Good evening, I have an announcement to make. I have just unsubbed one individual because of the signature line being used. I do not make this a practice and want everyone to know that this list is for genealogy, history and family connections to and from San Juan County Colorado. a. This is not a list for advertising legal issues and stating that this address is for anything else but genealogy / research for, about and in San Juan County. THIS IS a list for us to have fun while trying to locate our families history and making those lost connections in San Juan County. I do not want to make it a practice of policing the lists. But I will if I feel it necessary to do so. The list owner, Addie

>From another list! Outstanding Tip! Moira Neville writes: Recently my apartment building burned, and I lost virtually everything. Here are a few brief tips that I should have followed. - First, find someone who can make copies, or even a video record of all your family pictures. (My cousin, the graphic artist, volunteered to do this ages ago, but I was waiting to send him everything. Ouch!) I had five generations of my mothers family. They may be in the basement and if we can find them before they get fungus on them we might save them. - Second tip. All is not lost until it is lost. A friend of mine is checking on what chemicals to use to restore the wet photos when and if we find them. He is using the Net to get the info. He is a photographer and he says that they can be saved by a chemical bath providing no fungus has gotten to them. - Never assume that you have enough copies and if you do not have them, make duplicates and pass them around. I had eight copies of my mothers wedding picture that included rare pictures of other relatives. I was trying to give them to one of my aunts descendants and I had given one away, but did not trust this kid to send them around when I discovered he was not on good terms with his mother. Thankfully, one of my grandmother pictures--I believe her high school graduation picture from ca. 1898--was found in a pile of charred remains. The enamel picture frame, tucked into a box with some stuff too tight to burn, protected it from all damage. My cousin has a copy of my grandmother's college graduation picture and I can get a new picture from her. - If you do not back up your computer, then do so from now on. But remember that your backup should not be kept near the computer, and ideally, not in the same building. (In case of fire, records can be retrieved only if the backup is somewhere safe.) If you cannot store your back up, and family archives offsite, then get a fire-proof safe or two, if necessary, to hold them in. If you are storing these things in the basement use plastic bins that can keep out water until you can get to them. Most of the damage done to my stuff in the cellar was due to water damage. If the first smaller accidental fire had been all there was, such containers would also have saved much from smoke damage. Unfortunately an arsonist finished the job. - And, of course, always try to work together and share all information. Make copies whenever possible and send to someone else in the family who shares your interest. Even e-mails of new finds to a relative can be used to piece back your materials. - Some more tips, although they are not genealogical. Make sure that your smoke detectors are working, and that you have fire extinguishers handy. One of them could have prevented the first fire, which we believe inspired the second. If you have one, make sure that it works and is current. They need to be replaced periodically. It may seem silly to keep buying one every few years, but it is well worth it. Moira Neville Massachusetts To add to this, I make several back up copies of all photos and save the back ups in several locations. In adition to this, I also distribute e-mail copies to relatives. Another tip is; To those who have a CD-writer, copy those photos to a cd-writer! Cd's supposedly last over 30 years.. In scanning the photos, in "options" make your size changes, and in the best copy BETWEEN initial (first) scan and final scan! To do this may prevent your photos from looking ''dirtied" (dithering) or resembling a paint by number photo etc. Glory Bee

>From another list.. I believe these were the questions some one was asking.. I "paraphrased" the questions previously asked, I believe that the questions below are what the list member wanted to know.. The response by another list member "Kay in CA " was excellent! I am passing it along as we have all felt this............. