Hello Tippers! Here are three websites that may be of interest. Histpop is super good with links to original documents! 1. Histpop http://www.histpop.org/ohpr/servlet/Show?page=Home The Online Historical Population Reports; A collection of British Historical Population Reports provides online access to the complete British population reports for Britain and Ireland from 1801 to 1937. The collection goes far beyond the basic population reports with a wealth of textual and statistical material which provide an in-depth view of the economy, society (through births, deaths and marriages) and medicine during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. These 200,000 pages of census and registration material for the British Isles are supported by numerous ancillary documents from The National Archives, critical essays and transcriptions of important legislation which provide an aid to understanding the context, content and creation of the collection. 2. StatCentral http://www.statcentral.ie is the portal to Ireland's Official Statistics. It provides information about statistics produced by government departments and state organisations. The site is maintained by the Central Statistics Office (CSO). 3. Central Statistics Office (CSO) http://www.cso.ie best regards, Ed Madden Ridgefield, WA
Hello all Came across this letter in yesterday's Irish Times and thought it might be of interest. From Prof Pádraig Ó Macháin School of Celtic Studies Dublin Institute of Advanced Studies. He talks about Queen Elizabeth 1's Irish Primer, a facsimile of which was presented to Queen Elizabeth 11 on her recent visit here and points out that the Primer with commentary may be viewed at this site www.isos.dias.ie. There are also a number of interesting Gaelic manuscripts available at this site that may be of interest. Regards Clare -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. Tipperary News from assorted Newspapers. 5th Feb. 1838. Murder-On Thursday last an inquest was held at Tipperary, before Michael Cormick, esq., Coroner, on the body of James Hayes, who was murdered near this town, when a verdict of Wilful Murder as returned against 11 men, who were arrested and committed to Clonmel Gaol. A process server of the name of Patrick Cooney, was murdered near Killenaule, had an inquest held on his body on Tuesday at the four roads. It appears he went for the purpose of executing a civil bill decree, when he was knocked down and beaten with a spade handle. Cornelius Burke, Denis Gleeson, Wm. Gleeson, Thomas Gleeson, Denis Gleeson, Jnr., John Batters, James Grough, Laurence Burke, Robin Horan, and William Gleeson, Jnr., were on Tuesday committed to our County Gaol, charged with aiding in the murder of James Hayes. There are now in the Gaol and House of Correction 455 prisoners, 164 of whom are for trial at the next assizes, and of which number there are 66 charged with the high offence of murder. 6th November 1815. On Wednesday last, in the middle of the day, a large party of men, armed, assembled in the neighbourhood of Rehill, and robbed Mr. Meagher, of Rehill Lodge, and a number of other persons in that neighbourhood, of their arms. On Thursday last, in the middle of the day, a party of eight men, armed, attacked the house of Mr. John Beere, at Scart, between Cahir and Clogheen, for the purpose of taking his arms. Mr. Beere, however, with laudable determination not to submit to those lawless ruffians, sallied out upon them, and with the assistance of his three brothers, most bravely encountered the assassins, when, after a discharge of a number of shots on both sides, the villains fled, leaving one of their party wounded behind them, who was brought into Clogheen, and is now in custody there. 7th April 1826. On Tuesday Martin Croagh was tried for uttering and having in his possession false and counterfeit sovereigns. On examination of the pieces by Mr. Harkness, Assay-Master for the Bank of Ireland, they were ascertained to be farthings gilt over, which, not being false money, and sovereigns not being mentioned in the Act of Parliament that forbids the defacing or altering the appearance of copper money so as to make them resemble certain pieces of other coin, the Court postponed judgement on the prisoner, (being found guilty) till his Lordship shall have obtained the opinion of the twelve judges on the case, expressing at the same time its determination to suggest to the Legislature an amendment of the law on this subject. 7th December 1821. The first subscription, on the part of the neighbouring Gentry, towards the discovery of the monsters concerned in the burning and murder at Tubber, appears in this day’s publication. We have no doubt it will increase to an ample endowment for the first person who, being a competent witness, will avail himself of the opportunity of bringing the most atrocious of villains to justice. The barn, etc, burnt at Killemry on Monday night was the property of Richard Shea, a miller, and on the estate of Sir William Cuffe. There is no doubt that is was a malicious burning. Richard Shea was not a relative of those destroyed at Tubber. On Wednesday night a paper was affixed to the Post-Office of Clonmel, mentioning that many proclamations, besides the one offering rewards for the discovery of the outrage at Tubber, would be necessary. That same night water was poured into the receiver of the said Post Office, to the injury of several letters therein deposited. -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. Hello Jenny: Thank you for responding. Yes, I'd be interested in that Father Fogarty photograph and the poetry. My g-grandfather, Andrew Fogarty and his three siblings, including his eldest brother Matthew were all born in Aghabeg, Co. Kerry and baptized in Lixnaw Parish. We know the family name originated in Tipperary but we cannot find the birthplace of their parents, John and Elizabeth (Costello). Andrew's sister Johanna also came to Ontario, Canada but we know nothing more of Matthew and John. Who knows whether or not we are distantly related to this well respected Priest? It's nice to know he lived his vocation in what has been described as "the world's most beautiful country." Whenever I think of New Zealand, I remember, while escorting Rotary Exchange Students from Eastern North America in 1988 and gazing at the "long white cloud" from above, the United Airlines flight captain came on the p.a. and said "we're on the approach into Auckland, NZ. You can now set your watches back 20 years". I thought it was a real compliment. Thanks again. Andy > Hello Andy, > Long shot I know but you mentioned FOGARTY of Kerry. Just in case you have > a > connection - > Father Matthew (Matt) J FOGARTY was born 1885 and grew up in Gortnaho Co > Tipperary. I have added the following civil parish tithe indexes to the County Tipperary section of my website: Killoscully Killoskehan (3rd book) Don't forget to read my transcription notes. I had a hard time with Killoscully because the handwriting was so bad. Looked like chicken scratch! -- Pat Connors, Sacramento CA http://www.connorsgenealogy.com
Sorry, I typed the station wrong in the subject on the original post. Janet
If you can get RTE1 on a live stream on your pc, at 5:15 pm tonight EDT, or 10:15 pm in Ireland, you will be able to see the concert in Dublin that Queen Elizabeth II is hosting for a small group of 3,000. It will be very Irish and very good. Janet
