Nenagh, and wishing to get rid of small holdings, and amalgamate farms, he issued an habere; and to carry out his intentions, was on this day accompanied by his brother, and his law agent, Mr. Daxon, of Nenagh. At 8'30 they appeared on the land with a gang of about 20 of the notorious levellers of Nenagh. About 9 O'Clock the worthy sub-inspector, Mr. Malone, with about 40 of his police from different stations was on the spot, and shortly afterwards the sub sheriff Mr. Going, on his way to open the commission in Nenagh, with deputy Mr. Gason, and his chief clerk, Mr. Burrows, also arrived. It was a truly awful sight. The poor rate collector, with his seal of office, and the county cess collector and his staff filled up the awful cavalcade. The place of rendezvous was Cullohill Cross, near Mr. Bourke's residence. Mr. Daxon, the law agent, with Mr. Burrows, the chief clerk, and the "Crowbar Brigade", with half the police, filed to the southern district of the ancient castle and levelled 14 houses, and turned the poor inmates out upon the highways. Messrs Parker, with Mr. Gason, and a party of police under the command of the sub inspector, took the northern district, directing their route towards a rick of turf, in hopes of discovering a nest of arms, but without success, and melancholy to behold, in a few hours 470 human beings were disposed from the town lands of Cullohill, Curragreen, Curraghkeal, Glanarisk, and the bog of Monkenan. Out of the above 470, 229 were readmitted as caretakers, the remaining 241 were left out under the clemency of the weather.

We are sorry to have to state, the following depredations have been committed in the course of last week;- On Tuesday night last, the house of James Looby, of Kilfeacle, was broke open and robbed of 40 guineas. On Wednesday night, the house of John Kennedy of Meugh, was broke open by an armed banditti and robbed of 215/. In cash and bank notes, the earnings of many years honest industry, they treated the poor man, who is near 80 years of age, in the most cruel manner, to make him discover where his money was hidden, and on Thursday night the houses of Hickey and Kierwick, Farmers, were robbed and plundered, all the above are in the same neighbourhood, between Golden and Cappagh, the parties were never concerned in tythes. On Friday night, the house of John Rickham, at Grange turnpike, near Cashel, tythe proctor, was robbed of papers, a gun and two swords. 25-7-1820 Clonmel Assizes. On Thursday evening, Baron M'Clelland and Sergeant Burton arrived here from Waterford, and yesterday at 10 O'Clock, proceed to business. The following convictions have taken place;- Eleanor Sheehy, for robbery, to be confined for 6 months. Mary Warren and Eleanor Bateman, for stealing Bank Notes value, 90/. --to be transported for 7 years. Redmond Connors, for robbery, to be transported for 7 years. Daniel Campion, for conspiring to cheat, by circulating ten penny pieces, to be transported for 7 years. 18-7-1826 Clonmel Advertiser. At the fair of Kilfeacle on Monday, no business was done, on account of a tremendous riot between two factions under the titles of the Hickey's and the Hogan's, each party consisting of between three to four hundred men, armed with muskets, pistols, bayonets, scythes, etc. They had been making preparations for this affray a month before. It appears two men were killed, one a desperate character of the name of Duggan, who had been a corporal in the 34th foot, the one who suffered two years confinement in Clonmel Gaol for an felonious assault on a female child, and who deserted from that regiment since his liberation from prison. Mr. Thompson held an inquest on the body in Tipperary on Monday evening. Another man by the name of Trehy was also killed in the affray at Kilfeacle, and two men, of the names of Carey and Peters (the last named was lately arraigned under a charge of murder, at Clonmel Assizes), were wounded. The military from Tipperary, and the police from different stations, were on the spot in the morning, under the direction of Magistrates, who also attended the fair, to prevent the disorder; but as these went home early, the opposite factions came in contact, and battle and death ensued between the deluded wretches. Several wounded were supposed to have scrambled into the surrounding corn fields, and their numbers or condition were not known at the time our correspondents closed their letters.