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz How does one obtain information? All I ever get is: go to this web site.. or The web site you have accessed requires a membership of $$$ cost, this data base is limited unless you join. Are there websites where by one can obtain information for free? Is it posssible to have some one research information for you? Are there costs involved with this?. RESPONSE.......... Lists such as this are not likely to help you connect with others researching the same names/areas you are unless they happen to be surname lists. For instance, I am on the (surname) list at Rootsweb since that is a name I am researching. You might check to see if there are lists for (name) (Insert the surname or surnames of those whom you are researching.). . Lists such as this are more for general questions you might have about genealogy. For instance, you might tell the list you have searched for information in certain places and don't know where to look next. List members could then give you ideas on the next step in your research. Often they will direct you to a website that they believe has information that will be helpful to you. Most of the time they will be directing you to websites with free access, but sometimes they will indicate that the information can be obtained from a place where you have to pay for access, such as Ancestry.com or the Family Tree Maker site. You would of course want to try the free sites first before spending money on the others. Sometimes the answer to your question, as far as anyone knows, will be "it doesn't exist on the Internet". It may exist in print form in some library, but usually on these lists people are looking for Internet sources. However, if someone knows it DOES exist in print somewhere and they know where, they will likely tell you that. If you find a list for the ("surname name placed here") surname and join them, then you would want to submit a specific request. An example might be: "I am searching for information on Mary surname who married Tom (surname)in 1742 in Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. I know they had 4 children: Tom, Joseph, Susan and William. I have been unable to find out who Mary's parents are or where she was born. If anyone has information on this family, please contact me." Names, dates and places are important to help the others on the list identify if the person you are looking for is in their files. If you just ask for "information on Mary (surname)" without anything else, they won't be able to tell if they can help you. Hope this helps answer your questions. glory bee XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX-- Grand parents Raising Grandchildren Support Group 1st Wednesday of month---7:00 P.M. sending again! last sent 6-10-99 from another list--as I recall! Happy documenting :-) glory bee zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ============================================================ EVIDENCE FOR PROOF Evidence is the means of proving or disproving a fact. There are five types of evidence: 1. PRIMARY: Primary evidence is that from a record when the record itself is the cause or result of the action or fact to be proved. Examples are: Vital records, Wills, Church Records, Tombstones etc., This is the best evidence. 2. COLLATERAL: Collateral evidence is when it is collateral to the purpose of the records but never the less an integral part of the record: Example: If a man speaks of his daughter by her married name, it signifies a marriage when no marriage record can be found. 3. SECONDARY: Evidence consists of statements made by persons of facts they know of their own knowledge: Examples: Oaths, Old Letters, Depositions. 4. CIRCUMSTANTIAL: If two or more facts are so related, that if one which can be proved by a higher type of evidence is true. When the other is necessarily, true. Example: Record shows a daughter of a man and later he marries someone, it shows he was married before and had at least one daughter. 5. REPORTED: Rumor, Hearsay, County Histories, and Many Biographies. These are the least trustworthy but good for clues. SOURCES OF GENEALOGICAL MATERIALS 1. PRIVATE: Family Bibles, Ledgers, Diaries, Photograph Albums, Samplers, Old Silver, Fly Leaves of old Books, Old Letters, Old Wills, Diplomas, Citations, Discharge Papers, School Records, Insurance Claims, Baby Books, Grandmother Bracelets, Etc. 2. PUBLIC: Census, Pension, Military, Land Tax, Deeds, Laws, Church Records, Court, Probate, Vital Records, Mortality, Immigration, Naturalization, Obituary Notices, Cemetery Records and Tombstones, Register of Voters, Maps, and Plat Books. sharing from another list.. info of interest! glory bee Hello Raclare, You are correct in saying that certain names were "fashionable" in certain localities, in certain families, and tend to follow certain patterns, I would assume. So far, I have found several of these patterns in my ancestral records, such as giving boys "José" as a first name, but using a second or third name as the "name in use," as it can be seen in marriage records (where the name "José" often does not appear). Second, giving the first name María to girls, which often also tended to disappear by the time the particular person married. Third, giving the child the saint name of the birthdate as another one of the names. Although I agree that this does not always happen, in the case of my ancestors, it often did, such as my dad being given the middle name "Lucio" after "Santa Lucía" because he was born on Dec. 13 (1922). Another note, is that I remember looking at religious calendars as a child (I grew up in Mexico) and noticing that almost every day had not one, but two or three saints, which means that the