    1. [COTIPPERARY] Gibbs Family
    2. Annette Gibbs
    3. Hi, I have reached a brick wall with my husband's ancestor Patrick Gibbs. He is from Killurney, County Tipperary. He married Anastasia McGrath around 1842/43. Their first two children were named William Gibbs (b. 1843, must have died young) and William (b. 15 Jan 1844). That makes me think Patrick's father must have been William. However, when I go to the IFHC site and put in Patrick Gibbs, there are several born in the early 1800's and none of them have the father William (in fact, I don't know who the father is as it does not list him, unless I buy the record). There are several Patrick Gibbs born in that timeframe and I don't know which one he is. There appears to be a Patrick Gibbs that died in 1885 (born 1820) and it was reported in Clonmel. So that is most likely him. If I order the death record, will that give me more information? If so, how can I order the record. Does anyone have any advice on how I can find out more information about Patrick and his parents? Thanks, Annette

    3. In Ireland a parish covers more than 1 church, check this map showing Catholic parishes http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/rcmaps/tipperarynrc.htm Click on a parish and it shows what civil parishes are in RC parish. As it is near the Galway border if you can't find anything that may be another option. In one of the parishes I looked at there were 5 churches but all entries are in the one book - a number of entries from one area and then next lot from a different place. Brenda, Melbourne. 3. Joanne, there are 5 Edmond, Edmund or Edward Reardon's. In addition there are 3 Edmond Riordan's. All are in my wife's tree. I will give you the lineup and some other info. Edmond Riordan, b 1781 in Ireland, m Catherine MacMahon about 1809 in Ireland; died 17 May 1829 in Co. Tipperary Ireland (grave marker in Solohead/Oola RC Cemetery next to St. Nicholas RC Church in Solohead, Co. Tipperary His 5th Child-Edmond Riordan was born on 12 June 1824. Baptism records show is was baptized in Solohead Parish-Sponsors were Honor Devereux & John Leamy. Edmond Riordan/Reardon was born on 26 May 1813 in Co. Tipperary. Parents were Dermot Riordan & Mary Meagher. He was baptized in Solohead Parish; sponsors were Edmund & Catherine Trihy. This Edmond is my wife's ggg grandfather. He was married on 18 Feb 1846 to Johanna/Joanna Breen (Brien/O'Brien). Their children were: John James Reardon-12 Oct 1846 Jeremiah Reardon-8 Apr 1848 (my wife's gg grandfather) Edmond Reardon-16 May 1849 (records in the states do not match up, but I think he fibbed when he got married. Mary Riordan-28 Dec 1859 (Married William Hanley, they lived in the townland of Ballycohy near Tipperary Town. Johanna/Hannah Riordan-24 Feb 1853 Thomas Reardon-28 Feb 1854 The 4 Reardon brothers lived in either Mass or R.I. after coming to the states. Edmond married Mary Elizabeth Murray in E. Providence on 28 Apr 1885 . Their first child Elizabeth was born in July 1886. She died after giving birth to Edmond Jr on 30 Dec 1888. Edmond Jr was born on 19 Dec 1888 and died on 9 July 1889 in Arlington, MA. John James Reardon married Johanna Dwyer in Providence on 11 Oct 1874. Johanna was born in Co. Tipperary in 1853 and emigrated to the U.S. at the age of 13 in Aug 1866. I have her parents as Edward Dwyer & Catherine. The first child of John & Johanna was Edmond Vincent Reardon, b 18 Jul 1875 in Providence, R.I. He married Alice Louise Clark about 1908 in Providence and died in 1931 in Providence. Edmond Vincent & Alice's 4th child was Edward V. Reardon b 8 Oct 1915 in Providence. Edward V. married Catherine Reagan on 21 Nov 1953 in Pawtucket, R.I. He died in Jan 1976 in Providence. There first and only child was also Edward V. Reardon born on 28 Oct 1954 in Rhode Island. He is a practicing DO in the Providence, Warwick R.I. area. I think I covered them all. Now maybe you can connect some dots. The names do offer promise, but........ Carmen D. 3. Hi Joanne, As Carmen said, it is Emly, Co. Tipperary. Emly won the Tidiest Town contest last year and yu should be able to find pictures on the net. The records would be available on film at the National Library in Dublin, or you could go through the Tipperary Family History Research group in the Excel Center in Tipperary Town. http://www.tfhr.org/ Or you get get the civil records for any baptism or marriage after 1864: Civil Registration Office - Births, Marriages & Deaths Community Services, Western Road, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary Opening Hours: 09:30-16:00 Mon-Fri Phone: 052-77204 / 052-77205 Or, and this is a last resort option, you can write to the local Emly priest. Most likely the records will only give the parent's names, although the civil marriage records will likely give the two father's occupations and no mother's name. 3. Hi John Newspapers are about your best bet for Irish trial reports, I assume you are in OZ, if you are in Canberra the National Library has the Dublin Freeman's Journal but not on Trove. Also there are some digitised newspapers available now at www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk which I believe has the Freeman's Journal but there is a charge I think. The transportation database is incomplete, it can be a great source if you are lucky but only ever covers details of trials in correspondence about petitions for clemency etc. Unfortunately in its present state it is very unwieldy, why O why have they changed this ! 3. John Unfortunately the National Archives have changed their website and the former Ireland Australia transportation database is not available for the moment . There is a .csv file of the database available but I don't know how to search it properly. You will find the link to this file on the home page of the Archives website under Women's history and transportation resources. If you can search it and find the correct Denis Shanahan there may be a reference to a CRF file that sometimes may give more information. I did find a Denis Shanahan from Tipperary transported on the Hulk Surprise 7 Aug 1836 but it doesn't match your details. Newpapers of the time may not have specific details of outcomes of trials often they just note that transportation sentences were given but not mention names. Have you got all his Australian records as sometimes they give more information. Not sure if this helps. 