Good afternoon all, I do not believe in postings regarding viruses because most people run crazy with them before they even check them out. Because of the volume of work I do on the Internet, I am subscribed to Norton & thier lists for updates. This just came to me. I thought you all might want to know because I am not the only one downloading and accepting files. Addie ========================== R U S H - K I L L E R V I R U S A L E R T! At 8:00 am on Saturday, April 1 (This is not an April Fool's joke!) the FBI announced it had discovered malicious code wiping out the data on hard drives and dialing 911. This is a vicious virus and needs to be stopped quickly. That can only be done through wide-scale individual action. Please forward this note to everyone who you know who might be affected. The FBI Advisory is posted at http://www.nipc.gov/nipc/advis00-038.htm The 911 virus is the first "Windows shares virus." Unlike recent viruses that propagate though eMail, the 911 virus silently jumps directly from machine to machine across the Internet by scanning for, and exploiting, open Windows shares. After successfully reproducing itself in other Internet-connected machines (to assure its continued survival) it uses the machine's modem to dial 911 and erases the local machine's hard drive. The virus is operational; victims are already reporting wiped-out hard drives. The virus was launched through AOL, AT&T, MCI, and NetZero in the Houston area. The investigation points to relatively limited distribution so far, but there are no walls in the Internet. ----------------- Action 1: Defense ----------------- Verify that your system and those of all your coworkers, friends, and associates are not vulnerable by verifying that file sharing is turned off. * On a Windows 95/98 system, system-wide file sharing is managed by selecting My Computer, Control Panel, Networks, and clicking on the File and Print Sharing button. For folder-by-folder controls, you can use Windows Explorer (Start, Programs, Windows Explorer) and highlight a primary folder such as My Documents and then right mouse click and select properties. There you will find a tab for sharing. * On a Windows NT, check Control Panel, Server, Shares. For an excellent way to instantly check system vulnerability, and for detailed assistance in managing Windows file sharing, see: Shields Up! A free service from Gibson Research (http://grc.com/) ------------------- Action 2: Forensics ------------------- If you find that you did have file sharing turned on, search your hard drive for hidden directories named "chode", "foreskin", or "dickhair" (we apologize for the indiscretion - but those are the real directory names). These are HIDDEN directories, so you must configure the Find command to show hidden directories. Under the Windows Explorer menu choose View/Options: "Show All Files". If you find those directories: remove them. And, if you find them, and want help from law enforcement, call the FBI National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) Watch Office at 202-323-3204/3205/3206. The FBI/NIPC has done an extraordinary job of getting data out early on this virus and deserves both kudos and cooperation. You can help the whole community by letting both the FBI and SANS (intrusion@sans.org) know if you've been hit, so we can monitor the spread of this virus. -------------- Moving Forward -------------- The virus detection companies received a copy of the code for the 911 Virus early this morning, so keep your virus signature files up-to-date. We'll post new information at www.sans.org as it becomes available. Legal Notices Privacy Policy BAT.Chode.Worm Detected as: BAT.Chode.Worm Aliases: Chode, Foreskin, BAT911 Infection Length: Multiple batch files Area of Infection: Shared drive Trigger Dates: 19th of the month Characteristics: Worm, Batch Description BAT.Chode.Worm is an internet-worm that uses BAT files. It searches through a range of IP addresses of known ISPs to find an accessible computer. If an accessible computer has its C drive shared, it will copy its files into the other computer. Technical Description BAT.Chode.Worm uses multiple BAT files and some system programs to spread itself through an internet connection. It searches through a range of IP addresses of known ISPs to find an accessible computer. If an accessible computer has a shared drive that is not password protected, the worm checks for the presence of the file C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM. If such file presents, it assumes the shared drive is the C drive of the other computer. It will then copy its files into the other computer's C:\PROGRA~1\CHODE directory. The main batch file assumes it is running from C:\PROGRA~1\CHODE directory. When launched, it searches for an accessible subnet on several ISPs: att.net (ATT Worldnet) bellsouth.net (BellSouth Net) level3.net (Level3 Net) aol.com (America Online) mindspring.com (Mindspring) earthlink.net (Earthlink) air.on.ca (Air.Internet in Canada) psi.net (PSInet) Once the worm finds an accessible subnet, it will search for an accessible shared drive. If there is no accessible shared drive in the subnet, it will repeat the subnet search above. Once the worm finds an accessible shared drive, it will do a quick test