parents had a choice of several saints to name the child after. Fourth, many children were given the names of other relatives (aunts, uncles, grandparents), which I am sure is common in every culture at almost any point in time, which translates into certain towns having certain predominant names and an almost total absence of others. Fifth, many children were given the same name as that of a deceased older brother or sister, especially when the older sibling died at a young age. So that in some cases, several christening records from the same nuclear family have the same names given to children born at different times. I am sure there are many more patterns but it is important to be aware of them as it makes searches easier. Most important, I believe, is to look for an indivual under any one of their names and not just the first. Last names are another subject, but I have found chirstening records listing the mother´s second (or maternal) surname as the child´s second surname. Confusing, huh? Thanks a lot for making a point of the fact that the saint´s name was not always given to the child, and we should definitely not assume that this is the case, although in some cases it is. Patricia Pulles "Agnes R. Kanal" wrote: While tradition may favor giving a child the name of the saint on whose day he/she is born, I find something rather different in the New Spain/Mexico archives I work with. Names seem to have more to do with the locality, or some criterion I do not understand, than with the day of birth. Certain names were very popular in a certain period and region. In one set of records I find the name Maria del Carmen del Refugio given over and over again. Every girl in the area must have been Maria del Carmen, including one of my tias abuelas. The name Raphael bursts into popularity somewhere along the line, having been almost non-existent in earlier records. Maria Ignacias abound. These cannot be explained by saints' day naming. Does anyone have an idea of what can make a name so very popular at a given time? I have looked some of these names up in the Book of the Saints that I got at the Franciscan center here in D.C., but I don't find any answer in them. QUICK TIP <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> ============================================================ Although I was excited to receive copies of my ancestors' newspaper obituaries, I kept running into a small obstacle: I was given the newspaper date (the date the obituary was printed), but not the actual date of death. The text would read: "Sylvia Walker died Saturday afternoon at her home," or "Mrs. Bettie Warfield, age 49, died of heart failure early Tuesday morning." Since I didn't know the day of the week the newspaper printed the obituary, I was unable to extract an exact date of death; consequently, I was unable to request a copy of the certified death certificate from the Office of Vital Statistics (which could lead to further ancestral info, such as parents' names). Then I discovered a 10,000-year calendar on the Internet. I plug in the newspaper date--say, 4/14/1913, a calendar is generated on-screen, and then I can see what Tuesday date preceded the newspaper date--the actual date of death I needed! I'm sure there are other such online calendars, but this one works just great for me: http://www.calendarhome.com/tyc/ Valerie Jordan-Jones -- Grand parents Raising Grandchildren Support Group 1st Wednesday of month---7:00 P.M. Good afternoon all, I do not believe in postings regarding viruses because most people run crazy with them before they even check them out. Because of the volume of work I do on the Internet, I am subscribed to Norton & thier lists for updates. This just came to me. I thought you all might want to know because I am not the only one downloading and accepting files. Addie ========================== R U S H - K I L L E R V I R U S A L E R T! At 8:00 am on Saturday, April 1 (This is not an April Fool's joke!) the FBI announced it had discovered malicious code wiping out the data on hard drives and dialing 911. This is a vicious virus and needs to be stopped quickly. That can only be done through wide-scale individual action. Please forward this note to everyone who you know who might be affected. The FBI Advisory is posted at http://www.nipc.gov/nipc/advis00-038.htm The 911 virus is the first "Windows shares virus." Unlike recent viruses that propagate though eMail, the 911 virus silently jumps directly from machine to machine across the Internet by scanning for, and exploiting, open Windows shares. After successfully reproducing itself in other Internet-connected machines (to assure its continued survival) it uses the machine's modem to dial 911 and erases the local machine's hard drive. The virus is operational; victims are already reporting wiped-out hard drives. The virus was launched through AOL, AT&T, MCI, and NetZero in the Houston area. The investigation points to relatively limited distribution so far, but there are no walls in the Internet. ----------------- Action 1: Defense ----------------- Verify that your system and those of all your coworkers, friends, and associates