    3. >From Assorted Dublin Newspapers, mostly the Freeman. 3-9-1761. A few days ago was married Barrasakane (Borrisokane), in the County of Tipperary, Mr. Thomas Hayes, aged 35 to the Widow Beetle, aged 80, being the ninth time of her entering the Hymeneal state. 6-7-1769. A correspondent in the County Tipperary, has favoured us with the following piece of intelligence;-two reputable widowers of said County, one aged 69, the other 63, having each a good many children, all of whom had been decently provided for, in the matrimonial way, except one daughter each, of about 18 years of age, mutually agreed to intermarry with each others daughters, which they accordingly did a few days ago, with this resolution of living all together in one house, and as an encouragement to propagation, the old veterans have made a bet of one hundred guineas, to be paid to him whose young wife shall soonest make her brother in law a grandfather. 9-12-1769. A few days ago, Cornelius Londrigan, and William Hurigan, both of Graige, in the County of Tipperary, read their recantation from the Church of Rome, in the Parish Church of Rathronan in said County, and embraced the Protestant Religion. 11-2-1763 Last Wednesday night four men with their faces blackened, entered the house of Michael Quielon,(spelled as in paper) near Borrisoleigh, in the County of Tipperary, a poor dealer, and from there stole 16 pieces of linen, of different prices, which had his name in the middle of each piece, together with all his wife's wearing apparel, his hat, wig, and shoes, and after tying him, they took the cash out of his pocket, amounting to 7 shillings, and after severely beating him for having so little money, made off with their booty. 18-7-1789 Married lately at Castle Driscol, in the County of Tipperary, Mr. Egan, aged 98, to Miss Driscoll, aged 13. 29-5-1755 Last week was married at Ballydine, in the County of Tipperary, John Mandeville, of Ballynagh, aged 102, to the daughter of Thomas Mandeville, esq. of the said County, an accomplished young lady, aged sixteen with a fortune of 4000/. 16-3-1756. We hear from Fethard in the County of Tipperary, that on Saturday the 28th February last, a great rumbling noise was heard in the Earth, but did no other damage than throwing down a small bridge, and drying up all the streams on the South side of the town. 19-2-1756 A few days ago William Beere,Esq., of Ballyboy, in the County of Tipperary, aged 85 was married to a widow called Mrs Guard, of Mallow, Co. Cork, aged 91, with a jointure of 700/., per annum. 21-8-1766 Last week died at his seat in the County of Tipperary, Col. Thomas Winsloe, aged 146 years;-He was a Captain in the reign of King Charles the 1st, and came with Oliver Cromwell into Ireland. 28-11-1767 A few days ago was married, at Fethard in the County of Tipperary, Ambrose Dotah, a Beggarman, aged 111, to Mary Stapleton, of the same profession , aged 94. 13-9-1764 Sept 8th. Mathew, Esq., of Thomastown, in the County of Tipperary, to the celebrated Miss Smith, second daughter of James Smith, Esq., one of the representatives of Antrim, with a fortune of 10,000/. Immediately after the ceremony the Countess of Branden presented the bride with a casket of jewels of great value. 31-10-1767 Saturday last John and William Godfrey were executed at Clonmel, for the murder of Timothy Lowry, near Knockadine, in the County of Tipperary, and on Saturday next, Michael Godfrey, the third brother, is to be executed at Tipperary, for the same offence. 13-10-1789 Last Thursday a duel was fought in the Church-Yard of Clonbeg, near Tipperary, between Henry Fitzgerald, of the County of Limerick, and Thomas Laurence, of Nenagh, Esqrs., wherein the latter was dangerously wounded in the thigh by his antagonist's ball, which was endeavoured, though ineffectually, to be extracted. The dispute arose in consequence of an altercation which took place between them a few nights ago. 16-9-1782 Deserted from his Majesty's 93rd Regiment of foot, at Reading, in the County of Berks, John O'Bryan, 19 years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, fair complexion, grey eyes, sandy hair short, born in the County of Tipperary, in the Parish of Cullow, by trade a weaver. 29-4-1782 Clonmel, April 15th. 3. I have come across the death of Thomas Winsloe article previously and am happy to see it again as I had misplaced it. Someone wondered if it was a misprint. It clearly is not, as the date of death and age would certainly put him in the time frame to have ridden with Cromwell in the 1640's. Whether the article is true or not (after all, there were more 100 year olds getting married than Willard Scott's birthday greetings) who can say? Certainly there was no one around who could remember that he WASN'T 146 years old. Very strange, and all the more strange that the original article didn't seem to make a big deal about it, and clearly identified him as one of Cromwell's officers. Anybody research this guy further? Does he appear in any of the lists of officers or land grants from that period? -Squire Bob >21-8-1766 >Last week died at his seat in the County of Tipperary, Col. 3. 