to see if the drive is the C drive. If it is the C drive, it will map the shared drive. After mapping the drive, it makes sure that it hasn't infected this mapped drive. While performing the check, it also searches and removes VBS.Network, a worm that uses VBS script. Then, it verifies the writability of the drive, and proceeds to copy its files to the other computer. While copying its files to the other computer, it adds the following: a call to a batch file that dials 911 using the computer modem into the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT. This modification is done one out of five times. ashield.pif into the Program-StartUp of the infected machine. This PIF file hides the worm when it is launched. netstat.pif into the Program-StartUp of the infected machine. This PIF file hides the netstat utility that it uses. winsock.vbs into the Program-StartUp of the infected machine. This VBS carries its payload. Log the infection in the file C:\PROGRAM FILES\chode\chode.txt of the source computer. The worm also uses a freeware utility to hide its activity. The freeware utility is a win32 program that the worm names ASHIELD.EXE. NAV will not detect this utility. Payload The WINSOCK.VBS is lauched when Windows starts on an infected computer. On the 19th of the month, this VBS script deletes files from the following directories: C:\windows C:\windows\system C:\windows\command C:\Then, it displays two message boxes: You Have Been Infected By Chode You may now turn this piece of shit off! Repair Notes Delete the C:\Program Files\Chode directory. PASSING AND SHARING THIS INFORMATION IF OK--- SAVE ! IF NOT OK---DELETE! glory bee ============================================================ "VISITING CEMETERIES," by Juliana Smith <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ============================================================ With spring nearly upon us, most of us are anxious to get out of the house and enjoy the sunshine. A visit to the cemetery is a good way to enjoy the great outdoors and to discover more about our families at the same time. WHAT YOU CAN FIND While some may see us hanging around cemeteries and think us a bit ghoulish, as family historians, we know that the records and headstone inscriptions found there can be incredibly rich sources of birth and death information. Cemeteries records may include sexton's records, church burial registers, cemetery deed and plot registers, burial permits, monument (gravestone) inscriptions, and more, depending on the place and time. Indexes can be a great starting point and helpful in pinning down what cemetery an ancestor is buried in and some have been indexed by genealogical and other historical agencies. Unfortunately, however, most cemeteries are not indexed and it will be necessary to write or visit the cemetery to obtain information. A great advantage of visiting a cemetery is that you will know exactly who is buried in the plot with the ancestor, and in adjacent plots, where you may find other family members. You may find your relative buried with his or her in-laws, cousins, or the married names of siblings. Information on tombstones could include, maiden names, birth and death dates, relationships, town of origin, military service, and possibly religious affiliation. All of this can lead to other record sources that can further your search. Some ethnic groups even have photographs embedded in the tombstones. It is not uncommon to find siblings that died in infancy or at a very young age buried in these plots. These siblings may have previously been unknown to you and their death records may also provide valuable information such as parents' names, towns of origin, etc. Symbols engraved on the headstone can also provide valuable clues. For more on this, see George G. Morgan's "Along Those Lines . . ." column of 23 July 1999 on "Cemetery Iconography" at: http://www.ancestry.com/columns/george/07-23-99.htm You may also find that the grave has been maintained or is freshly decorated with flowers, possibly by another unknown or long-lost family member. If this is the case you may want to check with the cemetery office or with a caretaker to see if this visitor is known to them. Or you could leave a note in a plastic casing (to preserve it from the elements) so that other family members who visit the grave can contact you. (You will want to be careful about how much information you leave though, as you don't have any way of knowing who will run across your note.) LOCATING CEMETERIES There are various ways to locate a place of burial for an ancestor. Death certificates will frequently contain this information, as will obituaries. Mass cards or prayer cards handed down or kept in family scrapbooks can also provide this information. Also many local societies have compiled cemetery indexes and others may have been put up on the Internet. Interment.net (http://www.interment.net/) is a good place to start looking for online cemetery records. You can also do a search, using your favorite search engine, for [the city, town, or county of interest] and "cemetery." Another useful online tool for locating cemeteries is the U.S. Geological Survey's Geographic Name Information Server (GNIS) at: http://mapping.