are not vulnerable by verifying that file sharing is turned off. * On a Windows 95/98 system, system-wide file sharing is managed by selecting My Computer, Control Panel, Networks, and clicking on the File and Print Sharing button. For folder-by-folder controls, you can use Windows Explorer (Start, Programs, Windows Explorer) and highlight a primary folder such as My Documents and then right mouse click and select properties. There you will find a tab for sharing. * On a Windows NT, check Control Panel, Server, Shares. For an excellent way to instantly check system vulnerability, and for detailed assistance in managing Windows file sharing, see: Shields Up! A free service from Gibson Research (http://grc.com/) ------------------- Action 2: Forensics ------------------- If you find that you did have file sharing turned on, search your hard drive for hidden directories named "chode", "foreskin", or "dickhair" (we apologize for the indiscretion - but those are the real directory names). These are HIDDEN directories, so you must configure the Find command to show hidden directories. Under the Windows Explorer menu choose View/Options: "Show All Files". If you find those directories: remove them. And, if you find them, and want help from law enforcement, call the FBI National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC) Watch Office at 202-323-3204/3205/3206. The FBI/NIPC has done an extraordinary job of getting data out early on this virus and deserves both kudos and cooperation. You can help the whole community by letting both the FBI and SANS (intrusion@sans.org) know if you've been hit, so we can monitor the spread of this virus. -------------- Moving Forward -------------- The virus detection companies received a copy of the code for the 911 Virus early this morning, so keep your virus signature files up-to-date. We'll post new information at www.sans.org as it becomes available. Legal Notices Privacy Policy BAT.Chode.Worm Detected as: BAT.Chode.Worm Aliases: Chode, Foreskin, BAT911 Infection Length: Multiple batch files Area of Infection: Shared drive Trigger Dates: 19th of the month Characteristics: Worm, Batch Description BAT.Chode.Worm is an internet-worm that uses BAT files. It searches through a range of IP addresses of known ISPs to find an accessible computer. If an accessible computer has its C drive shared, it will copy its files into the other computer. Technical Description BAT.Chode.Worm uses multiple BAT files and some system programs to spread itself through an internet connection. It searches through a range of IP addresses of known ISPs to find an accessible computer. If an accessible computer has a shared drive that is not password protected, the worm checks for the presence of the file C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM. If such file presents, it assumes the shared drive is the C drive of the other computer. It will then copy its files into the other computer's C:\PROGRA~1\CHODE directory. The main batch file assumes it is running from C:\PROGRA~1\CHODE directory. When launched, it searches for an accessible subnet on several ISPs: att.net (ATT Worldnet) bellsouth.net (BellSouth Net) level3.net (Level3 Net) aol.com (America Online) mindspring.com (Mindspring) earthlink.net (Earthlink) air.on.ca (Air.Internet in Canada) psi.net (PSInet) Once the worm finds an accessible subnet, it will search for an accessible shared drive. If there is no accessible shared drive in the subnet, it will repeat the subnet search above. Once the worm finds an accessible shared drive, it will do a quick test to see if the drive is the C drive. If it is the C drive, it will map the shared drive. After mapping the drive, it makes sure that it hasn't infected this mapped drive. While performing the check, it also searches and removes VBS.Network, a worm that uses VBS script. Then, it verifies the writability of the drive, and proceeds to copy its files to the other computer. While copying its files to the other computer, it adds the following: a call to a batch file that dials 911 using the computer modem into the C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT. This modification is done one out of five times. ashield.pif into the Program-StartUp of the infected machine. This PIF file hides the worm when it is launched. netstat.pif into the Program-StartUp of the infected machine. This PIF file hides the netstat utility that it uses. winsock.vbs into the Program-StartUp of the infected machine. This VBS carries its payload. Log the infection in the file C:\PROGRAM FILES\chode\chode.txt of the source computer. The worm also uses a freeware utility to hide its activity. The freeware utility is a win32 program that the worm names ASHIELD.EXE. NAV will not detect this utility. Payload The WINSOCK.VBS is lauched when Windows starts on an infected computer. On the 19th of the month, this VBS script deletes files from the following directories: C:\windows C:\windows\system C:\windows\command C:\Then, it displays two message boxes: You Have Been Infected By Chode You may now turn this piece of shit off! Repair Notes Delete the C:\Program Files\Chode directory.
