Just a guess here, but could Clara perhaps be Clare More, a townland of about 266 acres in the civil parish of Kiltinan, Poor Law Union of Clonmel in Tipperary, South Riding? The civil parish of Kiltinan is actually split between the PLU of Clonmel and that of Cashel. Griffith's Valuation shows both a Clare More (266 acres) and a Clare Beg (73 acres). I have noticed that it is common in Catholic parish registers to drop the More when referring to the larger townland of a More/Beg pair. This happens in Tipperary N.R. with Dromard More and Dromard Beg in the civil parish of Killavinoge and in neighboring County Laois with Grange More and Grange Beg in Aghaboe parish. So maybe people would have said Clara in this case, which could sound like Clare. If you google "Richard Pennefather" Clonmel and select the result titled "The Gentleman's Magazine - Google Books Result 1849", you will find an article about the death of a Richard Pennefather who was one of the guardians of the Clonmel Union. He was also a high sheriff of County Tipperary in 1840 [see http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Galway/1840/NOV.html]. His estate was at Kilteevan, in the civil parish of Newchapel, which is quite close to Kiltinan. There were many other men named Richard Pennefather, so this might not be the right one, but it seems to make sense in this situation. The surnames Wall and Meagher appear on the Tithe applotments for Kiltinan Civil parish online at http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/tipp/KiltinanTithes.htm . Maher/Meagher is a very common name in Tipperary, so it will be more difficult to pinpoint without the more unusual Wall. My husband has Walls associated with his Barry family (along the Limerick-Cork border, near Charleville) and I have Mahers in my lineage - my ggg-gmother was Bridget Maher (wife of Edward Harrold), from along the Tipperary-Laois border Geralyn Wood Barry in Oregon MForman wrote: > Having received some great assistance a while ago from members of the list > regarding my O'Brien family from Ballywire I am hoping I may have similar > good fortune concerning some of my wife's ancestors. > > William Charles WALL arrived in NSW in 1841 on the ship Forth together with > his wife Mary. 1-5-1848 From the Tipperary Vindicator. At length, thank Heaven, Ireland is aroused. The energies of this old Irish nation are at last awakened-the ardent hopes and fond aspirations of the people are soon to be realised by the achievement of that constitutional freedom for which we have so long and so determinedly toiled. Another year must not pass before we shall have gained for Ireland a national parliament, presiding over national institutions-infusing new life and vigour into the national energies, and basing its strength on the policy of Ireland for the Irish. From a series of events, unparalleled in the history of the world, a great crisis has come upon us. To the exigencies of the hour we trust and believe Irishmen will be found equal. This is no time for the Whigs to be hypocritically prating of augmented "franchises", increased "representatives", convenient "polling booths". etc, etc,. But this is a time for Ireland to work out with a fearless and bold resolve, the entire emancipation of this, our beloved country, from the machinations by which Whiggism has beset it. To the task, then-let us set ourselves in right earnest. Amongst all the projects which have been placed before the public mind, we confess we see but one which can save the country from the imminent perils by which it is menaced. Young and enthusiastic men have adopted a policy upon which, now that we are gagged by "law", we can, of course, offer no opinion. But our "rulers" have adopted measures, which, notwithstanding the aforesaid "law", we must denounce as traitorous to the Kingdom.--We are firmly resolved to bring the present ministry, and every other ministry that will not concede the rights of Ireland, to a sense of what public opinion pronounces in their regard. No matter what courses others may adopt, we still cling to the great teachings of our departed Leader, constitutional efforts for freedom, at the same time we are thoroughly convinced that these exertions must be characterised by a steady, resolute, and unwavering determination. As the advocate of moral means alone for the attainment of our objects, we at once declare that this national council appears to our judgement as the only legal means by which this Kingdom can be raised up to the high and proud position which God and nature intended she should enjoy. To save this land from civil war-which otherwise we tremble to think is inevitable--we counsel this great national movement. The recent effort of Lord John Russell to intimidate the people by declaring, that whilst life was left him he would resist the Repeal of the Union, has for ever annihilated any hope of obtaining justice -viz., Repeal from the English parliament. To the Queen of Ireland we are about appealing- but after all the great hope of Ireland is the Irishmen themselves. Let Irishmen of all creeds, classes, and sections--Protestants, Catholic, and Presbyterian-- Young and Old Ireland---meet together, and resolve what is to be done for the salvation of our native land. Let them meet within the limits of our constitution--beyond the powers of the law, but let them meet resolved that Ireland must have her rights. Let these Irish Gentlemen meet in Dublin, or in Kilkenny, or in Limerick--not as delegates or representatives, (that might be "illegal"), but in the words of O'Connell, "merely happening to come together by accident". We are glad that the Repeal Association has taken steps for having this project carried into practical operation. We understand it can be accomplished without any violation of the law. But the mere possibility of a prosecution should be no justification for abandoning the movement. By the state trials the legality of the association was itself demonstrated, should the government attempt a prosecution they will, we feel convinced, succeed in establishing the legality of the national assembly. Here, then, is a great national effort in which all Irishmen can combine. May God prosper it.