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html Just enter location information in the appropriate field(s) and choose 'cemetery' under 'Feature Type' and you will get a list of cemeteries in the area. By clicking on the cemetery of interest, you can also see a page that allows you to create a map of the area. If you know the religious affiliation, you might try to visit local Web sites for churches in the area. The Archdiocese of Chicago has a website just for the Catholic Cemeteries in the area at: http://www.cathcemchgo.org/home.htm Other directories online, include: Cemetery Junction http://www.daddezio.com/cemetery/junction/ Find a Grave http://www.findagrave.com/index.html List of State Veterans Cemeteries http://www.cem.va.gov/lsvc.htm Death http://www.totentanz.de/index.htm When trying to determine which cemetery in an area a family member is buried in, you might want to do a little research into the methods of transportation that were available in the area at the time. A walk-in cemetery will typically be within a couple of miles or so of the home of the deceased. Often railroads or streetcars also made stops at cemeteries, so by locating the residence of the deceased and plotting local cemeteries on a map, taking into account religious affiliations if known, you may be able to make an educated guess as to the burial location. Books like "Graveyard Shift: A Family Historian's Guide to New York City Cemeteries," by Carolyn Inskeep (http://shop.myfamily.com/ancestrycatalog/product.asp?pf%5Fid=1126146&dept%5Fid=10103002) are also invaluable in tracing the history of cemeteries, and in tracking old cemeteries whose burials may have been relocated. VISITING CEMETERIES When you visit the cemetery you will want to check with the office to see what records are available. The offices will typically contain indexes to burials and possibly maps to help locate graves. Burial records, sexton's records, cemetery deeds, plat records, burial permit records, grave opening orders, and transit records may also be held in the offices and can provide valuable information. For more on burial and transit records, see George Morgan's article of 19 November 1999 "Using Burial Permits as Resources" at: http://www.ancestry.com/dailynews/11_19_99.htm#4 One word of warning--don't leave a purse or other valuables in your car when you visit cemeteries. Several local news programs here in the Chicago area issued warnings in the past weeks about thieves who were preying on visitors to cemeteries and robbing their cars while they visited graves. TAKING CARE WITH HEADSTONES If you are planning on visiting cemeteries remember to treat the headstones and markers with care. Many of these grave markers are very fragile, and even the pressure used to take a tombstone rubbing could cause damage to some stones. Do not apply shaving cream or other chemicals to the stones, as this can also cause damage. By using a mirror held at an angle or by photographing the stone at different angles, (or at different times of the day), it is often possible to make out those worn down inscriptions. I have also heard that a black light shone directly on the stone will help too. More information about tombstone care and preventing damage is available from: The Association for Gravestone Studies, 278 Main Street, Suite 207, Greenfield, Massachusetts 01301, Tel: 413-772-0836, E-mail: ags@javanet.com, http://www.berkshire.net/ags/. Most of the individual links are for more general information, some are more specific...but even if you have already been to some of these sites, my advice is to: 1. Check back occasionally because interest is growing in this area, so additions are always being made! 2. Surf to any link that looks halfway promising...some will be better than the title sounds, some will be not so good as the title sounds...! It is kind of like books --you can't judge them by their cover! 3. The surfing around process takes a lot of time, and sometimes I get "lost", so if you see something good, either bookmark or keep a log of sites to return to later or you may never find it again! A few good places to start: 1. Of course, Luis del Pino's site "Genealogía Española" at http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Senate/4593/geneal.html 2.Hispanic Family History Research -- they have a long list of "Websites Genealogical Interest in Latin America and Southern Europe". The first URL is their welcome page and the second should take you directly to the links page... For myself I printed this list of links out to easily refer back to. http://www.hfhr.com/hispanic.htm http://www.hfhr.com/websites.html 3. Spain GenWeb -- from here you can go to Andalucia or whatever region you are interested in...unfortunately not all the provinces have been adopted yet...keep trying! http://rootsweb.com/~espwgw/index.htm http://members.aol.com/balboanet/spain/index.html 4. Rootsweb's lesson on Hispanic research: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/lesson22.htm 5. Here is a good new site for Andalucian research and general knowledge... http://www.andalucia.cc/habis/english.htm Grab a good Spanish - English dictionary and get surfing...hope you find something good. More websites to come...these should keep you busy for a little while!!! Un Saludo, Missy Burke Lake Jackson, Tx.