3. Pre 1836 The fire in the Public Record Office complex in the Four Courts during the Irish Civil War (1922-1923) resulted in the severe damage and destruction of records. Although not all records from the Chief Secretary's Office in Dublin Castle survive, especially from the period before 1836, sufficient material has survived to make the transportation records held in the National Archives a major source for Australians researching Irish convict ancestors. Penal transportation to Australia (and later to Bermuda or Gibraltar) covered the years 1791 until 1853 when the sentence of penal transportation was commuted to a prison sentence in Ireland. I would suggest a browse of the site here and a read of what they have to say would be of great benefit to you http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/ireland-australi a-transportation-records-1791-1853/748-2/ cheers cara -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of John O'Neil Sent: 03 February 2012 16:13 To: [email protected] Subject: [COTIPPERARY] shanahan Hello to all I was hoping that someone could tell me where i might find information on the Summer Assizes for Tipperary.I am looking for a Denis Shanahn trial date 19 July 1836.He was on trial for grievous assault he received a 7year sentence.Arrived in Australia in December 1836 on the ship Earl Grey.I was wondering if there were any newspaper reports at that time John Please remove extraneous text when replying: Please remember to "snip" short the message to which you are replying, and check the subject line. 3. Dear Janet,    To the list below please add Yahoo.  I have rec'd emails from sister-in-law, Slovak translator and now peteschm...all lead to a site advertising sexual enhancement products.  I DO NOT BELIEVE ANY OF THESE PEOPLE WERE THE ORIGINATORS OF SUCH MAIL.   Technology is wonderful but is a two way sword and we must all be vigilant.  Don't be afraid to contact the original party to let them know that their email password may have been stolen.  They won't be aware of it unless you do.                                                                                  Thanks Janet for all your hard work, your genological passion and your generous sharing of all things genological and historical.  Your nature is truly appreciated by us all!    Diane Perkins ________________________________ From: Janet Crawford <[email protected]> To: [email protected]; [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, January 31, 2012 1:41 PM Subject: [COTIPPERARY] Admin message AOL, Comcast & Hotmail account numbers were stolen along with their passwords almost a year ago. The hackers are just now getting around to using some of those accounts. However, ALL accounts were stolen and ALL passwords were stolen back then. 1. Re: [COTIPPERARY] research question
    2. This will be a case of piecing together information from various records to create an argument about who their parents were. I would encourage you to see if you can find their marriage in the parish records which might have the name of the townlands that the groom and bride were living in. Using that, I would go the Griffith Valuation records to see who by their surnames were living in the townlands on the assumption that their fathers would have been land occupiers at that time. (This is where you pray that you don't have a really common name in the area!) There's always a chance that the fathers were deceased by then but the mothers might even be considered the legal tenant. If you can't find the marriage record or if the townlands aren't listed on it, then look at the Griffiths Valuation for the townland where your 3rd great-grandparents were living when that first child was born. Again, see who else by the surname was living there. The valuation records are online at _www.AskaboutIreland.ie_ (http://www.AskaboutIreland.ie) Another piece of the puzzle is to consider the traditional naming pattern of the Irish. If it was followed, the first son was named after the paternal grandfather, the second son after the maternal grandfather. They would also use the same pattern for the daughters - first daughter after the paternal grandmother, the second after the maternal line. They didn't always use this but if there are several people with the same surname in the area, you can use it to narrow your attention to the most likely fathers. You can work backwards with the surname and look at the Tithe Applotment records from the 1820's and 1830's. Not every land occupier was subject to the tithe but most were so it's worth looking at. The tithe records for the civil parish of Kilsheelan have been transcribed at _http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/tipp/KilsheelanTithes.htm_ (http://www.connorsgenealogy.com/tipp/KilsheelanTithes.htm) . The key here is to know that the civil parish of Kilsheelan isn't necessarily identical to the Catholic parish of Kilsheelan - the religious parishes often included several civil parishes so you might have to check a different civil parish on the connorsgenealogy website. Again, the Griffiths Valuation site will supply you with the civil parish name for your townland. The 1821 census for the area was destroyed in the 1922 fire but someone had abstracted information for the civil parish of Kilsheenlan and their work survived. It's for selected surnames but yours might be there. The pages have been transcribed and put online at _http://www.igp-web.com/tipperary/census_1821.htm_ (http://www.igp-web.com/tipperary/census_1821.htm) You didn't mentioned if the family stayed in Ireland or emigrated. If they were listed in the Griffiths Primary Valuation, I would trace their land occupation through the updated valuation records to see who took over their land when they left or died. Often it was another member of the family. These "canceled land books" or "revision lists" have been microfilmed and are available from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. This may all be familiar territory for you or it may be as confusing as all get-out. It takes some patience but if you can create a picture of all the families by your surname in the area, you may be able to have a strong case for who your family was. If you have questions, let me know. Theresa Liewer Ankeny, Iowa In a message dated 2/1/2012 12:23:06 P.M.