5-8-1831 From the Tipperary Free Press. Carrick-on-Suir Meeting to Petition for the total disbandment of the Irish Yeomanry. On Sunday last a numerous and highly respectable meeting of the inhabitants of Carrick-on-Suir took place, at which petitions to both Houses of the Legislature were unanimously adopted, praying for the disbandment of the Irish Yeomanry. The meeting was too large to be held indoors, and was consequently held beneath the friendly shade of the fine elms which adorn the beautiful town residence of Mr. V. O'Donnell. At the hour appointed John Power, Esq. MD, was called to the chair; Edmond Power, Esq. was requested to act as secretary to the meeting, and the following gentlemen were appointed to the committee, James Cantwell, James M. Ryan, John Power, (Carrigbeg), James Prendergast, Valentine O'Donnell, John Rourke, John Boyle, A. O'Riordan, Esqrs; Doctor Shea, and Surgeon Brennan. These gentlemen then retired, but shortly after returned and submitted resolutions to the meeting, all of which were unanimously adopted. Valentine O'Donnell, Esq. was then called to the chair, and thanks being returned to Dr. Power, three hearty cheers were giver for "O'Connell and the Repeal of the Union", after which the meeting separated in the most peaceable and orderly manner. 26-10-1838 From the Tipperary Constitution. On Friday last a letter was directed through the post-office to George Wayland, Esq, of Ballywalter, the father of the young gentleman, who still lingers from wounds received on the morning Mr. Austin Cooper was murdered, threatening him and every member of his family, male and female, with death, unless the persons now in custody for the murder above alluded to were, through his interference, liberated, and all charges dropped. John Ryan (Corbett), supposed to be one of the persons concerned in the murder of the late Austin Cooper, Esq. has been arrested, and fully committed to our county gaol, by B. Nangle, Esq, to abide his trial at the ensuing assizes. At the fair of Borrisoleigh, last August, Michael Magan, Pat Butler and others, waylaid and so severely maltreated John Maher, that he died from injuries on Saturday last: Magan and Butler had been admitted to bail, under a certificate of Maher being out of danger, but upon hearing of the fatal effects of their outrage, they absconded.

    3. Tipperary News 29-9-1834 From the Tipperary Free Press. In one of the most disgraceful and senseless riots at the last fair day of Borrisoleigh, a man was so severely beaten that he died within a few days. Informations were taken against one of his assailants, and a party of friends of the deceased went without a warrant on Saturday last, to Pallace, to take him into custody. In the meantime the opposite got information of the intended arrest, and assembled to protect the accused, a conflict ensued between both parties, and, we regret to state, that one man, a friend to the deceased, named Shanahan, was shot dead on the occasion. Some idea may be formed of the sanguinary disposition of the factions towards each other from the following fact:-On Saturday last a party of Darrigs were conveying one of their faction to the fever hospital in Roscrea, when they were assailed by the Cummin's party, and in the conflict a man's jaw was broken. The Rev. Mr. Birmingham, on the following Sunday, addressed the congregation, and denounced in forcible and becoming language these horrible and unnatural factions, to which he justly attributed the misfortunes of the country. 3-4-1869 Clonmel Chronicle. Intelligence of another fearful murder has just reached Clonmel, The victim-it is believed-of agrarian revenge, is Richard Toppin, highly respected by all who knew him. He had recently purchased some property in the vicinity of his residence, near Buffana, within three miles of Fethard, and last evening, it would appear, Mr. Toppin left his residence to visit a part of his farm, and was not afterwards seen alive. A close search having been made, the unfortunate man was found lying murdered, inside the wood of Buffana, Upon examining the body it was found that he had been shot from behind. A report of the outrage has been delivered to the coroner for the district, James J. Shee, Esq. J.P. The news of this awful occurrence, which was conveyed to this town by two of the neighbouring magistracy, has caused the utmost consternation. It furnishes another sad evidence of the present alarming disorganization of society, and of the insecurity of life. 20-3-1874 From the Freeman's Journal. Thomas O'Meara, Esq, coroner of this district held an inquest at Two-Mile-Borris, about three miles from Thurles, on the body of a labouring man named Thomas Hennessy. It appears that the deceased was drinking all day on St. Patrick's day, and in the evening found his way into a forge, where he was found dead the following morning. The Jury returned a verdict that the deceased died from the effects of drink. 