Andy, I was given some documentation with regards to Donoghue's from Glenflesk/Gortdromakierry, many settled in Worcester, MA. The 125 pages are a fantastic account of these families, one of these Donoghue's married a Fogarty. There is a mention of Denis Fogarty who married an Elizabeth Hurley in Aghadoe. Denis would have been born circa 1790. The descendant of Denis told the Donoghue interviewer that the Fogarty's were from Tipperary where they were cattle dealers and drovers, this is how they came to be in the Killarney area. The authors from what I gather have passed on. I will tell you all that facts of these 2 brothers from County Kerry have proved to be true. They went above and beyond speaking with old Kerry descendants and Worcester family as well. This work was years in the making, all done pre- internet days, they even traveled to Worcester for their research. However my connection to Tipperary, as far as I know, is my g-g-grandfather John Fogarty and possibly his wife Elizabeth Costello. John & Elizabeth's children were all born in Aghabeg, Co. Kerry and baptized in Lixnaw Parish. We can't find a marriage record for them in Kerry but that may be not available owing to dates. My understanding is the Fogartys originated in Tipperary. I only see about 6 or 8 Fogartys in your lists. Can you tell me from what area the Fogartys may have come? I know there is a Fogarty Castle location, now not owned by a Fogarty. Andy, The Fogarty's started in North Tipperary and that would be the area where they did and still do cluster. Since I am working on So. Tipp, there will be far fewer. Glenelg Township appears to have been a place where many Tipperary people immigrated, much like Troy in New York State. It would be interesting to get more information on the early residents there in Glenelg. I know I have a Quillinan who went there. Very interesting, Janet! However, when transcribing the tithes and I see items like (Wm) and (Oliver), I interpret it as their father. I maybe very wrong but they don't seem like nicknames to me. Father, mother and one daughter emigrated 1865. Another daughter and son (my gr grandfather) emigrated around the same time but I haven't found their passenger records. However, I do have my ggrandfather's citizenship papers dated 1868 saying he entered the country as a minor, under 18 yr. All I have on sister, Hanora, was a marriage in Troy NY 1866 to Thomas Maloney (another Tipperary name) and by 1870, he died and she remarried to a McGloughlan. I am looking for a Thomas and a John. My other names are Flanagan and Gilhouly, both from Tipperary RC Parish. Here here Janet I hope my Mealy tree is with yours too :) Warm wishes Kesa -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Janet Crawford Sent: Friday, 24 February 2012 10:40 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [COTIPPERARY] 1870/71 Census - Discussion I have spoken to the person who has given me this Census material. This, for Clanwilliam, is going to be a one-off special, rare gift from the genealogy gods as the rest of the census for Ireland was destroyed. What we have here was transcribed for some purpose into a book and kept with some very unrelated things. It is somehow being related to the Spring and Summer Assizes, so possibly used in connection with lawsuits on rates. Or something. So, nothing for any other barony or county unless something else like this shows up. God bless the "keepers" of the world. Now if my family tree from 900 AD to 1800 would only come out of someone's closet. Joanna, I am not all that sharp either, but some are noted as widow's, so maybe some of these are or maybe daughters inheriting when their father dies.