20-4-1882 Clonmel Chronicle Evictions at Clooneyharp and Clonoulty. Special Telegram. Cashel, Wednesday. Today Gerald Fitzgerald, Es. Sub-Sheriff, County Tipperary, accompanied by Sub-Inspector Henry H. Jones, Cashel, and a large force of constabulary, a company of the 48th Regiment, Tipperary, all under the control of Albert J. Meldon, R.M. Tipperary, evicted five tenants, namely, Patrick Molony, Jeremiah Ryan, Mary Ryan, John Murphy. Michael Quirk, another tenant paid. Mary Ryan was let in again as caretaker. All the tenants lived on the property of Mr. W. Jones, Monkstown. Possession was given to William Ryan, the landlord's representative.
28-11-1856 From the Clonmel Chronicle. James Brian, who is charged with the homicide of John Fitzgerald, at Emly, on the 24th August last, was lodged by a strong escort of police, in Tipperary Bridewell on Tuesday. He escaped the vigilance of the police for the last three months, but was ultimately apprehended on Saturday night last at Ballylanders, in the County Limerick. On Saturday night last, the 22nd inst, as Mrs O'Gorman, of Kilmoyler, was on her way home from Clonmel, she was met within a mile of Caher by a party of three to four men, who attempted to stop the car upon which she was travelling. Her servant boy whipped on the horse at a smart gallop, and soon left the party at the rear, on which one of them, who was armed with a gun, immediately fired a shot after the car, but fortunately without doing any injury. On Thursday evening last, the Post Office at Bansha was entered through the window, the shutter of which had been removed by force, and some panes of glass broken. The party, on effecting an entrance, robbed the office of a several American and other letters, together with a quantity of leather and other shop goods, the property of the Post Master John Sheill. Four parties were arrested on suspicion of having committed the robbery, and one of them having turned approver, they were committed for trial at the next Quarter Sessions, to be held at Cashel.
9-9-1856 Clonmel Chronicle. On the 13th September 1854, an inquest was held before Thomas O'Meara, Esq. Coroner for the district of Tipperary, on the body of a man named Thomas Dwyer, of Refadda, who died in consequence of wounds received on the right side of the head, and which fractured his skull, on the 2nd of the same month, at Garryshane, in the south riding of this county. From the evidence adduced at the inquest, it appeared that the deceased was returning home after being paid some money, he was overtaken by two men named Thomas Dwyer, of Donaskea, and William Loughnane, alias Davern. They induced the unfortunate man to accompany them down a bye-road, and when he was next seen the men had fled, and Dwyer was found lying by the side of the road, bleeding profusely. The Coroner's jury returned as their verdict that "the deceased man received several blows of stones or other blunt instruments, of which injuries he lingered until he languished and died on Saturday, 9th Sept, 1854, and that said injuries were wilfully and maliciously inflicted by Thomas Dwyer, of Donaskea, aided and abetted by William Loughnane." As Sub-Constable John F. Noble, of the constabulary depot, Phoenix Park, and who was stationed in 1854 in the neighbourhood where the above murder was committed, was passing along the quays of Dublin he perceived a man whom he instantly recognised as the Thomas Dwyer named in the Coroner's warrant. The man was arrested, and has since been committed by Major Brownrigg, Inspector General of Prisons, to Clonmel gaol, where he now awaits his trial at the Spring assizes of 1857.

