Hi Kathleen My first relook would be what religion that early marriage was and if you can look at that record to see if he belonged to that church? It would eliminate a huge amount of looking if he happened to be C of I. Della Palmer -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] Sent: Monday, 1 August 2011 5:58 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [COTIPPERARY] Roll Call - John J. Ryan I have hesitated to write as I have so little information on my great-grandfather, John J. Ryan (John Joseph Ryan I believe is his full name). But since three of my sisters will visit Ireland in September, I thought I would send a query and see if anyone can help break through this solid brick wall. Family lore says that John was from Tipperary, Ireland (birth certificates of children say he was born in Ireland). I realize that with such a common name and no specific city, and no exact date of birth, it may be impossible to trace his lineage. (Another uncle thought he might have been from Cork, but he was relying on childhood memories, and most others in the family say Tipperary.) He may have had a sister, Mary, and a brother, or brother-in-law named Daniel, and possibly a nephew Tom. What we do know is that around 1888 he married Margaret (Maggie) McDonald [born February 12, 1867 in Canada). His first daughter was Mary Francis, born in Michigan (city not known) on December 12, 1889. The family later moved to Ironwood, MI where Grayce Helen was born on December 15, 1891, and John Andrew was born on June 5, 1894. Grayce was baptized at St. Ambrose Church in Ironwood. Her birth certificates state that John was a miner, but it is not known which mine he worked at. The family next moved to Butte, MT where John secured another mining job and his son Daniel Hennessy was born on January 16, 1895 . John died in 1900 and is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, part of Holy Cross Cemetery, in Butte, Montana, Silver Bow County, State of Montana, USA. His age at death was 46, which makes his birth year either 1853 or 1854. If anyone can offer any assistance, I will be extremely grateful. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Kathleen, If your gr-grandfather was a miner, he may well have worked in the mines around Silvermines in the North Riding, and he may have worked in the mines in Co. Cork as well. Please take a few minutes and search the archives for this list [link below] for miners, and also check the archives of the Waterford list at http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/IRL-WATERFORD.html I know there is a good bit of information on miners there. Also check the archives of the Beara, Co. Cork list at http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/Beara.html Miners went where there was work and were far more mobile than one would think. To those researching ROE. In a recent discussion with a 3rd cousin, she mentioned that the Landholder where her ancestors lived at the time of the 1901 Census was W. L. Roe, Surg. Genl. The location of the property was Loran, Bourney East, Roscrea, Tipperary (North Riding). Dear Allison,I know you posted some time ago but I am just now getting to my e-mail. When we were in Tipperary several years ago we met Eugene Short in Thurles. He is a lovely man and was very helpful to me in searching for our Ryan's. He even found the home that my husband's great grandmother lived in, which is still standing. He may be part of your Shortt family and I will be happy to give you his address if you would e-mail me at my personal e-mail. Alison, I have the Bradshaw RC records for Pallas if those will help you at all. They would also be your relatives as of some unknown date. Despite having about 100 pages on Roe, I don't have the Laois records and would love to supplement that file. When you have time, contact me directly and we can trade info. Hi all - I too am a lurker. I enjoy reading other people's posts, but being bogged down with trying to tidy up my own numerous notes and bits of trees, I have not been able to offer any assistance or help or ideas to anyone. There are some supremely talented and knowledgeable people on this site - well done to all of you. Most of my Roe clan lived in co Laois, but they are related to the ones who lived around Tipperary town and Cashel - many generations ago. I think Janet has done some work for a distant cousin of mine in California - think we worked out to be about 8th cousins. My Shortt and Bradshaw ancestors lived at Pallas, near Toomevara in early 1800s, and I would love to know if anyone has any connections. They would have been C of I (as are the Roe clan). The Fry family that I am seeking is Rev. William Baker Fry (1788 -1876) and his wife Jane Anne Roe (1796-1875). He was originally from Boyle, Co Roscommon and she was from near Rathdowney, Co Laois. They had a pile of children and we have been able to trace some of the lines, but there are sure to be some others that lay undiscovered. Thanks for any help. Regards Alison

Hello Della, I have never come across Kairn or Kairns in any of my Kearns research and I do not know of any Kearns connections outside Tipp. I had a quick look on IFHF for Kairn and Kairns got following results. All Counties - exact spelling search - Kairn (1) Kairns (22).Some of these are in Co Wicklow. All Counties - Standard Surname search - (6550) the vast majority of these 6550 are Kearns so IFHF consider Kairn Kairns derivatives of the standard surname Kearns which explains your findings in Victoria. These variations usually occur through pronunciation. My family have always pronounced Kearns as "Kerns" but others have pronounced it as Cairns/Kairns or K(ear)ns many many times resulting in it being written incorrectly. I will post my Kearns Roll-call as a seperate email. I am researching Hanrahan's in Victoria Australia.n Hence reading your message. This lead me to a marriage to the KAIRN family who immigrated with the name KAIRNS And I have just found the 2nd Great grandfather was christened as Michael KEARNS 1825 in Wicklow. As this is the exact spelling of your name I am wondering if there was any connection? He seemed to have a brother Francis who kept spelling his name KEARNS, 9 children born in Wicklow. None of the large family in Australia spell their name this way!!!! Love to hear your thoughts on this. It might be helpful to add that Andrew & Catherine Ryan Hogan settled in Greece, Monroe Co. NY near Lake Ontario in 1849. They are buried there in Mother of Sorrows Cemetery. Elaine Farnan Hall [email protected]