19-3-1830 From the Freeman's Journal. O'Connell Fund. The Rev. M. Slattery, in a letter to Mr. Dwyer, secretary, states. "I think it is necessary to remark, that many persons in my parish of Borrisoleigh, Co. Tipperary, have not as yet paid their subscriptions; however, I suppose they intend to do so, and I shall have pleasure in transmitting the same to you to assist in raising the well earned tribute to the !Man of the People!-a tribute which, I trust, will be such as to reflect honour on our character as a nation and worthy of his acceptance. The subscribers as follows:- Rev. Mr. Slattery, P.P. Rev. Mr. Morris, Patrick Ryan, Richard Bourke, Philip Fogarty, Mrs William Cooke, Mr. Simon Hanly, William Dwyer, James Chadwick, Richard Chadwick, Patrick Ryan, Philip Ryan, Michael Guilmartin, Doctor Kelly, Thomas Hely, John Gleeson, James Ryan, Andy Ryan, Paddy Ryan, William Ryan, Anne Chadwick, John Burke, Mrs. John Duan, Mrs Cooke, James Condon, Joseph Ryan, Joseph Harrington, Philip Carroll, Stephen Ryan, Michael Fitzpatrick, James Small, Rody Ryan, James Beevan, Andy Molony, James Finn, Patrick Kennedy, John Carroll, Martin Ryan, Michael Kenny, William Fanning, Sarah Ryan, John Kennedy, Bob Hortnet. James Ryan. 21-6-1839 Freeman's Journal. A statement appeared a few days since in that journal of fabrication notoriety, the Nenagh Guardian, to the effect that the Catholic Clergyman, at a place called Two Mile Borris, had threatened that he would not baptize the children of those who would vote contrary to his wishes. One would think it scarcely necessary to contradict so palpable and absurd a falsehood, but the Catholic Clergyman so foully calumniated has come forward, and with just indignation repudiates the ridiculous aspersion. 25-7-1882 Freeman's Journal. Cashel. Today two men named Philip Brady, jnr, and Michael Brady, of Ballinure, near Cashel, were brought before Mr. Darby Scally, J.P. Silverfort, charged, on sworn information, with having mowed a large quantity of potato stalks, the property of J. Kendrick, Ballinure, on the 22nd inst, at Ballinure, also with sending Kendrick a threatening letter calling him a land grabber, etc. They were committed for trial. Kendrick is residing on a farm that was surrendered to the Landlord. Roscrea. At the petty sessions today, a shopkeeper named John Maher was brought up under the Prevention of Crimes Act, charged with being on the streets at unreasonable hours on the night of Wednesday last. The circumstances of his arrest have already appeared in an earlier edition of the Freeman. The chairman, Mr. Vaughan, stated that he had a letter from Captain Slacke, the newly appointed special resident magistrate, to the effect that he had to attend elsewhere that day, and as a consequence Mr. Maher should be released. The announcement was greeted with cheers, whereupon Mr. Vaughan added that Captain Slacke had stated to him that is was fortunate for Mr. Maher that the case did not go on. 19-12-1862 Freeman's Journal. Thurles, Dec. 18th. A young man, a farmer, named John Ryan, was killed at a hurling match on Sunday at Two-Mile-Borris. It appears that a scramble for the ball in a ditch took place between John Ryan and Edmund Hackett, when the latter struck Ryan on the head, fracturing his skull, and knocking him down, when down he received another blow, causing another fracture, the effects of which he died in a few hours. An inquest was held on the deceased and a verdict returned that he died from wounds to the head given to him by Edmund Hackett, and another John Ryan. Hackett was arrested in Queenstown, while trying to make his escape to America. John Ryan (2nd) has absconded. A serious outrage took place near Borrisoleigh on Monday evening. It appears that a farmer named William Benson and his son Martin were attacked on the road by three men, named Leahy, Ryan , and Kelly, Dromgoole, who inflicted serious injuries with stones on the heads of Benson and his son. The former's life is pronounced in danger by a medical man. In a short time after the occurrence two of the attacking party were arrested by police and committed to the Templemore Bridewell. The Kelly's having purchased a farm to which the Benson's were in treaty, is supposed to be the cause of this attack, a very bad feeling existing between them.

    2. Peter: No, probably nothing you don't already know!? I am interested in his wife, Eliza Langley.? I just started wandering around all those folks making connections to the Powell family.? In your gravestones, right above the Hunt family, are a number of listings for the Hobbs family, who married into both the Powell and Keays families that I am interested in, as well as the Acheson family (incorrectly labelled Acherson in that website).? It was actually the puzzle of how those 2 Acheson women (Jane Kennedy whose mother was Susan Acheson and Sarah Acheson) from south Waterford wound up marrying those 2 Powell brothers in N. Tipperary that got me started on this search.? Still have never solved that puzzle, but I'm just as obsessed as ever!? Now I just dump them all into a database.? My real goal is to find if there is a connection between the Powell family in Clonshavoy, Co. Limerick and the Powell family in that N. Tipp area, and the Powell family I find around Obriensbridge.?