This discussion is certainly pertainent to genealogy and many on this list seem to be curious as to why the RC Chuch has been so negative about letting us see "their" records. It seems by this article that I and others who have believed this for years have been correct. This goes against the agreement by the LDS and the Vatican back in the 1980's to let the LDS film the parish registers where ever the church "owns" the records. In return, the LDS promised and delivered free copies to the vatican. But as we all know, the real power lies in the local diocese and some complied with the agreement, and others did not. The reason(s) for those that did not, one being Cashel & Emly, is the whole point of this discussion. cotipperary@rootsweb.com wrote: < For those of you who may not know, the church records that are kept in the National Library are direct copies of the original manuscripts. That is, they are mostly written in Latin. I found the handwriting very difficult to read. I did my Cashel & Emly research, many years before the A.B. came to the position he still holds. (He came from the Kerry diocese). Because these records were photographed for microfilm many years ago, before we had the technology we have today, they are rather fuzzy. What I am saying is, it is a long and tedious task to try and read through them. Each cert. is reproduced in full. Some have comments like pauper, refering to the parents of the child. Some have illegitimate, refering to the child. Personally, I am of the opinion that the church is reluctant to let us see what some priests wrote on those certs at that time. Some of the remarks would be so un-PC today. Unless you have endless time to spend in the National Library in Dublin, I would suggest that you apply to the Excel centre in Tipperary town for the Cashel & Emly records. For North Tipperary to the Genealogical Centre in the Heritage Centre in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. Part of Cashel & Emly is in North Tipperary. I am not trying to influence anyone, all I am saying is that if time is scarce, you would be better off paying the fees and getting the work done for you. I don't know what the delay factor is in the centres. Do your homework well in advance of coming here on holiday. There is a huge demand for this material, and there can be long delay factors. Happy searching, wishing you all good results. When you do find the area you are looking for, locate the local historians. Don't settle for one person, that way you will get a wider picture. And, lastly, do have a good time when you come to Ireland. Bee. < < < Today's Topics: < < 1. Re: Cashel & Emly Records (DP & EM O Connell) < 2. Thanks Janet. Could be another parish. Their son John Joseph Dwyer, born in Nov 1987 married Ellen Hanley from Ballycohy. They were married in Providence, RI but family legend says they were from the Tipperary Town area. Other children of theirs, siblings of John Joseph born in Tipperary are Winifred Dwyer, Anne Dwyer, Catherine (born in 1881), Thomas (born in 1883, Philip (born in 1885) and Margaret born in 1886. Since the Dwyer and Humphries names were in the Lattin list I was hoping for a hit. Too true .. but moving on ... this is tremendous news for those with access to Dublin but for the rest of us .. where to from here? Huge thanks to Janet for her great generosity and time involved with listing all her Lattin/Cullen research - I'm sure there are many gold mines in those records for some. Do we know whether the LDS will release the C&E / Cloyne / Kerry records on their familysearch website? I understand they have the films already so perhaps this is not a big jump, or do they all have to still be entered into their computer database for on-line access? Does anyone know a time frame? I'm particularly interested in the Kilcommon parish in Cashel & Emly and also I have two branches from Co Kerry so, potentially, a couple of brick walls have come down .. just hope I can jump through them from here! Janet, since you are stopping at 1880, I am looking for a marriage that would have happened after that date between Thomas J. Dwyer & Catherine Humphries No later than 1883.
